Parents arrested after 1-year-old girl’s body found buried in NM backyard

Police say Romero admitted Anastazia was dead. She told officers she left the little girl and her 2-year-old child “in the bathtub full of water unsupervised,” according to the complaint. She said she later found Anastazia unresponsive.

Police say more than an hour passed, and Anastazia’s mother “never sought help” for her nor called police or medical assistance. Instead, Romero told police Zuber took the little girl’s body and left the apartment. According to the criminal complaint, when Zuber returned, he told Romero “it was taken care of.”

In court Saturday, the state asked that Romero be held in custody until her trial. A ruling has yet to be reached on the request.

Zuber has not yet appeared in court.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Judge Daniel Gallegos denied prosecutors' request to keep the mother of a 1-year-old girl, who police say was left in a bathtub to drown and then buried in a yard, behind bars.

In court Wednesday, Monique Romero showed no emotion as prosecutors detailed the crime she's accused of committing.

Father accused in death of 1-year-old daughter released from custody

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The father accused in the death of his 1-year-old daughter has been granted release on his own recognizance with pre-trial services.

Judge Charles Brown denied the prosecution's request for the pre-trial detention of David Zuber. Zuber has been charged with child abuse and tampering with evidence in the death of his daughter Anastazia.

Despite the testimony from the officer and the prosecution's assertions that Zuber has a history of drug use and failing to appear in court, the judge refused to hold Zuber in jail pending trial.

"There's nothing in there that shows he intentionally caused the death of his daughter," Judge Charles Brown said.

Romero was released from custody on Wednesday.

I think New Mexico changed it's bail process. It's supposed to be based on something other than who can afford to pay. I get that BUT I thought there was no release for this type of case. I don't fully understand it.

Judge Charles Brown denied a motion to keep Zuber and Romero behind bars until trial and they were released.

Now, charges against them have been dropped until prosecutors get the results of the report by the medical investigator. Then those charges can be refiled.
