I don't even want to type what I'm about to but...potentially her body was not intact?

Because like someone else said....why else assume there's something there...like a gun etc.

I thought that thought too. I am hoping it is not the case because as bad as I think this case is, it didn't occur to me it would be THAT bad.

Let's hope for some news from LE soon.

If she was dismembered/scattered, I don't think that LE would have been so bold as to release their virtual certainty that this is Sydney. JMO

Hi all. Loooooong time lurker, first time poster.

...I love this site, usually get some good updates here on cases I'm following...which was definitely true for this case. I see a lot of speculation here so I wanted to throw my .02 into the ring...I've been following this sad case since the beginning. It's tough to read, but this is what I believe as far as how things unfolded:

Motive is unclear. Could be sexual in nature, robbery, or something as simple as a drug induced fight. The best clue I gleaned from the ill-advised Facebook videos was actually the wax and shatter references. Sydney was a young girl who liked to get high, but the right (actually wrong) concentration of dabs (wax & shatter) can put someone in a bad mental state - that delusional paranoia could have escalated tenfold in the company of folks she suddenly felt insecure around.

First date: Just a girl/girl rendezvous with some weed. Nice, innocent and clearly they hit it off.

Second date: Let's go back to my place and get even higher than we did yesterday....but... Where does a 51 year old lowlife dude fit into that? Did he just show up on them or was he there when they arrived? Did Sydney expect him to be there? Was he hiding in another room to pounce when the time was right? Any one of these scenarios could turn one's mind against itself with the wax & shatter.

I don't see a robbery UNLESS she was expected to have money to buy drugs. I know we're not dealing with the sharpest crooks here, but who goes through all this just to rob a 24 year old Menards cashier? UNLESS she brought money to buy some of that high end weed that was mentioned in the video...

Sydney went missing on 11/15. AT and BB weren't publicly named as POI until 11/28. A lot was going on during that time.

In all likelihood, LE's first clue was the Tinder account that she interacted with. Took some time to vet that, and it led them to the POI. They didn't go public with that though. Rather, they went looking for AT and BB on their own. AT corroborates that theory by mentioning in the video how they went to his ex-wife's house. Now you have two people who know that the police want to talk to them. If they had nothing to hide, all they had to do was come forward. When they didn't, LE used anything they could to bring them in. Hence the warrant issued on 11/21 for AT and of course executing an otherwise minor bench warrant on BB. This gives them cause to apprehend the POI, who forced their hand to go that route by not turning themselves in.

As all these factors make them look that much more suspicious, their cell phone records are subpoenaed. They're traced to the casino in Council Bluffs Iowa either by their cell records or a tip. As soon as their names & faces are released, a tip was called in that they were spotted in a hotel in Spencer, Iowa (150 miles north of the casino). They probably make the videos from there, after dying hair/shaving/etc, and head down to Missouri. By now LE has a bead on them, and they're apprehended the next day. They did NOT turn themselves in.

AT and BB phone records led them to Sydney. At this point there is plenty of evidence to tie them to the crime. Expect LE to gather as much as they can to solidify their case. Autopsy results and forensic analysis will undoubtedly lead to homicide as the COD. These two numbskulls are probably already singing like canaries. They've built an ironclad case against themselves already and you can expect that to get worse.

The big question is going to be: why? I'm thinking either things just got out of hand by getting really high with a couple of unsavory strangers and realizing she was in a bad place, or she had a decent amount of money to buy drugs and was robbed, fought back and was killed in the heat of the moment. I don't think it was sexual or trafficking.

The next question is if there is anyone else. I can't think there is - these two clearly don't plan well.

Sad, sad sad state of affairs and a life cut short for nothing.

I believe the police were actually in contact with them at some point. AT states this in the video but also at one of the earlier press conferences it was stated that Sydney’s date was known and they had been in contact (I personally believe this was done via phone). I think they kept tabs on them and followed up on Bailey’s claim that they were to go to the casino for the weekend. Checked out casino security and got their photos.

I wonder why they expanded it. It means they are expecting to find something they haven't found.

Or maybe a trail of evidence is scattered rather than all in one place? IDK

jmo

It just said they were continuing to look for any evidence. Did not say if anything had or had not been found.

