Interesting article about today's diggers....

Our contemporary veterans are fiercely proud of their service but doubt that most Australians understand them and what they have been through. Regardless, and above all, they want us to care - and not just on Anzac Day.

Who can blame them? They've risked everything for their nation. Now it's up to us.

The service for Paul will be held tomorrow - it will be a military funeral although kept simple according to family wishes. The Pall bearers are mainly from Paul's regiment.

Thank-you for your good wishes.

The McKay family are in my thoughts and prayers. Thankyou for keeping us informed, sad person.

Thinking of Paul’s family this morning.

For me, it is time to take a minute and pause to remember Paul and all the diggers who so bravely face adversity, and stand tall to retain our freedoms. Bless them all.

Rest peacefully Paul, you are home.

I had a feeling that his photo would raise an eyebrow or two from the ladies here. I hope if I ever go missing, my photo does too...yeah right. ;)

That's a good question as to who reported him missing. I'm curious as to the circumstances for him even being here in the US. Strange. If I had to guess, I think he may have had one too many drinks, went outside, and maybe exposure got to him. I hope I'm wrong though.

From a Lady who knows, trust me, it will!! :loveyou: :blushing:

May this guy R.I.P

THE tiny American town near where Adelaide-born war veteran Captain Paul McKay spent his last days will mark Anzac Day in his honour, after his death “profoundly affected” the community.

In a simple but poignant tribute, Saranac Lake’s mayor will lead a hike to Scarface Mountain early on Anzac Day to lay a single poppy at the place where Capt McKay’s body was found in January , on a rocky outcrop near the summit.

A UNITED STATES town that became the scene of a frantic winter search for a missing Australian soldier is set to mark Anzac Day for the first time as a special honour to Canberran Captain Paul McKay.

Captain McKay's parents, Angela and John McKay, will also make a pilgrimage to place their son's ashes on the mountain in upstate New York where his body was found in freezing conditions in January.

The trip, planned for May, will be the couple's first to the US since they raised the alarm about the missing Afghanistan veteran on January 3.

On Jan. 23, some local people gathered to formally send McKay's body on its way from the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake to Queens, from which it was flown to Australia for a funeral.

Now John and Angela McKay plan to return here in May to scatter his ashes where he died. Their daughter will accompany them, Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau said.

"We hope to put a couple of seats on the hike up Scarface Mountain in memory of Paul and scatter his ashes where he was found," Angela McKay said in a Facebook message to the Canberra Times, an Australian newspaper, which reported it Sunday.

Thank you, enzeder, for all this information about Paul ... and the wonderful community in Saranac Lake. Remembering Paul on ANZAC Day is such an honour for them to extend to Paul and his family and fellow diggers. Paul has touched so many hearts.

Will be driving through SL and TL today. Paul and Colin are on my mind.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

Gratitude for McKay search
To the editor: I would appreciate it if you would allow me to convey my thanks and gratitude to all personnel involved in the recent search for Capt. Paul McKay, sadly found deceased on Scarface Mountain by a New York forest ranger. As a former member of the Australia Army and a Vietnam veteran, I am very much aware of the close links between both our nations and their respective military forces. That the search was conducted in extremely adverse climatic conditions and on rugged terrain. ..........
