7/21/22 Update: This matter comes before the court for initial appearance after defendant was jailed on a warrant. Defendant appeared within 48 hours of his arrest in person. Defendant is read the complaint /Information/Indictment & advised pursuant the right to retain counsel, right to remain silent, that any statement made may be used against him & the right to apply for Public Defender. Defendant enters plea of not guilty. Defendant referred to Public Defender for representation. Court appoints the public defender’s office. Defendant was advised of bond rights under Supreme Court Rule 33.06 & allowed to address the court. After consideration of the arguments made at initial appearance, the court: Denies the request for bond change & sets the matter for bond hearing within seven working days of the initial appearance & directs the prosecuting attorney to notify any victims if victim notification is required. Bond hearing is set for 7/28/22 @ 1:30pm. A Preliminary hearing is scheduled on 9/2/22 @ 9am.

Rocha and his attorneys are scheduled to be in court Tuesday afternoon to formally request a change of venue because of the amount of attention the case has received in the Kansas City area.

While the judge will hear the request during a hearing Tuesday afternoon, a decision on whether to move the trial is not expected right away.

The suspect in the shooting death of a North Kansas City, Missouri, police officer last year may face the death penalty.

The Clay County Prosecuting Attorney's Office announced in a news release Tuesday morning that it has filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty against Joshua T. Rocha.
