The family said Roberto wasn't always the man you see now in his mug shot. Before he moved from El Salvador, the family recounts a time when his grandmother would call him her "best grandkid." He was one of more than 25 children in the family, but he stood out. He would cook his mother dinner without being asked, and offer to do things around the family home.
Eight or nine years ago he met his current girlfriend Gabriela Guevara. The family told WOWT 6 News that she spurred something inside of him.
"He was really good, man," said one of his uncles.
"When he started a relationship with her everything changed."
Investigators are not publicizing anything about the motive. The family said they don't know what caused the recent strain either. Guevara, who is charged with five accessory to felony charges declined a jailhouse interview with WOWT 6 News earlier this week.
The family isn't sure what will come next.
Angel, the 11-month old boy who survived this week's violent spree, is back home with the family. His aunt told WOWT 6 News that she will give him every bit of love that she can.
Eventually the family plans to tell Angel about his mother and brother, but for now they can only raise him and hope that he can have a good life without his mother.
The idea of raising Angel without a brother is a difficult one for everyone in the family.
His cousin said they say Josue's name and Angel turns as if to look for his brother, not knowing he'll never see him the same way again.
