A few weeks ago, I was driving and there were two girls about 10-13 walking down the street, in my neighborhood. It is a a family middle to upper class neighborhood. I saw an SUV pull to the curb and the girls talk to them and then walk to the car. I sped up and grabbed my phone. I didn't know what to think. Could this be family, a creep.... I got up as close as I could and saw it was a female driving and then the girls walked off. My guess it was someone they knew.

Now, had in been on foot, everything would have been different. I think in our cars we instinctively feel safer and move faster. I don't know that I would have even approached the vehicle on foot. I can tell you if something happened, I wouldn't have been able to give a description as well as those witnesses because I wear glasses only while driving. Every single person does things without thinking. It is how we live and show we exist. I think the witnesses did an amazing job and wish they could have done more. It is a shame that people are kicking them when they already feel down. If it wasn't for them, the family may still not have answers about their daughter.

Good post.

What's really disgusting here is this 'person' decided to molest and murder a young girl. Now he's not talking. He's probably proud of what he did. Who knows.

But we do know that he'll be provided a team of lawyers who will delay, obstruct, obfuscate, and otherwise do everything they can to put off justice indefinitely. That's the usual pattern. In the meantime he'll enjoy three meals a day, free medical and dental care, and have all the attorneys he needs to manage the years (or even decades) of appeals that will follow upon his conviction.

THAT's what's really disgusting here, in addition to the horrific nature of the crime itself.

I am just catching up. Did they confirm she was molested or are you assuming?

With him being (reportedly) a football coach. I am wondering if young girls were his only interest? I'm hoping they bring in Specialist with kids to talk to them about contact with them. Kids that age don't want to admit certain things done. Hope I'm wrong. That guy in gym showers is not a good idea. From the Kansas City Star:

"The Springfield School District said Wood is a seventh-grade football coach and teacher’s aide who supervises in-school suspensions at Pleasant View K-8 School. School spokesman Teresa Bledsoe said that Wood was initially hired as a temporary employee who worked as a substitute teacher before he was hired full time in 2006. He has coached football at Pleasant View since 1998 and was also an assistant boys’ basketball coach. They first checked the house at 8:30 (iirc) to see if there was someone in need of assistance. No one was found to need assistance. They came back with a search warrant at 2:30am. At 2:50am they found what was determined 7+ hours later to be a small female body.

I'm sure the presser is recorded somewhere. It makes it pretty clear that they weren't sure that what they found was a human or female at the time of it's finding. It wasn't until 10:45am CST that they said with confidence that it was a young female human body.

About 11:30 p.m., authorities searched the area around the home on Stanford Street.

“That resulted in evidence to this case and evidence of foul play,” Williams said.

He did something horrendous to Hailey, in order to hide her body. There was evidence of whatever he did, OUTSIDE the home.

he reminds me a bit (so far) of John Albert Gardener (Chelsea King and Amber Dubois)

bbm: I believe I have read that he was a para (not a teacher)?

he was the para and a football coach, he did the ISS room--I believe he would still have the first part of the summer off, at least, until football two-a-days started up around August.

I agree.

I live around the corner from an elementary and middle school and along the walking route for many high school students. If I were to confront every person who stopped to talk to a child while in a vehicle, I would be confronting people all day, every day. Sometimes I notice situations that seem strange, but no one can honestly believe that everyone should confront every one of those situations. At some point you have to believe the best in people, until something tells you otherwise.

Springfield County Schools posted this, and SGF Police shared it on their FB page. I know we have some folks who are local and even have family and friends who are close to the school. I can't imagine how you all are feeling, but I'm sending comforting, healing thoughts to all of you. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones.

I think we have a rule here about not bashing victims?:banghead: In fact I know we do! And I consider the witness's as victims to this crime as well. So can we please stop with bashing them? Thanks in advance!

I don't think it's just the fact that he approached her, but that he circled the neighborhood several times scouting out a child, once he spotted her then he approached. The neighbors saw him circling. They must have been concerned to some extent to be watching diligently enough to see him grab her. If the entire ordeal only lasted 10 seconds, then something about him approaching her caught their attention as out of the ordinary to begin with.

I'm not faulting the witnesses, they did good chasing him after he abducted her, they got good information, etc.

this was recently updated (snip)

The Amber Alert for Hailey's disappearance went out about 7 p.m. Tuesday, two hours after Hailey was abducted. Williams said those two hours were how long it took police to confirm all the information about the abduction and get the information to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, which administers Missouri's official Amber Alert web site.

Wood was arrested in his driveway about 8:30 p.m. He was booked into the county jail around 11:30 p.m. Police obtained a search warrant from a judge for Wood's home about 2:15 a.m. They executed the search warrant about 8:30 a.m. They confirmed they had a body that likely was a girl around 10:30 a.m.

the part i really dont understand is it taking 2 hours to confirm the information. this is life or death for that little girl. do all AA take that long to get out?

ETA: I know that it isn't LE's fault that Hailey was taken and I should probably let this go. I'd just like them to be faster about the process in the future.

Probably trying to find out the victims ID to put in the AA

I'm very upset by the delay in the amber alert, but from what I've read this was actually issued rather quickly compared to many others.

To me, this makes the amber alert almost completely pointless, unless a child is taken by a non-custodial not violent parent. If an abduction is witnessed and there is a vehicle description, license plate number, and a suspect description, why any delay? It's very upsetting to me.

Maybe because of the information regarding him traveling to OK, I had a much higher hope of her being found alive. I was devastated this morning to find out she was dead. I wasn't expecting it, in most cases I see it coming.

If he had a computer, which I will be surprised that he didn't, it will be real interesting as to what they will find on it. Hope they get a search warrant for electronic devices, IMO they would.

So they were issued the search warrant at 8:30am and at 10:30am they confirmed they had a body that "likely was a girl". 2 hours went by then they said it was likely a girl?? What does that mean? :banghead:

Also I wanted to address the post about a student who had ISS with CW as the supervisor. He said CW was a pothead. How did he know that? Did CW sit around with the students talking about it?

In one of the interviews I saw, the witness mentioned he (perp) drove up and down --- so then he asks Hailey where Springfield Street is ... good cover for driving up and down is that you are looking for a street or address.

I think that poster also had friends who knew him in HS, and he was a pothead at that time.
