A vigil ceremony was held in downtown Winona on Saturday to remember the life of Madeline Kingsbury.

Saturday was her birthday. Community members, family and friends honored her life while also bringing awareness to domestic violence.

Multiple organizations that helped victims and survivors of domestic violence worked together to bring this vigil together for Madeline’s family.

The organizations included The Advocacy Center of Winona, HOPE Coalition, Women’s Shelter and Support Center, and Bluff Country Family Resources.

“It’s a good chance for people to get together and celebrate her and remember her, and then just kind of talk about domestic violence as a whole because it kind of just feels like an invisible epidemic. It’s not talked about a lot, so it’s a good opportunity to do that,” Madeline’s sister Megan Kingsbury said.

For Madeline’s family and friends, it’s great to continue seeing community support them more than a year later.

Adam Fravel is charged with murder in the death of Madeline Kingsbury, and Friday his defense filed a nine-page document to move the case from Winona County.

June 7th is also the day Madeline Kingsbury's remains were found north of Mabel in Fillmore County, one year ago.

For a full look at the filing, see the attached document:

In previous contested omnibus hearings, or pretrial business, the court heard arguments from both sides about motions. Fravel’s defense team is looking to suppress evidence and statements, as well as dismiss first-degree murder charges.

Winona County Judge Nancy Buytendorp has yet to make a ruling on any of the pretrial motions.

According to the motion, 98.5% of the people surveyed in an public opinion poll interacted with a news story and "formed an opinion" from those stories. The state argued that that poll, which was brought to the court through the defendant's briefing and in-person testimony back in April, that the poll was a "snapshot in time." The defense also included screenshots of reports they claim were "false or misleading."

The defense also said there was material during 2023 Steamboat Days, including during the parade, with statements like "Justice for Maddi."

"Based on the evidence submitted and the arguments in this memorandum and other briefing by Defendant on this issue, the Defendant respectfully requests that the Court find that there is reasonable likelihood fair trial cannot be had in Winona County given the prejudicial pretrial materials and publications in this case," the defense team concluded in Friday's motion.

Change of venue granted:

A win for the State all the way around today. Doesn’t matter what County the case is presented to a jury in. The evidence is overwhelming and a conviction will be obtained. Aggravated departure notice to jury, motion granted :)

Buytendorp denied other motions from Fravel's attorneys to dismiss first-degree murder charges against him and suppress comments Fravel made to police several months before his arrest in June 2023. She also signed off on the prosecution's request to seek harsher sentencing for Fravel if he's convicted based on the deliberate concealment of Kingsbury's body, which was missing for several months.

Fravel has been granted a change of venue for his prosecution but no new location has been selected yet. Minnesota court communications specialist Kyle Christopherson says until a new county is picked to hold the trial, the pretrial hearings will be scheduled to take place at the Winona County Courthouse.

The jury trial will take place outside of a Winona County; however, the pretrial court proceedings will still play out in Winona on September 3-4.

These types of hearings take place to resolve issues surrounding how the trial will take place such as witness scheduling or the presentation of evidence.

Blue Earth County

Hi @Megnut - thank you!

Maddie's favourite colour:)

Rough estimate: Winona County to Blue Earth County, 131 miles, 2hours, 9minutes.

As someone previously said, the trial can be held anywhere, evidence doesn't lie, unlike AF.

Roll-on-justice for Madeline Kingsbury, her children, her family, friends & all who love her & miss her.

MOO

Adam Fravel’s pretrial hearing is scheduled to last for two days and begins at 9 AM on Tuesday morning. This pretrial will be held in Winona County despite Fravel’s murder trial being moved to Blue Earth County following a defense motion to move it.

  • His attorneys are looking to block hearsay statements made during the Grand Jury proceedings that prosecutors plan to use at the trial.
  • The motion also covers other hearsay statements offered at the trial that weren't used at the Grand Jury proceedings.
  • Some of the statements are from Madeline Kingsbury's parents.
... According to court filings, key witnesses could be called to the stand as the state and defense finalize their cases for a jury.

As both sides work to ensure a fair trial, the defense has made several pre-trial motions ahead of the pre-trial hearings. Defense attorney Zachary Bauer has requested witnesses be sequestered during the pre-trial hearing. Bauer also motioned to have all witnesses be excluded from the courtroom during the trial process.
