Very discouraging nationwide report:
A new government report projects covid-19 cases will surge to about 200,000 per day by June 1, a staggering jump that would be accompanied by more than 3,000 deaths each day.

NV Updated May 4, 2020 6:04p ET
5649 cases (1375 more than yesterday)
263 deaths (46 more than yesterday)

Clark County (Las Vegas)
4411 cases
223 deaths

Having 1375 new cases and 46 more deaths in one day is not a declining curve.

This is alarming, especially with the fervor to remove the restrictions starting to get a lot of noise.

Unemployment insurance in Nevada continues to escalate. They still don't have people paid from March claims, and now, they have to start taking claims from people who are self employed.

Sisolak: Pandemic’s pain is only starting for Nevadans, state

This is grim. More about what it doesn't say. More people are going to lose their jobs. This looks like an endless stream of dispair.

Las Vegas is all about people traveling, going to conventions, conferences, business events, vacations. I don't see that happening in the near future, or maybe even in the Fall. This is going to hit Nevada like a ton of bricks.

And my Mom finally got paid on Nevada Unemployment Insurance. It was all thanks to the UI Nevada Facebook group.

One of the admin, I contacted him, he saw that it was literally just a glitch. Fixed. Done.

Great!

Ask him if he wants to come to Florida?

Yeah, 63,000 people received notifications from MGM in Las Vegas that they were laid off. They get their Healthcare paid until end of August.

Document: MGM Resorts furloughs could turn into layoffs Aug. 31

This pandemic is killing off Las Vegas. Literally. Figuratively.

A legal notice sent to many employees Tuesday, obtained by the Review-Journal, is another indication that Las Vegas resort operators are preparing for a significant drop in tourism once the state allows them to reopen. All Nevada casinos have been closed for more than a month because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The notice, which also announced the extension of affected MGM employees’ health benefits from June 30 to Aug. 31, said layoffs may last more than six months or become permanent.
......
During an earnings call last week, Hornbuckle said the company has furloughed nearly 63,000 workers. According to company regulatory filings, MGM had roughly 70,000 full-time and part-time domestic employees as of Dec. 31.

An accompanying letter signed by President and Acting CEO Bill Hornbuckle said executives “just don’t know how many employees will return to work within the coming months” as travel demand is expected to be “significantly decreased” for the remainder of the year.
......
Employees will remain on furlough status until Aug. 31, then MGM would be allowed to permanently separate them from the company.

Former MGM employee Joseph Guerrero said the news was upsetting. At this point, he believes his best alternative is to search for work in other states.
......
Recent reports back this up. An ongoing study from the University of Florida shows roughly 37 percent of those surveyed in mid-April said they don’t want to rebook canceled trips until two to six months after the virus is contained. Only 6 percent would be comfortable rebooking within a week after the virus is contained.

I don't see any way for Las Vegas to come back from this, for quite awhile.

The entire economy is built upon travel, entertainment, crowds, disposable income. My daughter's friend was planning a wedding in Vegas for September. They changed their location to San Diego, and plan to have most of the gatherings to be outdoors.

None of them wanted to go near Las Vegas, sadly enough. It is hard to imagine going into a casino or a nightclub or dinner show right now. And who has extra money and a stable job right now?

I don't know. Even people who thought that their jobs were rock solid are going to feel this...I see this can float a bit, a few months. And then, the economy is really going to see the full scope of this. If it even takes that long.

2nd wave of pandemic? How about 2nd wave of job cuts?

Talked with a MN state legislator a few days ago. Prediction is about 1/3 of restaurants aren't going to make it. And, that's just regular restaurants not casinos or nightclubs. I just cannot see a return, especially since a second wave is expected.
