OH OH - ANTHONY SOWELL, 11 bodies unearthed at his Cleveland home, 2007-09 *dies in prison 2021*

I wonder if there really are more bodies or if the stench invades the soil and walls of the home etc. I'm curious if they found anything last night.

I personally feel that Sowell had many more victims than the eleven that were already found in his home. There's the interview earlier in the case, with a neighbor businessman who said that for the past two years Sowell had been placing duct tape sealed plastic bags in their dumpster and the bags reeked. They smelled so bad that he asked an employee to pour bleach in the dumpster and they'd close the lid.

I had read earlier that the stench returned when they started to remove debris from the back yard of the house next door. I also believe that victims went into those dumpsters. That would be a quick way to get rid of bodies. The sausage shop dumpster was right next to his house! This guy said that he lost count. I don't think that 11 would be easy to lose track of. Not when you are talking about something as significant as killing someone.

There was an article about mothers being convinced that AS was taking down their missing person posters...

From the above article:

"Police said Oct. 30 that the victim, a 40-year-old Cleveland woman, did not want to talk to detectives and that's why no charges were filed against Sowell. But Cleveland Prosecutor Victor Perez offered a different explanation Thursday, saying charges were not filed in part because a detective on the case told prosecutors the victim was not credible.

Perez's statement raises questions about how seriously police and prosecutors dealt with women who came forward to accuse Sowell -- now charged with multiple murders -- of attacking them. "

...and how many of Sowell's victims were missing since Dec 08?

SMH

I imagine we're going to see lots of finger pointing and deflection as questions are asked by the public, especially the families and loved ones of all the victims, about why this serial abuser, rapist, and killer was left to wreak so much damage on the women of Cleveland and who knows how many other cities.

It is an outrage, and I pray that every single person with responsible is brought to full accountability.

I'm not sure there's any one to blame for what happened in this case, OTHER than Sowell himself. But there is an URGENT need for LE to change how they handle the 'missing' reports of women who live a life-style on the fringes.

THIS has happened, over and over and over. Women of the night, drug abusers, even homeless women, disappearing in numbers from an area and LE just doesn't put the pieces of the puzzle together that there could possibly be someONE who's making them disappear. These are the PERFECT victims, that's WHY he chose them. No one would miss them or they had a history of disappearing in the past so no one would think anything of it. Serial killers that have been found responsible for this sort of crime, have even admitted that's why they chose the victims they did, because 'no one would care,' or by the time anyone did think something was wrong, it was waaayyy too late and the trail would be cold.

There was the Green River killer, Jeffrey Dahlmer (young men), the case in Albuquerque, down in LA (can't recall the name of the town), an old, unsolved case in Los Angeles,................it just KEEPS happening and LE doesn't get it!

We saw the number of 'missing posters' put up after Sowell was arrested. MyGosh! that many women missing from the same area of town and LE didn't connect it!? I'm not sure they could have connected Sowell, but MOST LIKELY, especially because of the odor coming from his home and his own being as well.

This case SHOULD be a wake up call for LE across the country! Don't wait until it happens in your town,............AFTER there's DOZENS of victims. These women didn't deserve to die. This could have been stopped much sooner.

I haven't seen this video before today...

I like Genevieve Mitchell's words. What a wonderful example she is for the people not only of E. Cleveland, but for everyone. The Carl Stokes Brigade chose a fine spokeswoman to represent them. I hope this community pulls together to work through this and bring about change. Many prayers for all.

Anyone local on this? I was wondering what new developments were. My mom, who is not one to exaggerate said she heard on the radio that the smell had come back "with a vengeance" and they were going to search the house next door! I can't see how you could not know that there was a body in your own home, no matter how much the neighbors house smelled and I have smelled human decomp before. We are in Virginia and are stuck in that big storm with no power and I can only turn the laptop on for short periods to save power so that I can keep checking for my son's school closings so the only thing I have seen is something about checking the neighbors house as a precaution.

TIA!

Hi, Pink. I hope all is well with you in VA.

I'm not a local but I have been following on another thread. It's full of all the information you are looking for(21 pages, so far) and can be found here...

That is such a moving memorial with the gold frames on the pictures.

thanks for the update Stoshie! This should continue to be interesting...

Funerals commemorate two women found at Anthony Sowell's home

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The families of two victims of a suspected serial killer gathered at separate funerals Saturday to remember the lives they cherished before the women disappeared.

Nancy Cobbs and Michelle Mason both loved their families, but their relatives described women with different interests. Cobbs was handy and like doing small jobs around the house. Mason was passionate about traveling and the arts.

