What we know about Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao, two of the officers caught on tape in the death of George Floyd

The Minneapolis police officer shown on video kneeling on George Floyd’s neck as Floyd pleaded for help, along with another officer who stood by and watched, have both been involved in use-of-force incidents over their careers.

Officer Derek Chauvin has been identified as the officer pinning down Floyd in the now-viral video, which shows Floyd saying he can’t breathe repeatedly before losing consciousness. Floyd later died. Four officers on scene have been fired. They have not yet been officially identified by department officials.

Chauvin, 44, is a 19-year department veteran. Department records and news accounts show that he has been involved in several police-involved shootings over his career.

In 2017, Lamar Ferguson sued Thao and another officer, Robert Thunder, for excessive use of force. According to the lawsuit, Ferguson and a woman who was eight months pregnant were walking home when Thao and Thunder stopped and searched them without cause. The officers handcuffed Ferguson, and Thao threw him to the ground and began punching him, while Thunder kicked him, according to the allegations.

The officers took Ferguson to the hospital for medical treatment. Afterward, they escorted Ferguson to jail wearing only his underwear and T-shirt, rejecting hospital staff’s requests that he be allowed to fully dress, according to the complaint.

The case settled out of court for $25,000, according to Seth Leventhal, one of Ferguson’s attorneys.

These cops are thugs.

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

The protests are understandable, people are fighting for their basic human rights. Something has to change. IMO until enough white people (I'm white) speak out, acknowledge the inequities that still exist, support all our brothers and sisters regardless of colour and hold ourselves and each other accountable for our words and actions things won't change.

Murders like this will keep occurring, people will keep blaming the victims and the Amy Coopers of the world will keep putting Black men's lives in jeopardy. https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/central-park-white-woman-black-man-racism-dog-leash-1.5585148

The murderous cop kneeling on Georges neck until he died should be up on a murder charge, an absolute disgrace - RIP George, much love and deepest sympathies to his family / friends.
I'm from the UK, I sat and cried for the poor man and hope that justice is served asap :(.

What she did was disgusting.

Well, where are the charges for murdering this man? Mr. Floyd was handcuffed and could not defend himself. How long does it take to write up the charges and take it to the court for a warrant? If a man was killed in this way in a bar fight, the perpetrator would be sitting in jail. Why is this man and the other men who committed this murder free to roam among all of us? These are men who own guns. Should they have their guns if this is what they do to other people?

Come on, now. It is time to charge them and start the prosecution.

I can't breathe. Mr. Floyd will never breathe again. Millions of people of color are afraid of the people who are hired to help them. Let's go, Minneapolis.

Ive been pretty pleased by the reactions from officials, I hope they can back up their words. since the state as well as federal is investigating I hope that multiple charges get brought ASAP.

just got back from a walk to the precinct.. crazy graffiti everywhere and peaceful protests still going on... friends have told me the protests will pick up again tonight, hope everyone stays safe !
KEEP ON FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT!

I also can't believe seeing a cop doing a piece to film saying George resisted arrest (this is ), I've seen footage of the arrest from the other side (filmed by a savvy passer by) that shows nothing of the sort. You can't defend what was done to that man, the cop should be on a murder charge.

He was calling out for his mama as he was dying. This is beyond appalling.

Yes, I heard that and nothing can make me un-hear it. Just sick over this. Can anyone even imagine one of our children calling out our name as they are being murdered. It's just too upsetting to think about. We need justice for this murder.

From June, 2018. Interesting.

Hmong woman to compete for Mrs. Minnesota title

It was at the hospital that she met her current husband, Derek Chauvin. The Minneapolis police officer spotted his future wife when he brought someone in for a health check before an arrest. After taking the suspect to jail, Derek Chauvin returned and asked her out.

“Under all that uniform, he’s just a softie,” Kellie Chauvin said. “He’s such a gentleman. He still opens the door for me, still puts my coat on for me. After my divorce, I had a list of must-haves if I were ever to be in a relationship, and he fit all of them.”
