"UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. Security Council on Friday expressed outrage at the abduction of hundreds of Nigerian school girls in two attacks by Islamist militants, demanding their immediate release and threatening to take action against the insurgents.

Boko Haram kidnapped more than 250 girls from a secondary school in Chibok in remote northeastern Nigeria on April 14 and has threatened to sell them into slavery, prompting a U.N. warning that the perpetrators would be liable for war crimes."

The Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram were held in the same spot near their school for 11 days without the authorities intervening, relatives claimed on Sunday.

In the latest attack on the Nigerian authorities' handling of the crisis, it was alleged that the girls languished in a camp just 20 miles from the north-east town of Chibok where they were abducted last month.

The Reverend Enoch Mark, whose two daughters were among those kidnapped, said the military had missed a crucial chance to rescue the girls.

"For a good 11 days, our daughters were sitting in one place," he told The Associated Press. "They camped them near Chibok, not more than 30 kilometres, and no help in hand."

Nigerian student tells of kidnap ordeal after escaping Boko Haram captors

One of the teenagers who escaped from Islamic extremists who abducted more than 300 female students said the kidnapping was too terrifying for words and she was too scared to back to school.
Science student Sarah Lawan, 19, told the Associated Press on Sunday that more of the girls and young women could have escaped but they were frightened by their captors' threats to shoot them.

"I am pained that others could not summon the courage to run away with me," she said. "Now I cry each time I come across their parents and see how they weep when they see me."
Police say 53 students escaped and captors were threatening to sell those still held into slavery.

This could be the fate awaiting these girls if they are not located soon.

"REAL MEN DO NOT BUY GIRLS" (or sell them imo)

Funding, weak legislation and poor law enforcement are some of the issues hindering the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria.

A new report by the United States Department of State revealed that while the Nigerian government has made efforts in eliminating trafficking in persons, there were a number of standards yet to be complied with.
The report says "In 2012, a total number of 60 girls aged 16-25 were rescued from slave masters in Ghana and Ivory Coast. While in 2011, 104 Nigerian girls used as sex slaves were evacuated from Mali where they were paid as little as 500 CFAs, that's N150 for sex".
In the just released 2013 US Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report, Nigeria remained in tier 2 status because the "government of Nigeria does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking".

Reports are trickling out about the movement of the girls.

About 50 girls are said to have been seen by villagers on April 30th under heavy guard in Northern Central Africa.

An online report by a French news medium, Jeune Afrique, on Friday, said villagers saw about 50 young women led by armed men in the North Central African Republic last week.

“According to our source, the convoy of two trucks and a pickup was previously seen at Tiroungoulou (about 170 kilometres southwest of Birao) and perhaps Chad.

“The group reportedly left the scene on the night of Sunday to Monday, May 4 to 5, without a trace,” the report said.

"President Jonathan welcomed the offer by Mr Netanyahu to send a team of Israeli counter-terrorism experts to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operations," it said.

"The president briefed Mr Netanyahu on actions already being taken by Nigeria's armed forces and security agencies to locate and rescue the girls, saying that Nigeria would be pleased to have Israel's globally acknowledged anti-terrorism expertise deployed to support its ongoing operations."

"The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said it was "wonderful" there was a global campaign to support the girls.

Speaking to The World This Weekend on BBC Radio 4, the leader of the Anglican Church said the girls were at "colossal risk" from the extremists holding them.

"They are in the hands of a very disparate group which is extremely irrational and difficult to deal with and utterly merciless in the example it has shown in the past," Archbishop Welby said.

During Sunday's programme, Amanpour told Marr about the social media drive, saying: "On the one hand, the hashtag is great because it mobilises people.

"On the other hand, I'm a tiny bit concerned it's a big bubble that then collapses with nothing really being done."

However she said Nigeria was "100% saturated with social media" and that "this (campaign) is really getting to the people in Nigeria"

"(CNN) -- A Boko Haram video emerged Monday purportedly showing some of the kidnapped Nigerian girls in Muslim headdresses and the terror group's leader declaring they have converted to Islam.

The video, released by French news agency Agence France-Presse, was shot in a nondescript bush area and showed about 100 girls.

In the 27-minute footage, the terror group's leader, Abubakar Shekau, says he is willing to exchange the schoolgirls for Boko Haram prisoners.

It shows girls dressed in black and gray hijabs, and reciting the Quran as they make Islamic declarations of faith. Shekau appears in a separate part of the video, but never with the girls.

"Praise be to Allah, the lord of the world," the girls in the video chant".

According to Amnesty International, Nigerian authorities were warned beforehand of the kidnap and did not stop it:

Over 240 schoolgirls are still missing, weeks after they were abducted from their school by armed militant group Boko Haram.

We now know that Nigerian security forces had more than four hours warning, but did not do enough to stop their abduction. Urge the Nigerian government to do all they can to find the girls.

It sounds as though negotiations with the militants may begin. And I guess that could mean a potential trade of girls for the release of imprisoned militants.

Isn't it US policy that there is NO negotiation with terrorists?
Negotiation pulls the terrorists up to the same level of importance as real nation states.
Do you think that US advisors will be more or less invisible so there isn't the slightest appearance that they are involved in any negotiations?

I feel so badly for those girls and their parents. It surprises me that there isn't more coverage, although, I guess that's good in a way--the media are not giving any more publicity to the terrorists. Maybe more is happening on SM in terms of discussion.

Your guess is as good as mine what happens after this. I hope the terrorist don't do what I think they might.

Nigeria rejects swap of Boko Haram prisoners for schoolgirls: UK official

(Reuters) - Nigeria's president has rejected an offer from Islamist rebel group Boko Haram to exchange schoolgirls it abducted for imprisoned militants, but the government is open to broader talks with the rebels, a visiting British minister said.

I hate to say it, but it sounds as though the combined forces may just aim for the best result that can be achieved, but it won’t be perfect.
Unless they can somehow convince a bunch of hyped-up militants that this isn’t going to be pretty.

I imagine that the clock is ticking away for these girls.
With over 4,000 Boko Haram members in detention. Nigeria would be crazy to let them go.
