A jury convicted him of several crimes on December 17th but he wasn't there to hear the verdict. I think it's safe to assume he knew what the result was going to be.

Correct and the reason for their concern was that they thought he had a gun while advancing toward them. So it wasn't so much the advancing but the fear of the "weapon" IMO

The advancing towards them part is a display of aggression. I don't think that Childress wanted to give them a hug or a kiss on the cheek.

Put that with the possibility of a weapon you get a justified police shooting. JMO

Because he was an idiot, IMO. Whatever his reason, it was a dumb choice.

Hopefully, the family and friends of this criminal will figure that out.

They have a right to mourn him and make decisions about his final disposition, and even ask for donations to bury him (they have started an online fund). I'm ok with all that. But they need to come to some kind of realizations that his own actions, at every step of the judicial and LE process, determined the outcome for him. This is just not even close to a case of police brutality, or bad decisions by LE, IMO.

I hope this case has moved off the news and social media in another few days or a week. It's not the kind of case that should be a "cause" or example for anything except how NOT to behave when being arrested for resisting arrest for fleeing prosecution and sentencing for violent crimes.

According to Maricopa County Superior Court records, a jury convicted Childress on December 17 of burglary, armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault and theft.

You personally are allowed to walk toward LE. But then again, I doubt you are jumping bail on Home Invasion Armed Robbery charges and fleeing arrest.

If you were, and the cops chased you across state lines, and told you at gunpoint, to FREEZE, you would have the choice of doing so. It you chose not to, and walked towards them, hiding something in your hand with your arm, and kept refusing their commands to FREEZE…then you might be shot. And it would be entirely your decision.

Just like it was his decision to do a long series of violent crimes over the years. And to jump bail. And run from the Marshals when they came with the arrest warrant. Those are all decisions that the victim made willfully.

Honest question. What would we have them do? Wait to see if he's gonna shoot tthem? I am shocked I don't have a serious brain injury from all the head banging annd face palming I do. What is so difficult about following rules and commands? We learn this at a very early age.

I am sure it is tough. But he didn't give them a choice. I am sure they are confident in that part of it.

And you are correct, it was that officers split second choice to decide he had a weapon and take down the threat. But it was years of very bad choices on the victims part to bring them both to this point.

So I look at the officers decision, with his prior decisions as a backdrop. His decision to not have a criminal record so he could attend the academy, his decision to work the streets every day, to be held accountable in those decisions and interactions, and I compare/contrast to the victims recent decisions. And it leads me to believe that the officer will be able to live with his decision. He went there that day to serve an arrest warrant and apprehend a fleeing, violent felon. It was not his mistake, it was the victims PURPOSEFUL action, to hide the cell, that led to his death.

I'm glad that these officers are here to protect us from these miscreants.

Sometimes they have no choice but to have bad endings in order to protect us. It's the nature of their job I suppose.

Did they misake the cell phone for a gun? Did hey SEE the cell phone and think it was a gun? Or did they see a violent convictteed criminal hiding something in his hand? There's a BIG difference. IMO