Activists call for dedicated missing persons unit; cities that have them caution against high hopes

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Two weeks after the discovery of 10 bodies and a skull in the of suspected serial killer Anthony Sowell, a debate rages over whether Cleveland devotes enough resources to finding missing people.

Local activists have demanded a law enforcement unit devoted solely to handling missing person cases, and city and county officials are exploring the possibility. Last week, Mayor Frank Jackson promised the city will reevaluate its practices after the Sowell investigation is done and make any necessary changes.

Missing person reports show face of Cleveland's lost

One in five of the reports for a missing adult mentions drug use. A third of the adults reported missing had criminal records. All of the women whose bodies were found in Sowell's house met both of these criteria, including 38-year-old Crystal Dozier.

Dozier's mother, 57-year-old Florence Bray of Garfield Heights, talks openly about her daughter's troubles. But she painstakingly drives home the fact that all of the victims were more than their lifestyles.

"If they smoked drugs, if they drank, so what? They're nothing?" Bray asked on a program broadcast by public radio station WCPN. "They had families. My daughter left behind six kids and five grandchildren. She had family, too. She had a mother, she had a brother, she had two other sisters. She had people who loved and cared for her. And she was a loving, caring person herself.

Officials' explanations differ on why Anthony Sowell was freed after '08 arrest; police, prosecutor now say evidence was lacking

Two weeks ago, police said the woman in the 2008 case did not want to cooperate with detectives.

Thursday, City Prosecutor Victor Perez told The Plain Dealer that a detective who presented the case to an assistant city prosecutor said the woman was not credible. The prosecutor then determined there was not enough evidence to file charges.

Friday, The Associated Press reported that Lt. Thomas Stacho, the Cleveland police spokesman, said it was a prosecutor, not the detective, who deemed the woman not credible.

OOPSIE!

Sounds like prosecutor and the police are blaming each other. By the way, since the accused was a convicted felon, and even if they deemed the woman "not credible" one would think the police could have gone to the house and thoroughly investigated it. Presumably they could have uncovered some of the bodies had they done a search of the house. Sounds like they didn't even check that he was a convicted felon.
Sickening.

I hope Cleveland officials take this

to heart and make changes to be sure that they do not let repeat offenders continue on with their heinous brutality.

I have to think that in the background, LE has had more than just the few women we're aware of that escaped from this evil man alive, contacting them.

Good grief! This guy was free for the past four years. How many victims did he have?

Pictures: Who Were the Women Found at Anthony Sowell's House?

Many of his alleged victims had troubled pasts. Others were church-going moms. All had families who loved them and are now mourning their passing. All were poor and black and some families were outraged that police did not do more to find them.

Some women lived near Sowell's home or hung out in his neighborhood. Tishana Culver, a 31-year-old beautician with drug convictions, lived just a few blocks from Sowell's Imperial Avenue home. Crystal Dozier had once lived on Sowell's block. No one reported her missing when she disappeared in 2007. Janice Webb, who often visited the neighborhood, was a 48-year-old mother of one and grandmother of three. She was last seen by her family in June and reported missing two months later.

Investigators Still Combing Through Cleveland House of Horrors

A rape-crisis telephone line has been set up in Cleveland to field calls from any other potential victims of alleged serial killer Anthony Sowell.

The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, which launched the line at 9 a.m. this morning, said it has answered several phone calls on the confidential hotline.

The crisis center's move comes on the heels of Sowell's not guilty plea Friday to a woman's alleged rape that officials were investigating when they happened upon several dead bodies in his three-story, Cleveland home.

In Ohio killings, closure comes with grieving

After months or years of searching, the families of 10 missing women whose bodies were found at the Cleveland home of a registered sex offender are finally able to lay their loved ones to rest.
There have been three funerals, and more are to come this week. The Cuyahoga County coroner's office is still trying to identify the eleventh body found at the home of Anthony Sowell, 50.

Sowell's December 08 victim, who escaped, speaks:

http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/11/cleveland_woman_says_police_fa.html

Poor thing, so very sad. :( Not only was she attacked and traumatized by Sowell, she was re-traumatized by people not believing or helping her.

According to the victim:

"Wade said she shouted to people walking past Sowell's house but they ignored her. Then she ran into a nearby restaurant. They refused to call 9-1-1 and told her there was a payphone outside.

"I just started crying," she said. "I was in this circle screaming that this man attacked me and nobody would hear me."

Wade said when she flagged down the police car a few streets away, the officers acted fast.

"The police at that time took me very seriously. They could tell how upset I was. They even came to the hospital with me and stayed with me the whole time," Wade said. "

Kudos to those street police officers who did come to her aid...
