The two guards who were in the jail unit where Jeffrey Epstein apparently killed himself fell asleep and failed to check on him for about three hours, then falsified records to cover up their mistake, a law enforcement official and a prison official said on Tuesday.

Those disclosures came as the two guards were placed on administrative leave and the warden of the jail, the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, was temporarily reassigned, pending the outcome of the investigation into Mr. Epstein’s death, the Justice Department announced.

The two correctional officers in the special housing unit where Mr. Epstein was held — 9 South — falsely recorded in a log that they had checked on the financier, who was facing sex trafficking charges, every 30 minutes, as was required, the officials said. Such false entries in an official log could constitute a federal crime.

In fact, the guards had been asleep for some or all of the three hours, the officials said.

The attorney general, William P. Barr, on Monday ordered the Justice Department’s inspector general to look into how Mr. Epstein had managed to commit suicide while in custody and why he had been taken off a suicide watch 12 days earlier.

Jeffrey Epstein Death: 2 Guards Fell Asleep, Failed to Do Checks for Hours

Somebody knew these guards regularly sleep for hours on the job

Somebody knew

or maybe Everybody knew

Whether the Somebody was Epstein, or someone else. I'll bet it was common knowledge that our most dangerous criminals are being so shabbily guarded.

It's amazing El Chapo didn't escape about 10 times while held there.

BBM -- That's what I think, too. Someone smuggled secobarbital or pentobarbital to him and he took a lethal dose. BTW, this is quick and relatively painless. What doctors give assisted suicide patients.

Off-topic: Secobarbital was sold as Seconal and in the 50s and 60s; physicians prescribed it as a sleep aid. Now, it is almost impossible to get and it is enormously expensive. Sometimes I think our pharmaceutical industry conducts mass population experiments.

BBM. Barbiturates are still used, btw, for pediatric seizures.

Barbituric acid was first synthesized in 1864 in Germany, and its clinical use (sedation) was discovered in 1903, also in Germany. It became abused after WWII (insurprisingly; there are patterns of postwar drug abuses). But probably, in the case of barbiturates, the real reason for their abuse was absence of true psychiatric medications and certain mood-stabilizing effect of barbiturates. Many celebrities who abused and overused them today would have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and some are known to have had it.

Or they didn't fall asleep at all. Since these were people who didn't normally work there, including one who wasn't even a LEO, seems likely they would have stayed awake.

Even the most jaded observers of the justice system wouldn’t expect that royal treatment would be given to a slimy perv who recruited high-school girls to visit his Palm Beach mansion and give him massages.

Yet, according to records from the jail and sheriff’s department, Epstein enjoyed perks that no other convicted sex criminal would ever have the gall to request.

He took the concept of “work-release” to a whole new level. He was allowed to leave the stockade 12 hours a day, six days a week and, upon his return, stayed in a mostly empty wing of the facility.

For Epstein, jail wasn’t an incarceration so much as an inconvenience. Deputies were given permission to leave his cell unlocked while he was there. He was more of an out-mate than an inmate.

Sometimes he got to watch TV in a room normally reserved for attorneys visiting jailed clients.

During his daily road trips, he was followed by off-duty deputies who were paid $126,000 for their respectful supervision. The officers often wore business suits and addressed him as “Mr. Epstein.”

That’s usually not how cops talk to child molesters, but most child molesters aren’t being driven around by their own personal chauffeurs.

Typically Epstein spent days at an office of the Florida Science Foundation, a nonprofit he founded shortly before his sentencing on the prostitution charges. WPTV reported it was the foundation that paid Epstein’s deputy escorts, who also were supposed to keep written records of who visited him there.

Attorney Bradley Edwards, who represents some of Epstein’s female accusers, said he knows of women who were brought to Epstein for sex while he was away from the stockade during the day. Those claims will be part of the new FDLE investigation.
Hiaasen: Being rich helped Epstein, until it didn't

I have some questions. No doubt, Virginia Roberts/Guiffre is a true victim. She was underage. She was groomed. She was preyed on. Used. Horribly shameful, all these old rich perverts.

But the father...when your underage daughter is flown to France or London on a private jet, don’t you ask yourself questions?

And then, the father said he believed that his daughter was learning how to give massages in Epstein’s estate?

That makes sense. When I met a psychiatrist that worked in Bellevue, I asked what was it like dealing with patient intake. I expected a horror story. But he said that nothing really happened cause the first thing they always did was sedate them.

But, I thought the cameras weren’t working?
My guess is that the cameras showing the area around JE's cell weren't working, but the cameras focused on the officers' station were working. So images of the officers sleeping through their shift are visible for the times they were supposed to check on JE.

It was either the perfect storm of cameras working/not working....or a set up. imo

Going to alert this in case it's not ok to post, but Rusty Shackleford has a new video up with a good view inside the temple. I really want to know the reason they removed the gold dome. Was the reason ever given?

I read the dome was removed within a month of 1 or 2 hurricanes hitting the island in Aug/Sept 2017.

TY! After I posted I was still thinking about it and wondered if hurricanes were the reason. Then my mind wandered into some weird conspiracy reasons so I'm glad to have that settled.:D

An elderly federal judge presiding over a key lawsuit relating to financier pedophile Jeffrey Epstein died Sunday, adding another twist to the drawn-out legal saga and to efforts to unseal still-secret details about the conduct of Epstein, his enablers and one of his accusers.

Manhattan-based U.S. District Court Judge Robert Sweet passed away Sunday at age 96, the court announced. Sweet was appointed by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, confirmed that same year and continued to hear and rule on cases through the last few months.

I'm not seeing a conspiracy with a 96yo dying. I'm assuming his death isn't fishy and was natural.

I'm assuming there are procedures in place to seamlessly assign another judge. He wouldn't be the first working judge to die while overseeing a case and the system should be ready to handle a transfer. imo

He died a few months ago
That was one of the reasons the Maxwell v. Giuffre case was delayed
