But it is all tied together. It was not like a routine traffic stop where some one was shot because the cop thought a cell phone was a gun. This was a desperate, fleeing felon. That adds a sense of desperation and urgency to the suspects possible actions. the cops are going to be extra cautious because they know how desperate this CONVICTED felon is now. If they arrest him he goes to prison for a long time. So they shot him because given all they knew about him, jumping bail, running across state lines, fleeing the sentencing hearing, they figured it was highly possible he was going to shoot at them if possible. They said FREEZE several times, they asked to see what he was holding, and he refused.
So when you say he was shot 'because they thought he had a weapon', that is not wholly correct. He was shot because of the context of the entire situation. He was shot because they had to track him down after he fled. He was shot because he jumped bail and would not comply with their directives when they caught him. All of that goes in to their feelings that he might be holding a gun. He was not someone they pulled over for speeding and they saw a black object in their hand so they opened fire. There was way more to it that made it 'REASONABLE' that he might have a weapon and want to use it. JMO:moo:
