Report: Chris Watts' mother will tell court he was capable of killing wife :: WRAL.com
Before Christopher Watts is sentenced Monday to spend the rest of his life in prison for the deaths of his wife, Shanann, and two young daughters, the court will hear from his mother.

Denver's 9 News reported on Saturday that Chris Watts' mother and her husband will be allowed to make a statement at his sentencing hearing. Watts mother has previously said she didn't think Chris killed his daughters, but she knew he was guilty of killing his wife.

The plea agreement calls for a minimum of three consecutive life terms without parole plus an additional 16 to 48 years.

"He deserves a life sentence for each and every act," Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke said.

Shanann Watts' family members "were very strongly in favor of a resolution in this case short of the death penalty," Rourke said. He recalled her mother, Sandra Rzucek, saying Christopher Watts "made the choice" to take the lives of his family members.

Watts family murders: Chris Watts scheduled to be sentenced Monday
The sentencing hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Monday. Denver7 will stream the full hearing live on TheDenverChannel.com, on Facebook, Twitter and on TV streaming devices.

19th Judicial District Attorney Michael Rourke could also speak following the hearing and it’s possible that the autopsy reports for Shanann, Bella and Celeste could be released in the hours or days that follow.

On Thursday, a judge granted Watts’ parents or a designee the right to speak at the hearing. Chris Watts' father is expected to be in court for sentencing Monday.

Shanann’s parents could also deliver victim impact statements in which they could ask the judge for a more-lenient or stronger sentence for Watts.

Aurora theater victim’s father: Christopher Watts’ sentencing not necessarily closure for victims’ family
There are few people who personally know the pain of losing a loved one in such a sudden and sinister manner, but Tom Sullivan is one of them. His son, Alex, was shot and killed in the Aurora theater shooting about six years ago.

“It's a lifelong emotional roller-coaster of trying to mend a broken heart and trying to find some way to fill the soul that is leaking out of you every day,” Sullivan told FOX31.

Sullivan is talking about this now because another family, Shanann Watts’, is fraught with that familiar heartbreak.

His criminal case is quickly closing, but for Shanann Watts’ family, that doesn’t necessarily mean closure.

Chris Watts set to be sentenced to life in prison for murder of wife, daughters
There is no question about what is going to happen to Chris Watts on Monday.

Weld County District Judge Marcelo Kopcow is going to sentence him to a minimum of three consecutive life terms with no chance of parole for the murders of his pregnant wife and the couple’s young daughters.

Kopcow will have the discretion to tack more years onto that sentence for some of his other crimes – he pleaded guilty to nine separate felonies – but none of it will alter this reality: Watts, 33, will die in prison.

But it’s expected to be a day fraught with tension – the sentencing hearing will provide Shanann Watts’ parents and brother the chance to confront him directly.

And it’s also expected that a number of lingering questions will be answered. Questions such as the suspected motive. The cause of death for the three victims. And the reasons investigators concluded Chris Watts was lying when he initially told them his family was home safe when he left for work the morning of Aug. 13 and didn’t know what had happened to them.

Cindy Watts has suggested that he should withdraw his guilty plea -- something that could be done if there is a "fair and just" reason to do so. But barring that surprise, he will walk out of court for the last time Monday, headed to the Colorado Department of Corrections and a life sentence.

Chris Watts to be sentenced in killing of two daughters and pregnant wife - CNN
A Colorado man who pleaded for his family's return before being charged with killing his daughters and pregnant wife will not face the death penalty. He could, however, spend the rest of his life behind bars after he is sentenced Monday.

His sentencing comes days after a woman he had been dating told The Denver Post that he lied to her about being near the end of divorce proceedings. She cooperated with police before his arrest, she told the newspaper.

In exchange for Watts' pleas, he will not face the death penalty, Rourke said. Shanann Watts' family was OK with taking the option off the table, he said.
The plea deal asks the judge to make the first-degree murder sentences consecutive, Rourke said, so they would stretch one after the other.

Behind the Scenes of Family Murderer Chris Watts' Surprising Plea: 'He Made the Right Choice'
When Chris Watts first appeared on TV, standing outside his suburban Colorado home on Aug. 14, talking to a local news reporter, the only strange thing about him seemed to be the story he was telling.

He was unnaturally calm, even awkward — as though he had never expected to find himself in this position, talking about his family on the news, or like he had something to hide.

And then, on Nov. 6, a sudden reversal that had secretly been weeks in the making: In a deal with prosecutors, Chris pleaded guilty to everything, avoiding the death penalty but acknowledging reluctantly that he would spend the rest of his life in prison when he was sentenced on Monday.

Shan’ann’s parents and brother huddled together in court, crying as Chris admitted guilt. Stoic himself, Chris fell apart afterward, the source close to him tells PEOPLE: “He lost everything, and he knows it.”

With his plea, a case that could have carried on without answers for years is all but resolved. Prosecutors have said several key questions will be answered once Chris is sentenced, including his motive and how his family was killed.

The source close to him says Chris had to be persuaded to plead but realized he had no other option, given the damning evidence against him. Even so, the decision was his alone.

Sentencing set for man after guilty plea in family killings
Watts will have an opportunity to make a statement during the hearing Monday in Weld County, but it’s not clear if he will speak. Watts is represented by the Office of the Colorado State Public Defender, which does not comment on pending cases.

Prosecutors have said Shanann Watts’ family members may decide to speak during the sentencing hearing.

Judge Marcelo Kopcow also ruled Thursday that Christopher Watts’ parents are considered victims of the crime because they are the girls’ grandparents. Victims are allowed to give a statement or provide written comments during sentencing hearings in Colorado.