Absolutely agree they had contact as was corroborated. None of the info they spoke about checked out, and that only increased suspicion. I'm pretty sure LE knows exactly what happened already. They need to put it together for the prosecution before they disclose anything - and even then we won't see much. Have to wait until the press FOILs the arrest affadavit....

I hope so, too. Isn't AT being held on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm?

It could be an indication that she was shot....and they're looking for a gun.

I think AT is being held on being a felon in possession of a firearm, or a similar type charge. I remember there was some legal maneuvering on the warrant and it is sealed. Perhaps they are looking for a gun.

But why would they assume a gun would be there?

jmo

Though AT denied having a firearm in one of the videos, he's being held on that charge (as a felon - it is prohibited).

From Beatrice Daily Sun, November 28, 2017:

Last week, Saline County Attorney Tad Eickman obtained an arrest warrant for Trail accusing him of being a felon in possession of a firearm between Sept. 1, 2017, and Nov. 20, 2017, according to court records. The warrant includes a habitual criminal charge because Trail has previous felony convictions in Nebraska for forgery and issuing bad checks.

Sorry, I still haven't figured out bold-ing the quotes I'm referencing so hope this doesn't sound rambley!

If you were planning to rob your date and had used an alias etc. to set her up for this, I just do not see you taking her to your own address to do so. It's too big a risk.

Also, your theory on the beginnings of the police investigation seem quite well thought out, I found it interesting as I must admit it is something I took for granted and never really thought about the details of before.
I had a couple of questions though...
If as you speculate LE discovered the POI by following the Tinder account, why would they go to AT at all? Surely this would have led them to BB alone, and certainly not to ATs ex.

Sorry, falling asleep as I type and can't get thoughts in one place, hope this makes sense. I will add to it tomorrow. [emoji42]

Not rambley, and good question.

This is all speculation and opinion, but logical nonetheless:

LE tracked BB to her address. They didn't find her there (she hasn't been there since they left town in all likelihood). I'm sure detectives asked around and got a bead on AT. These two may not be known around town, but the folks where they live knew who they were. Searching for AT most assuredly led to his ex.

Hi, everyone! First post here, but haven't seen anyone mention this.

AT and BB were renting the basement of some guy's house. When you look at it on Google street view, you can see it's a pretty good sized house with a basketball hoop and whatnot. So people (probably an entire family) live right upstairs. This would've made it REALLY difficult for them to kill her at the house and then haul her body out to the car. Obviously not impossible, but it leads me to think she probably didn't die there. Also, the police said the last SIGHTING of her was in Wilber. I've always wondered if the homeowners were the ones who saw her. After all, they were probably some of the first people to police spoke with.

Also, I originally thought trafficking, but I don't think they would've taken her down to Wilber, to the basement of someone else's house, to traffic her when they easily could've passed her off somewhere closer to the interstate.

Anyway, my theory is that AT and BB found her on Tinder and set up the first date to get a feel for how... agreeable... she might be (I'm thinking the motive is sexual). Since they drove around smoking weed and SL liked BB, they thought they'd go for it. Then on the second date it was easy for BB to say "Hey, let's go back to my place. I've got some great stuff there that I didn't want to drive around with". SL agrees and they go there and surprise, AT is there. They all get high together, maybe slip something else to SL, expecting her to participate in... other activities. She refuses and says something that makes AT feel like she might get him in trouble. They tell her they'll take her home (either both or just AT), get her in the car, drive outside of the city, and AT attacks her and kills her (I believe I read that her phone last pinged just west of Wilber... this would be the time he deactivated the phone). They/he continue driving and get rid of the body.

I don't think they intended to murder her when they took her to Wilber. I mean, her phone was there, people saw her there... it's too obvious. Also, in regards to the body not being intact... that's definitely the rumor going around from people in the area (I'm in NE, too). If that is the case, I think that the idea that BB acted alone is definitely out. But I don't think she did anyway. I think it was AT's idea and BB was just willing to go along with whatever he wanted.

To your last point: FWIW - not once has LE used the term "remains". They have consistently referenced a body being recovered...

My .02...

I think the casino pic's came out before the videos. I think LE were tracking them via their "digital footprints".

Good point! The media have used the term, but LE has not.

One other interesting point is that LE said that AT and BB were "two of the last people" with SL, and not that they were "THE TWO last people" with her.
