Freda Knowshisgun's family on Montana's Crow Indian Reservation began to worry something truly terrible may have happened when an aunt passed away in the fall of 2016 and she didn't come home.

Knowshisgun, a mother of three, always had been known to be especially gifted and bright in her large, tightknit family, says her older sister, Frances. But for about a year before she vanished, she had started to come and go from her family's home, sometimes disappearing for days at a time, as she fell on tough times and hung around with "the wrong people," her sister says.

In November 2016, her mother reported her missing to police, but officers initially told the family there might be little they could do since Freda was an adult and there was no known crime, according to her sister.

"It seemed like they weren't helping at all because she jumped into the wrong crowd," Frances Knowshisgun says.

The FBI has since become involved in the search for Freda, but every day that she's gone, the anguish over where she might be and what may have happened to her weighs on her family.

"It sits on our chest and shoulders," her sister says.

Knowshisgun had traveled to Washington and was at the Kennewick Walmart that Oct. 18, according to her missing person profile on The Charley Project. The 34-year-old mother of three called a relative saying she needed money to get home and a friend agreed to send it through an online money transfer to the store, said her older sister, Frances Knows Gun.

Her friend misspelled her last name and then tried to fix it, Frances said, but in that time, the store closed for the evening. She corrected it and assumed Freda would claim the money at the customer service counter the next morning, but she never did.

Freda Jane Knows His Gun – The Charley Project

Details of Disappearance
Knows His Gun was last heard from on October 18, 2016. She was at a Walmart in Kennewick, Washington at the time. She called a friend in Billings, Montana and asked for an online money transfer so she would have enough money to get home to Crow Agency, Montana, 740 miles away; she had promised her children she'd take them trick-or-treating for Halloween.

Her friend agreed to send her the money, and Knows His Gun said she was waiting at the Walmart customer service counter for it. Fifteen minutes later, her friend called her back to see if the money had arrived, but Knows His Gun's phone wasn't working anymore and she never picked up the money. She has never been heard from again.

Knows His Gun's family filed a missing persons report on November 14, after she missed her aunt's funeral; they had been close. Her loved ones stated she had been spending a lot of time in Billings, Montana before she went missing and had fallen in with a bad crowd. She was distancing herself from her family and began abusing drugs.

It's not uncharacteristic of Knows His Gun to drop out of sight for a few days at a time, but she's never been gone for this long. Since her disappearance, her new friends have been uncooperative with the police about her case. The circumstances of her disappearance are unclear and her case remains unsolved.

Crow Agency, Montana police are investigating Knows Gun's case.

Her sister described her as “... especially gifted and bright …,” while another report described Freda as smart and a fast learner who was working to finish college.

At the time of her disappearance, Freda’s physical description was as follows: American Indian woman, 5’5” tall, approximately 150 pounds, waist-length brown hair that was always tied back, brown eyes, with a scar on her right elbow and multiple tattoos (her children’s names—Lyrical, Trinity, and Mason—between her shoulder blades, Mickey Mouse with a basketball on her right calf, and a tiger lily on her right shoulder).

Freda was last seen at a Walmart customer service counter in Kennewick, Washington, on October 18, 2016. She called a friend to ask for an online money transfer so she could afford the 740-mile trip back home to Crow Agency, Montana, in time to take her kids trick-or-treating for Halloween. The friend agreed to send the money, but there was a mistake with the spelling of Freda’s name, so the friend attempted to correct it.

By the time the corrected transfer was sent (less than 15 minutes from the original exchange between the friend and Freda), the Walmart store had closed, and Freda was unable to claim the money. The friend called back to confirm that Freda got the transfer, but Freda’s phone was no longer in service. That was the last time anyone saw or heard from her.

Freda’s mother reported her missing on November 14, 2016, after Freda did not show up for her aunt’s funeral—in Indigenous culture, it is rare to miss a loved one’s memorial. A second missing person report was filed December 11, 2016, updating Freda’s last name from “Know Gun” to “Knowshisgun.”

Due to jurisdictional confusion among state, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies, the report of Freda’s disappearance was passed from Hardin, Montana, to Crow Agency to Big Horn County to the FBI. At first, officials did not believe there was much they could do because Freda was an adult, and there was no evidence of foul play. Freda’s sister Frances thinks they did not take the case seriously because Freda had recently started using drugs and hanging out with new friends. As Frances put it, “It seemed like they weren’t helping at all because she jumped into the wrong crowd.”

Bumping for Freda. Still no sign of her, huh? However, from what I understand her last name was written as Know Gun, then corrected to Knowshisgun, took me a while to realize it was actually Knows His Gun.
That misspelling might make it harder for family to get help.
