IMHO I'm so sick of seeing these repeat offenders free to continue creating victims. When is enough going to be enough? It' why we're seeing such a spike in gun crime in Chicago. They tried raising the bonds but then reduced the jail time so it just spiked the murder numbers. Cook County courts raise bonds for gun crimes — but suspects getting out faster

•Horton then reported her missing on June 24
•He told LE he last saw AG at their home on June 22

LE says Horton has since denied that he was at the gathering (small party) June 22 and said he last saw Griffin walking away from the trailer park community where they lived in a camper on June 22.

Police later found traces of blood in the basement, main level and upstairs portions of the house where the gathering occurred.

“The blood is still being tested,” says Case. “But based on witness statements, we are beyond confident it is her."

Case says Horton is seen on surveillance buying a shovel from Mix Hardware in Battle Creek on the afternoon of June 23.

“He then lawyered up and we haven’t talked to him since,” says Case.
Horton’s attorney entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf at his arraignment.

Police have also arrested 27-year-old Julice Haggerty in connection with the case.

Some members of the Michigan Independent Search and Rescue began searching the rural and wooded areas of Battle Creek for Griffin’s remains.

Police in Battle Creek are continuing their search for the body of 27-year-old Amber Griffin.

Police are asking for help from the public in locating her body.

At the couple's home at Creek Valley Mobile Home Park in Bedford Township, Detective Sgt. Joel Case said detectives found blood and other evidence suggesting Griffin was beaten at a house on Oneita Street.


Case told WWMT on Tuesday that the search has been extensive, but more help from the public is needed. Specifically, he said police are looking for clues such as regular hangout spots or anywhere they may have hid the body.

The case has been further hindered by several detectives working the case testing positive for COVID-19, only one of which has returned to work at this time.

Detectives have been focused on finding people with information on where Griffin's body is located.

In the last month, almost all of the resources available to the detectives at the Battle Creek Police Department have been poured into Griffin's case, according to Battle Creek Police Detective Sgt. Joel Case.

Still, she remains missing, there's still a lot of area to search, and COVID-19 has cut the number of detectives working in half.

Case said it is not often Battle Creek police have a suspect in custody before a recovered body. In Griffin's case, the department is working in reverse, Case said, putting hundreds of hours into tracking leads, and searching areas based on those leads.

Case said police need others with information to come forward.

Police in Michigan are desperately searching for the body of a young mother who disappeared in late June and is presumed dead.

Two people have been charged in 27-year-old Amber Griffin's disappearance and apparent death, including her boyfriend, 25-year-old Derek Horton.

Griffin was reported missing in Battle Creek on June 24 by her mother and Horton, who told police that he last saw his girlfriend at around midnight on June 23 at the couple's Bedford Township trailer home.

But as the investigation unfolded, police discovered multiple inconsistencies in Horton's version of events.


Sgt. Joel Case, with the Battle Creek Police Department, told MLive.com that multiple witnesses reported seeing Griffin and Horton together at around 2am on June 23.

At about that time, police received a 911 call from Griffin's phone, on which emergency dispatchers could hear a violent struggle between a woman, whose voice they identified as belonging to Griffin, and a man.

Investigators later obtained surveillance video from a nearby hardware store, which allegedly showed Horton and his suspected accomplice, Julice Haggerty, buying a shovel.

It has been reported by WKZO that Horton and Haggerty also purchased cleaning supplies and new clothes that day, but police have yet to confirm that.
