Stewart Trial
Monday March 7, 2011

Prosecution admits phone records into evidence.

Lena Powell, Colon MI - testified that she saw a man "soaking wet" near her home in April 2010, saw the man before she knew Venus was missing.

Mark Thomason testified he saw "soaking wet" man, who acted like "he did something wrong". Venus' cousin called him and said "soaking wet" man might have something to do with Venus' disappearance. Thomason does not see "soaking wet" man in courtroom but there's a similarity.

Frederick Brandt says he saw Venus' parents digging a hole by the side of the road.

Brian Wages testifies that in April a car with Virginia plates was driving in front of him, the man wouldn't look at him as he passed. He saw a woman in the passenger seat with her head up against the window with something that looked like "a sleeping bag". He didn't think much about the slow moving car at first...but after hearing about Venus' disappearance contacted MSP.

Tony Duke went to school with Venus. Testified he saw someone who looked like Venus and her husband at a MI Dollar General store before he heard she disappeared. He didn't talk to the person, and can't be sure it was Venus. Duke says realized the man he saw may have been Venus' husband Doug after seeing news reports. Duke says he saw the two at Dollar General near the end of April 2010.

Donna Cratsenburg Scott, who had lived across the street from the Stewart family, said she saw a silver-colored Sedan on April 25 that looked like the one that belonged to Venus and Doug Stewart.

Before Venus Stewart vanished, 'soaking wet' man spotted near her parents' home, witnesses say

Several witnesses testified Monday at the Venus Stewart murder trial that they noticed a man who drove unusually slow or was soaking wet and appeared nervous shortly before the time she disappeared from her parents' home in rural St. Joseph County.

The witnesses took the stand Monday as the trial continued in which her estranged husband, Doug Stewart, is charged with first-degree premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder in the abduction and alleged slaying of Venus Stewart.

I think "swamp man" lol was another person bought off by Doug to throw the investigation off, jmo of course.... Or he was another man up to no good that day for different reasons

Well, it's definitely him in the Walmart surveillance, but so far, no real evidence tying him to the crime scene. I hope they have more guns in their arsenal because the prosecution's case is supposed to wrap up on Wednesday. The judge was even exclaiming that they were entering a lot of evidence without many positive results. Fingers crossed that they can nail him down in the next couple of days.

Hopefully they can.......the State only has one shot unless there is a hung jury. If only Venus' body had been found!

Well, that fingerprint seems mighty telling to me! I hope it does to the jurors as well.

When was the first time MSP Lt Chuck Christiansen first testify?

He's the detective that questioned Ricky Spencer in DE.

Doing a quick search it appears it was Friday, March 4, 2011 ...

CENTREVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - A controversial GPS map was the center of attention Wednesday in a St. Joseph County courtroom.

The prosecution asked to admit the map from Tuesday, offering to change some of the labels that the defense objected to during testimony. The defense and prosecution talked about what changes need to be made to the potentially inflammatory GPS map.

The defense said points reading "abduction" and "heading to Michigan" need to be removed from the map. The defense objects that even if potentially inflammatory labels are removed from the map, different color labels are inappropriate.

Doug Stewart cell phone used outside Venus Stewart's parents' home on morning she disappeared

Published: Wednesday, March 09, 2011, 6:27 PM By Rex Hall Jr. | Kalamazoo Gazette

On the morning Venus Stewart disappeared, a cellular phone purchased by her estranged husband at a Hampton, Va., Walmart was used to call her parents' Colon Township home, a Michigan State Police detective testified Wednesday.

The call, which was made at 7:17 a.m. on April 26, hit off a cellular tower near Colon, not far from the Driftwood Drive residence of Stewart's parents, Therese and Larry McComb, Detective Sgt. Shane Kriger said under questioning from St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough.

Criger was the last witness called Wednesday during testimony in the trial of Doug Stewart.

CENTREVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - A late start, a series of objections, a nearly two-hour recess and a continued fight over what is and isn't admissible punctuated the Doug Stewart murder trial Wednesday in St. Joseph County.

On Tuesday, defense attorneys Jeffrey Schroder and Kymberly Schroder objected to the introduction of a map prepared by Michigan State Police investigators that purported to plot the cell phone calls of Doug Stewart and his alleged accomplice, Ricky Spencer.

In early courtroom action, the prosecution asked to admit the map, offering to change some of the labels that the defense objected to during testimony. The defense and prosecution talked about what changes need to be made to the potentially inflammatory GPS map.
