Search for missing Portage woman now a homicide investigation

[...]
The search for a missing Portage woman is now a homicide investigation. Heather Kelley, 35, of Portage was last seen after 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, in the Comstock Township area. The search is now a homicide investigation, Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller III said during a news conference Wednesday, Feb. 8. Kelley’s body has not been found, Fuller said. Helicopters and teams have been used for the search in a lot of different places.

[...]
Kelley’s car was found Dec. 11, on East Michigan Avenue at Sprinkle Road. The vehicle had been set on fire and there was evidence of blood inside, Fuller said. Kelley’s clothing was found nearby, and police are DNA testing evidence.
[...]

[...]
Police have a person of interest, and he is in custody for other crimes, Fuller said. Kelley and the man were acquaintances of some sort, he said. Investigators are using technology to track that person’s movements before and after her disappearance. Fuller declined to say if the person of interest has been convicted of other crimes. A second person may have helped with the burning of the vehicle and destroying evidence, Fuller said. Police know who that person is but the person is not in custody, Fuller said.

It must have been torturous for her family not being able to reveal this info for the nearly month and a half that little was released. The only comfort is that there's a POI in custody.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Court documents lay out the why detectives believe a Portage mother of eight was the victim of a homicide and evidence that her boyfriend was involved.

Heather Kelley, 35, has been missing since Dec. 10. The next day, court records show, her cousin found her burning car on E. Michigan Avenue near N. Sprinkle Road. The cousin said a red pickup truck was parked nearby. Within minutes, she heard it speed away, tires squealing.

After firefighters doused the flames, the car was found to have a “large amount” of blood inside, as well as long human hair, the court records show. <modsnip: 10% copyright rule>

Silent Observer is offering a reward of up to $5,000 in the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at 269.383.8748 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.

She fought back with everything she had.

Awful, awful, awful.

No doubt, she just wanted to go home.

So much violence against women, over and over and over.

Heartbroken for her children and family.

Completely agree. A tragedy for Heather and her family that she became involved with this man with 'a long criminal history'.

The boyfriend, who was identified as a person of interest in the disappearance of missing Kalamazoo County woman Heather Kelley, left his probation home without permission the day after Kelley went missing, according to court documents.

The suspect, who has not been charged in Kelley's case and therefore will not be named, was part of the Kalamazoo Probation Enhancement Program, or KPEP, after being released from federal prison in July 2022, documents read.

He was working as a busboy at the Park Club on Dec. 10, the day Kelley was last heard from, according to movement tracked by his GPS tether. The tether went dead around 9:30 p.m. that night.

Person of interest in Heather Kelley case is her boyfriend, family says

[...]
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The person of interest in relation to a Portage mother's disappearance is the woman's on-and-off boyfriend, her family confirmed Thursday.

The boyfriend had just gotten out of federal prison in summer 2022, according to Heather Kelley's family. The individual is in custody on an unrelated charge, police said.

The 35-year-old mother of eight was last seen alive pumping gas in Comstock on Dec. 10, 2022, nearly two months ago.

Boyfriend’s tether off for hours when mom of 8 vanished

[...]
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — If detectives in Kalamazoo County are building a case against Heather Kelley’s boyfriend in her homicide, they may need to act quickly. Federal court records show Kelley’s 37-year-old boyfriend, identified in search warrants connected to her disappearance, is being held at the Newaygo County Jail on a federal hold. He is set to be released on April 26.
[...]

[...]
Court documents show her boyfriend was on federal parole, wearing a tether and had been finishing up a federal sentence at the KPEP halfway house, 537 Chicago Ave. in Kalamazoo Township, for a 2010 cocaine conspiracy that included a murder-for-hire plot.

The halfway house is two miles from where Kelley’s cousin on Dec. 11 discovered the car, which had just been set on fire. She told police a red pickup truck sped away moments after she got there. The car had blood and human hair in it. DNA tests showed the blood was Kelley’s.

Records also show a Kalamazoo County deputy had spotted the car in the same spot 16 hours earlier, before Kelley was reported missing and before the car was set on fire. He left it there and tagged it as abandoned, records show.

The Grand Rapids station reported that authorities arrested Kelley’s boyfriend on Dec. 14 and is on a federal hold until April 26. The boyfriend was taken to Newaygo County Jail. WOOD wrote that the boyfriend asked for an early release, claiming he went AWOL because Kelley’s relatives threatened to kill him.
