Fravel on Trial, Day 2: First jurors are selected

In the second day of the murder trial of Adam Fravel, it was a long, grueling period of jury selections.

Court officials are looking for 17 people to sit on the case — 12 jurors and five alternates.

20 potential jurors were chosen from Monday’s panel, and 10 were questioned further on Tuesday.

Both teams of attorneys have the ability to strike out a juror, immediately removing them from the case. The defense team has already utilized one of its strikes.

As of Tuesday, there are three jurors slated on this trail, all being women.

Tuesday, the court has narrowed down a list of 20 potential jurors to be individually questioned by the judge, defense and state.

As of 5 p.m. on Tuesday, ten jurors have been questioned, with seven having been excused. Three jurors have been officially selected for the trial. ...

During the selection process the defense started with 15 strikes, meaning they can remove a juror. The state started with nine strikes. Fravel’s defense has used two strikes. If the judge decides to remove the juror, neither side needs to use a strike.

Fravel on Trial, Day 3: Jury selection continues; both sides utilize strikes on potential jurors

Wednesday marked the third of trial for Adam Fravel, the man accused of murdering the mother of his children last year in Winona.

As of Wednesday evening, the jury consists of five people: a retail sales representative, a paralegal, a retired store owner, a physician’s assistant, and a mother.

Fravel’s defense team has meticulously vetted through each potential juror, on average questioning jurors twice as long as the state.

Fravel on Trial, Day 4: Setbacks in filling the jury and a rare occurrence during selection

The Adam Fravel trial entered its fourth day on Thursday, and it is seeing quite a few setbacks.

During Thursday’s jury selection, a shocking event occurred — one that a court official says in all of his 20 years, he has never seen happen before.

A juror who never showed up on Wednesday was picked up by law enforcement Thursday morning and forced into the courthouse.

After screaming and causing a scene in the parking lot, he walked into the courtroom barefoot and in a tank top and basketball shorts, making it very clear he had no interest in serving his civic duty.

He was then excused.

Judge Nancy Buytendorp dismissed the juror as being unfit to serve on a jury.

Three other jurors were dismissed from the panel on Thursday morning.

As of today, opening arguments are expected to begin next Wednesday.

Judge Nancy should have thrown that unfit juror in jail for a few days for contempt of court for not showing up when ordered.

Fravel on Trial, Day 5: Friday sees most jurors sat in a single day

Adam Fravel, the man charged with murdering the mother of his children, was on trial for the fifth day on Friday.

Though Friday saw the most jurors sat in a single day, the process has been anything but quick. It was supposed to be the final day of jury selection, but now, that process is being extended into next week.

As things stand heading into the weekend, 11 jurors have been sat with four being added on Friday. The panel remains female-dominated with six women compared to five men.

• The Defense has used 10 out of 15
• The State has used 3 out of 9

A history of domestic violence was painted to the jury, as Propokowicz walked through several instances that friends or family saw abuse happening by Fravel to Kingsbury. One of these dates back to 2021, when Kingsbury was watching coverage on the Gabby Petito case. Propokowicz said that “Fravel put his hands around her neck, pushed her down and threatened she would end up like Petito if she did not learn to mind.”

After 45 minutes, Propokowicz wrapped up his opening statement.

On the other side, Fravel’s lead attorney, Bauer, told the courtroom it, “all comes down to a case of tunnel vision,
revisionist history and secret truths.”

Bauer argued that 24 hours after Kingsbury was reported missing on March 31, 2023, law enforcement zeroed in on Fravel and Fravel alone. Bauer stated that from April 1 until Kingsbury’s body was discovered on June 7 of that same year, Fravel was under constant surveillance. He claimed that law enforcement ignored evidence and despite several search warrants on Fravel’s person, property, electronics, vehicles and even his garbage, no direct evidence was found.

A jury has been seated and opening statements were underway Thursday morning in the trial of Adam Fravel, a 29-year-old man accused of killing Madeline Kingsbury, who was his ex-girlfriend and mother of his children.

Kingsbury’s cause of death was ruled to be asphyxiation and a bath towel was found wrapped in a slip know around her neck. The prosecution says a photo on Kingsbury’s phone of her children bathing in a bathroom shows the same bath towel hanging on a towel rack.
