New Jersey Supreme Court won't hear appeal by Sarah Stern's killer Liam McAtasney

The Neptune City man serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2016 murder of childhood friend Sarah Stern has lost his bid to have the state's highest court hear an appeal of his case.

The New Jersey Supreme Court on May 4 issued a one-page order declining to hear an appeal by 25-year-old Liam McAtasney of his 2019 conviction and life term in the murder of the 19-year-old Neptune City woman.

The high court's order brings to an end McAtasney's direct appeals process in the shocking case that riveted the Shore area and beyond. It means a February decision by the Appellate Division of Superior Court upholding McAtasney's conviction and sentence will stand.

The three-judge appeals panel in February issued a 63-page opinion in which it declined to overturn McAtasney's convictions for murder, felony murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, desecration of human remains, tampering with evidence and hindering apprehension.
