Two things which I think are very weak when it comes to figuring people out: "analysis" via body language, or via "statement analysis" - both examples of pop psychology, and both of which don't get the job done.

While I believe body language & statement analysis can be useful tools, both are dependent upon the observer's subjective interpretation as well as the observer's skill in reading the signals.

Speaking from personal experience, as I've grown older (and hopefully wiser), I've learned to accurately detect the warning signs of a potential abuser, and I've counseled young women on how to recognize these same signs (both covert & overt) so they don't fall victim to abusive partners.

I've also learned to be aware of the subtle cues of danger (after finding myself in more than one life-threatening predicament over the course of my days). Gavin DeBecker has an excellent book on the subject: The Gift of Fear.

I don't discount body language analysis or statement analysis, because I believe we all use these innate tools in our daily interactions, whether consciously or subconsciously.

I think we need to use these tools wisely, though, and not use them as a stone to hurl at someone in the absence of solid, physical evidence.

I refer to my daughter as "the kid", however, she is 24 years old. Her step dad refers to her as "your kid" when she wants something and "our kid" when she does something nice. However, we both refer to her by her first name when we are talking to people that know her. If we are talking to people that don't know her, i refer to her as "my daughter".

As I type this, I find myself automatically avoiding her name, not because I don't want to call her by name but because I want to protect her from people that don't know her. That maternal instinct to protect our children from strangers, lurkers, and even the media could just be coming automatically for the parents during these interviews. Even though they know they need to get her name out there, the parental instinct to protect our child's identity from strangers is probably quite strong regardless of the situation.

Just saying.

I frequently refer to my SIX year old as The Kid, The Monk, The Brat and occasionally The Little Turd, and only call him Ben to his face. We only have one kid so we know everyone knows exactly who I mean when I use his many nicknames.

HOWEVER, if I were on the news, talking about him under these circumstances I would be calling him Ben or Benjamin - this is serious business and requires me to be serious. I'd want all of the people who were watching to hear his name as many times as possible so that if they saw him they would remember his name.

Can't a grand jury be used as an investigative tool, as well as to indict?

Yes, however, when LE seeks their assistance there usually is a theory or POI. Therefore it appears the ultimate goal would be an indictment.

MOO

I am so afraid of what this Grand Jury means....

Me too EllaMae...and I hate it for this baby...but going out on a limb...it really seems they must suspect the parents...the teen wasn't interviewed..so they don't need that footage for the GJ.

I'm thinking that the reason they want the raw video is because it is date/time stamped. It could be that someone on that video - whose alibi is that they were far away - is ON THAT TAPE and proves they were in KC. JMO of course - but it would make sense.
the only questions are 1) WHO? and 2) WHEN?
Locals - how soon were the news crews on the street and talking to people?

I apologize for bringing up the subject of chips being used on animals and someday on babies....like I said it is probably off the wall.

My thinking was if it was a way to find our missing children very fast it would be well worth it..

Didn't mean to create a controversy......

I wonder if there was a way to do a chip that either dissolves safely in the body or shuts itself off after 18 years so that when the baby becomes an adult, they can safely move about the planet without worrying that their every movement is being watched. But putting foreign things in the body of a baby kind of scares me because I have no idea what these kinds of things are made of. But I understand us wanting to find a way to know where these children are and saving them as soon as we can.

Just the fact that LE has something this soon to take to a grand jury is not sounding good for baby Lisa :(

WOW! They must have something to be going before a grand jury!

I think their case must be weak. Otherwise they would arrest. They want to compel people to appear. And I think it gives them subpoena power over things like the news interviews, any filming, whatever, despite any promises of confidentiality.

I'm seeing it done this way more and more these days. This is how they did it in Kyron Horman's disappearance, but they never finished convening.

Maybe they like it when a missing person/child hasn't been located? But they want to make an arrest, of that we can be sure.

ITA Kimster... open and continuous...

they have to have more to hear than video reports of the family

Just out of curiosity, how fast can DNA results come in if they are rushed?

In this article:

http://www.kansascity.com/2011/10/10/3199043/kc-police-search-backyard-of-missing.html

it talks about a young homeless man who had been in the neighborhood. Here's from the article:

Excerpt:

Nichols said he also saw the man about a week or two before Lisa was reported missing but not afterward. The two men spoke briefly at a nearby park weeks ago. The man told Nichols that he was looking for a job or any handy jobs in the neighborhood.

“He made me feel real uncomfortable,” Nichols said. “Something was not right, so I eased off from him.”

Just a silly question..How would the cops have a picture of this homeless man? Do we know the first name of the teen that has been questioned?

It's true about Lexapro, though.Expressing emotions, you don't get the low ,lows or the high ,high's. Everything hits you about the middle of the road.

That's why it's so difficult to assume we know what anyone should be doing or saying or how they should be acting (with the exception of Casey and Cindy Anthony :innocent: ). We don't what's going on with them.

LOL on Cindy and Casey. Yes I had the flat effect and didn't care for it at all.
