Donald Dawkins, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, said authorities still don’t know what the device was — or whether it was inside the vehicle or attached to it — when it exploded.

"For the person who did it, it went off when they wanted — unfortunately for everyone else," Mr. Dawkins told The Blade.

He said investigators were working to put it back together from the many pieces that were collected from the scene.

Federal agents converged Wednesday afternoon at the Sylvania law firm of Erik Chappell, who along with his two sons was injured when a powerful bomb went off in their car, triggering an explosion on a Michigan street.

The agents spent several hours during the afternoon at the Main Street offices of the Lyden, Liebenthal & Chappell LTD law firm.

Here's an article from msnbc....

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44607642/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/

"In a 911 call to Monroe County Central Dispatch, Erik Chappell describes his own and his boys' injuries and pleads for a quick response."

"OK, we've got a bad accident. My car blew up with two kids," according to a recording of the call obtained by The Blade newspaper in Toledo, Ohio, and posted on its website. "You've been called on it already, OK, but I'm telling you what's going on with the boys. ... They are bleeding. I need someone here now."

(Thanks Nurse for keeping this thread updated. What a horrific story!)

hmmmmm.....am I the only one feeling a possible Diane Downs vibe from this?

Praying for the full recovery for all, but concerned about how this will psychologically affect those boys. Totally random violence out of nowhere - the kind of stuff that scars the psyche. God bless them.

Investigators are focusing on a Monroe County man as a suspect who planted a powerful bomb inside a car that injured an attorney and his two sons as they drove to football practice.
Sources this morning confirmed that investigators have targeted a suspect and believe a pipe bomb was used to blow up a car in which local attorney Erik G. Chappell and his sons were riding Tuesday.
"They have a suspect in mind," the police source said.
Investigators used metal detectors as they collected evidence from the scene Wednesday afternoon on E. Elm Ave. near I-75. It is believed a pipe bomb packed with shrapnel was used and placed inside the car underneath the passenger seat where one of the boys was sitting.
Meanwhile, shock, dismay, anger and disbelief resonated throughout the community after the news of the car bomb indicated a sinister plot against Mr. Chappell and his family.
The suspect is believed to be one of Mr. Chappell's clients.

I just saw this on the local news in the NY/NJ area. I've been praying for the boy's and hoping that they can overcome their injuries.

So saddened that some evil person would hurt or cause injury to this father & his children. Prayers to the family and hoping the boy's injuries will heal. I hope they catch the person that put a bomb in the car. I'm so upset.

In this video, it is stated that the man practices family law and that is being blamed for the incident. Also, listen to the 911 operator. Jeez Louise. He sounds so annoyed that anyone dares to intrude on his nap. He actually sighs when he answers the call.

I mean, you've got a man and two children who were injured in a car bombing and the operator sounds bored, annoyed and disinterested. What a creep, IMO: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us...n-car-explosion.monroe-evening-news?hpt=hp_t2

to say they have a suspect in mind and that it's one of his clients ... well, that makes me think the suspect is under tight surveillance and they're just waiting on warrants to arrest him

don't think I've ever read that particular wording in another case

I'm very interested to find out who it is

The investigation into the car bombing apparently has spread to another state and reportedly is focusing on at least two men.

Officials would not confirm the direction of the investigation or if an arrest is near, but sources say at least one of the persons of interest the police are looking into is the estranged spouse of a client of attorney Erik Chappell, whose car exploded on E. Elm Ave. Tuesday afternoon.

Further on in the article:

Sources have told The Evening News that Mr. Chappell has been threatened in recent weeks but apparently did not file a police report.
