Agreed. Why wait? And even though the police showed up, all he had to do if he wanted to die was pick up the rifle.

I think he felt justified. And he wanted to see the effects on his wife if what he had done.
This. I will never believe that man was suicidal. That man wants to live and savor the taste of the suffering he's caused and will continue to cause for the mother of those boys.

I saw comparisons to Skelton upthread. Yes, that is the exact feel of this case in my mind. same motivators, same sadistic narcissistic need to control from afar and inflict emotional suffering MOO IMO

He seemed quite focused and oriented to time and space to me. I saw no detachment. Calm. Able to discuss his own discomfort. Reassuring the officers and trying to get the dog in the house so it wouldn’t interfere with the officers.

I don’t know. He seemed confident, justified and alert to me.

And he did not start crying until he was called a coward.

He stood there and listened to the DA talk about how he chased his terrified son into the woods, dragged him back and shot him. He listened to the DA talk about how he was his boys’ world and they trusted him implicitly. He didn’t sob until after he was called a coward.
I agree that he’s focused, oriented, and in no way psychotic. I keep going back to the part of the LE body cam video when he says…”I ain’t mad. I ain’t nothing.” I feel like there’s so much behind that statement about the why and how he feels about doing it. Almost like there’s a sense of relief that he finally did what he had been planning. He also said that he is completely sober. It was odd that he made a bold statement that he’s never used drugs a day in his life but then said well I’ve done drugs but not currently.

Where did you see this information? Was this in the body cam video or the Charging doc?

(Semi O/T) This community has surely suffered. In February of this year...

A mother has been found responsible for shooting her family, killing three of them, before fatally shooting herself at a home in Ohio Township near New Richmond, the Clermont County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office said 46-year-old Theresa Cain fatally shot 50-year-old Steven Cain, 74-year-old William Felton and 13-year-old Ethan Cain. Samantha Cain, a Northern Kentucky University student and Theresa's daughter, was taken to UC Medical Center where she remains in critical condition.

Yes, our community just went through this as well.

Torn between thinking this unspeakable should be psychoanalyzed in the hopes of finding out what makes him 'tick' and preventing the next slaughter ?

But another thought is that since he'd be studied/treated at taxpayer expense while incarcerated --- lock him up and throw away the key and let him think about what he did until the end of his life.
Minimal psychotic treatment, if any.
From what we know, I'm doubting full on insanity or mental illness.
Just plain evil, but he made decisions ahead of time that point to a coherent individual; or at least it appears that way as of now.
Or he can face the state's ultimate penalty ; but sadly that would require the wife at least to attend hearings and ongoing contact.

Save the $$ for ongoing therapy for the wife and the teen daughter and any treatment they may need.
They will most likely suffer from ptsd for the remainder of their days, sadly.
While there may be 'ok' moments and days, life will be very difficult for them both.
M00.

When the Officer asks him "what's going on man"? He says "nothing", then goes on to ask if he can turn over. That would have been his opportunity to say something, anything, about why he did what he did. But he says "nothing"?

I'm just catching up today. When/where did he say something about drugs? Is that new information?

He says something similar two different times. The second time is when he says, “I ain’t mad. I ain’t nothing” at around 1:41 of the body cam footage and talks about being completely sober and not doing drugs at around 35 seconds.

I just watched a great video on YouTube from Annie Elise 10 to LIFE. His neighbor said he was unstable - yelling at the wife and kids. He implied more abuse you could tell he was shook. Apparently there were rumors of an impending divorce. So theory is he killed the kids but not his wife because he knew the worst thing he could do to hurt her was make her watch what he did. Now, with appeals, she will be tied to him for the rest of (at least) his life.

Here is a quick version of what was said between LE and CD..there is a lot going on and people talking/screaming during all of this but I tried to pick out what CD said (mainly). This is from the body cam video that starts with two officers approaching CD on the porch and goes until they start walking him.
I thought it might help some.

2 LE Officers: Stand up. Stand up. Stand up. Stand up now. Stand up. Stand the f### up.
Get your hands…(unintelligible)
The radio is saying that there are those who need attention and if the shooter is not complying then they can shoot him (not exact words)
CD: Man, I ain’t trying to hurt nobody…(unintelligible)...I’m completely sober…Never did drugs a day in my life…well, uh uh I’ve did drugs (unintelligible) but I don’t do drugs now…I’m sober…I’m not trying to fight (I think he said this) you…Gatlin (think that's the correct name for dog), get your butt inside…Gatlin get your butt inside now…Gatlin knock it off…
He’s quiet for a bit (can hear the mother screaming)
LE: What are you doing man?
CD: Can I roll over? I ain’t going to hurt you…I ain’t gonna…I ain’t going to hurt nobody…
LE: You got anything on you?
CD: No, I ain’t got nothing man…a phone, that’s it…I ain’t mad. I ain’t I ain’t nothing…Just make sure that dog don’t come out. I don’t think it will bite you just don’t reach for him and try to grab him and pet him and he won’t bite you.
LE: What’s going on man?
CD: Nothing uh can I stand up…it’s kind of uncomfortable…(as LE is talking)...I ain’t going to do nothing…I ain’t running away…you can do whatever you want with me
LE starts walking him

That poor mama. I can't imagine her pain. The step daughter was so brave to run off for help. I hope they are both surrounded by all the love from their family and friends. And the poor dog too :(

His reaction on the body cam is so off. he seems calm and still trying to keep control of the scene even though he's handcuffed and on the ground (yelling at the dog to get in the house, asking to roll over, etc.) He's a piece of work.
