FBI investigating explosion at Minnesota mosque
FBI: Islamic Center blast caused by improvised explosive device
Shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday, Bloomington police responded to a call of an explosion at the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center near Interstate Hwy. 494 and Portland Avenue South.
By late Saturday afternoon, the FBI said the preliminary investigation indicated the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device, but would not characterize the device further. They said their focus was to determine the "who and why" behind the incident.
An explosion shook a Minneapolis-area mosque during morning prayers Saturday, and an FBI official said it was caused by an improvised explosive device.
Rick Thornton, the FBIs special agent in charge of the investigation, told reporters Saturday afternoon that the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device but offered no further details about its composition or possible suspects. Neither the FBI nor the Bloomington Police Department, which initially responded to the explosion, speculated on a motive for the incident.
At this point, our focus is to determine who and why, Thornton said at a news conference. Is it a hate crime? Is it an act of terror? Again, thats what the investigation is going to determine.
