Gambino murder sparks Mafia rumor mill: ‘A couple of guys got to get killed now’

Alite said that the fact that Cali was apparently alone and unguarded outside of his Staten Island home was an indication of how much the mob had changed. Gone are the days when regular violence necessitated fortified compounds and armed entourages for its bosses.

DiLeonardo partly credited Cali’s own management style for the recent peace. He said Cali took a foothold in the family in the 1990s due to a power vacuum created when its top figureheads, including Gotti, were imprisoned or dead. Following Gotti’s murder conviction in 1992, DiLeonardo said, “we didn’t have one sanctioned hit,” though “there was a couple of sneak things” resulting in murders without official permission.

Looks like they’re saying lone nut ? no mob ties, just a local crazy guy who wanted to date a relative of the victim.

Sounds odd ..... how did this lone nut think deliberately crashing into Cali’s car would help him get in with him?

Guy damages mob-head’s car enough to knock off license plate.... then asks to date his relative .... apparently doesn’t get the answer he wanted? .... then they shake hands & part peaceably. ??

Hard to imagine Cali shaking hands with some random crazy stranger who’d just hit his car & then asked to date his relative. Cali shaking his hand sounds like he either respected or feared the shooter.

Can you link that? I missed it. Thanks!

Staten Island Man Expected to Be Charged in Killing of Gambino Mob Boss, Police Say

The police took a 24-year-old Staten Island man into custody in connection with the fatal shooting of the reputed boss of the Gambino crime family and expected to charge him with murder, officials said on Saturday.

The motive for the killing was unclear, Dermot F. Shea, the Police Department’s chief of detectives, said at a news conference on Saturday.

“Was he acting alone?” he said. “Was he acting for other people? What was the motive? I simply, standing here in front of you, do not have all the answers.”

He identified the man as Anthony Comello, and multiple sources said he was taken into custody in Brick Township, N.J., on Saturday morning. He was being held in the Ocean County Jail at the request of the New York Police Department, according to a jail official.

After initially speaking with detectives on Saturday morning, Mr. Comello retained a lawyer and has not given a statement since.

Two law enforcement officials said that Mr. Comello had no criminal history but had nonetheless come to the attention of law enforcement before.

Sometime in recent years, his strange behavior in a federal courthouse was such that the United States Marshals Service briefly took him into custody and asked the New York Police Department’s Intelligence Division to check its records to determine if he had any history of terroristic threats. Neither of the officials had any details about the specific nature of his behavior, but both said no such history could be found.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot F. Shea said Saturday that Comello had multiple residences, including one in Staten Island. He also said that Comello had "crossed paths" with New York police multiple times — including receiving a parking summons the day of the murder.

Man in Custody Connection With Mob Boss Killing: NYPD

Anthony Camello, 24, of Staten Island, was taken into custody in New Jersey, police said. Investigators anticipate returning him to Staten Island where he will face murder charges for Cali, said Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

"While we believe we have the shooter in custody in this incident, the investigation is far from over," Shea said.

Police are investigating whether other people were involved and a possible motive, Shea said. He said police have an arrest warrant in hand from the Richmond County district attorney's office.

The weapon hasn't been recovered, Shea said.

Camello was picked up at a home in Brick, New Jersey, by the U.S. Marshals, sources familiar with the investigation said. His pickup truck was found on Staten Island and cell phone records may have helped lead police to Brick.

The sources said the murder wasn't related to the mob. One source described the man in custody as a “conspiracy theory type” of guy while a second source said he appears “a bit off.”

Neighbors call man arrested in connection with mob boss Francesco Cali murder a ‘good kid,’ ‘nice guy’

He was apprehended in New Jersey and taken into custody early Saturday morning by detectives, according to Dermot Shea, NYPD chief of detectives.

Of how Comello was apprehended by police, a source said: “The truck is fairly distinctive." Authorities were able to identify the vehicle and suspect from surveillance footage taken from Cali’s home and, due to “a lot of investigative work,” traced him to New Jersey.

According to his Facebook page, Comello is a graduate of Tottenville High School.

Neighbors of the quiet Eltingville street where Comello is said to reside called him a “good kid,” and “nice guy.”

“It’s a quiet neighborhood. I only spoke with him in passing when we stopped to say hello,” said Victor Ujeck, a neighbor of Comello. “I was shocked; I never would have expected him to have done this. He’s a nice guy, always asking how’s the family?”

Another neighbor, who requested anonymity, said he’s known Comello his whole life.

“He was a good kid; he used to play basketball at the school playground around the block,” he said.

“Law-enforcement authorities anticipate a possible assassination attempt against the Staten Island man suspected of gunning down mob boss Francesco “Franky Boy” Cali, sources told The Post on Sunday.”

“Officials haven’t confirmed that the Gambino crime family has posted a bounty on Anthony Comello, but “the general feeling is that there’s an ‘X’ on this guy’s back,” one source said.”

“He’s going to have some issues in jail,” a high-ranking NYPD official said.”

“Maybe there’s some guys who are wiseguys in jail who will show their allegiance to the Gambinos and say, ‘We’ll take care of this guy.”

He did it for personal reasons, not street reasons.......

Said Junior: “Today, an arrest was made. A 24-year-old individual who did it for personal reasons, not street reasons. Is somebody going to apologize to Gene and his family?”

He added: “What troubles me to the core is the simple fact that for two days the Gotti name has been put into the press for these negative reasons and it’s been done because it could be done. It’s easy…

“It bothers me because (Gene’s) family was so excited to come home … And to come home and deal with this nonsense … Geno never complained. He’s cut from his brother’s (John Gotti) cloth.”

Junior, who between 2004 and 2009 was a defendant in four racketeering trials which all ended in mistrials, said newspaper sales spike “8 to 12 percent when there’s a Gotti on the front page.”

Junior said that if it wasn’t for surveillance cameras, “law enforcement would have gotten a government cooperator or cooperators to corroborate their theory and Gene Gotti and others would have been charged for that murder (Cali) within a year.”

Anthony Comello Says He Shot Gambino Leader Because He Feared for His Life

At an initial court appearance on Monday afternoon in Ocean County, N.J., Mr. Comello held up a palm on which he had scribbled “United We Stand,” and “M.A.G.A. forever,” as well as a circle and “U.S.A.”

During the 15-minute hearing, Mr. Comello smiled several times and seemed calm as he signed papers waiving his right to an extradition hearing “without reference to guilt or innocence.” Ocean County prosecutors said he would be transferred to New York within 10 days.
