scarpetta, Astronomy magaine has a section where they answer questions such as yours--Its called Ask Astro--The editors and experts from around the world answer people's questions about the cosmos

Here's something on dark matter: Dark matter is hypothetical matter of unknown composition that does not emit or reflect enough radiation to be observed directly(perhaps invisible gases) but its presence can be inferred from gravitational effects on visible matter(galaxies)--dark matter accounts for the vast majority of mass in the universe--could be invisible gases, neutrinos, or other things

[FONT=arial, helvetica, geneva][SIZE=-1]View the Milky Way at 10 million light years from the Earth. Then move through space towards the Earth in successive orders of magnitude until you reach a tall oak tree just outside the buildings of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida. After that, begin to move from the actual size of a leaf into a microscopic world that reveals leaf cell walls, the cell nucleus, chromatin, DNA and finally, into the subatomic universe of electrons and protons.

A View of the Galaxies

The Ultra Deep Field obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope is the deepest view into the sky by humankind to date. This image combines 800 frames with a total exposure time of 1 million seconds. The 10.000 galaxies that are visible have distances out to times where the universe was just 800 million years old, one seventeenth of its current age.

Loved reading this thread... part of my life revolves around astronomy, so I find it cool that my fellow sleuthers are in the know. :D

2. What shape is the universe? (Flat, round, etc.)

hey Scarpetta...first off let me say this is a wonderful thread you have started here, science is the most awesome subject as there are neverending things about our world that we can explore...anyhow I borrowed my daughters 8th grade AP Science Book and got to reading (good grief how things have changed since I was in school) there are web addresses for all of the chapters and subjects contained in them..for this one they have a page that is really informative and here is the link..
You do have to register at this site though, but it is worth it.

1. Are all the elements in the universe, not just the earth, listed on the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (Mendeleev Periodic Table)?

There are elements that we do not even know exists yet..therefore it is a fact that the universe is comprised of the elements on Mandeleeves table and there is a reason that he left blank boxes on the table for future research..here is a great site that answers alot of questions, courtesy of an 8th grade AP Science Book..

I am a science and math freak.
Thanks for the resources.
