N.j. Slain-baby Case Stymies Police

By John Jennings, Inquirer Staff Writer
POSTED: December 13, 1986

Gloucester County investigators so far have been stymied in their efforts to find the mother of the slain newborn girl whose body was found Dec. 4 in a Washington Township dumpster.

The investigation has taken police to Philadelphia and several South Jersey counties.

Investigators continue to hope that an unusual beach towel in which the infant was wrapped may lead them to the mother. The towel has a white background and a depiction of a leopard sitting between two trees.

Lt. Norman Reese of the Gloucester County prosecutor's office and Detective Tony Garczynski of the Washington Township Police Department are heading the investigation.

Reese said investigators had checked out a few tips of women who had been pregnant around the time the dead baby was found in a silver-colored plastic bag behind Paisano's Restaurant in the Towne Center Shopping Center on Black Horse Pike.

Roselvr, I just noticed I posted the same article as you. I'm sorry. Did you notice it said dumpster? I realize there would be numerous fingerprints on a dumpster...but...I wonder if this particular dumpster had an actual lid that you'd have to lift up. If so, I wonder if investigators did in fact take fingerprints of the lid.

According to the county page you linked to; it's considered Turnersville. It could be anywhere up the pike. Not sure how long Linda has been down here. I'm not recalling any Towne Plaza's. There are so many strip malls; so much traffic on the Black horse pike that I don't really look around lol
Google map Turnersville Mazda to Turnersville Sunoco. Can actually go to the right of Mazda; to the intersection. After that it is Williamstown.

She was probably wearing gloves when she left the baby

Re: the question of race and brown eyes: any number of Caucasian ethnicities have darker complexions, from Spaniards and Italians to Greeks, central Europeans, dark Celts, etc. etc. etc.

For those researching - Vorhees, Turnersville, Blackwood are all also sometimes used as Washington Twp for addresses.

Priscilla Towne Center? Vorhees Towne Center? No idea, just wondering... Is the Vorhees Towne Center where Echelon Mall used to be?
Turnersville is part of Washington Township, Blackwood is not but we share the same zip code. Voorhees is not part of Washington Township or Turnersville and is about 10 miles away. I remember the baby being found that day, it was so sad and shocking, I had a seventeen month old and was 8 months pregnant with my second. I never ever saw these pictures!! Honestly I am picking myself up off the floor after looking at the mother and child.
The shopping center is on The Black Horse Pike, three lights up from Rt. 42, the post office used to be part of that shopping center, today there is a Billows lightning store, Fantasy Gifts, Olde Towne Music and a few other shops

In my memory the dumpster had a lid, I'm pretty sure I am remembering it correctly since lids were required and I'd be surprised if that pizzeria was noncompliant.

A few reasons the investigation branched to other counties and Philadelphia is because there is a motel up on the corner right before the shopping center, the dumpster was a mere stones throw from the rooms. The pizza place was the second or third store in the strip stores. Today a detached Hollywood Tans starts the strip which
was a bank at the time. That's traveling east on the Black Horse Pike where the stores are on the right hand side.

It's right past Gantown Road on the right and before Johnson on the left. I've lived here since I was 4. I went there that day.

For the record, about half of all white infants are born with blue eyes that may darken. The others are born with different colors, some which may also darken. (Hair can lighten after birth, but eyes are usually only going to get darker.
There's a six month period where they can do so.)

I'll have to look in my daughters baby book to see what color her eyes were when born. They are a deep, deep brown now. From memory, I do not remember them being brown but a different shade of blue then my son's. My grandson who's mixed had brown eyes when born

My daughter's were definitely brown, and still are. She's mostly Czechoslovakian and British Isles ancestry.

This baby would of been 30 today <3 As am I this month so this makes me sad thinking how many years this mother has carried this for.

My brother and I are white British and was also born with brown eyes.

I know it’s a long shot but could this baby have been the child of a missing teenager or child, perhaps a runaway?

this story is heartbreaking. is there DNA? i would love to see them try a genealogy search. i have a feeling that's the only way we'll ever know who she was.

it reminds me a lot of a girl i went to college with who was in serious denial that she was pregnant. family and friends blatantly asked her if she was pregnant multiple times and she said no. it ultimately ended the same way as this story. the baby was born in the dorm shower and then thrown in the trash can for the custodian to find. i will never forget waking up to cop cars everywhere while they tried to sort that out.

as a younger person, i remember thinking she was a monster. the older i've gotten, now a mother myself, i have to believe that she truly was battling some serious mental health issues. it's still horrible and wrong and tragic, but i don't believe that 99.9% of women would knowingly carry a baby to term and then just toss it in the trash for fun. she either felt she had no other option, wasn't given any other option (by a 3rd party who was in control) or had serious psychological problems that negated any ability to make a rational choice at all.
