I think he was known to them in passing like at the DQ and having seen him around town. The other I really don't know. Who knows what goes on in someone's mind when they are not all there mentally. We just know that Sarah was the target since she is the only one that is known to be still alive. He wanted her for his own sick reason and willing to get her at any cost.

i suspect this too. i have lived in small and large towns and i have generally always been able to recognize my neighbors...

Hoffman's mother and stepfather live in the Apple Valley neighborhood, near the home where Herrmann and her two children lived. Sprang lives just around the corner.
Yesterday afternoon, her father told WBNS-TV (Channel 10) that her family still holds out hope.
"If Stephanie can hear us out there, I want her to know, and hopefully she can feel our thoughts, that we will get her back," said Stephen Thompson. "Your mom, me, your whole family- we're all looking for you."
Thompson said that the ordeal since last week has been "beyond comprehension for all of us. We just can't understand."
Several family members expressed frustration at the lack of information available from the sheriff's office, but they declined to speak on the record. Barber said he hadn't heard of any such complaints.
A man who identified himself as Hoffman's stepfather said yesterday that the family is "distraught" and that deputies had told them not to comment publicly on the case. He said his stepson is a bit of a "loner" and hasn't lived with him and his wife at their Apple Valley home for two years.

Are you kidding me? How hard is it to find out where Stephanie's car was parked??

grrr...lol, i agree! im starting to wonder if there is a third (mh's or other) car in this equation that may have been seen in the driveway or garage of tinas home... if her(tinas) truck was in the drive when the cop went on wed. then at some point another car HAD to have been seen in the drive/garage. unless stephanies jeep was frequently seen in the drive prior to wed. and whoever is saying this is remembering incorrectly... if not stephanies jeep, then whos vehicle was there?

if mh had been watching tinas house for any amount of time, maybe he knows where stephanie lives and drove her jeep back to her house after he used it. maybe it was in the drive originally when all of this went down and then he moved it into the garage to put them in there and took them wherever they are and then parked it back at stephanies house, as if she had never been at tinas? then because hes watching the house(tinas wed.eve) he knows that le knows something is up with tinas family mh knows that he needs to ditch tinas truck somewhere so it looks like tina & family drove off in the truck... pretty flimsy i know, but i sorta think he may not have had this part thought out, possibly because he hadnt factored stephanie into the events...she showed up unexpectedly and he had to improvise...

Hoffman was paroled January 10, 2007 and it just ended last month according to this article.

Not sure what they mean by it ended last month? They use the word "parole", and not probation. IIRC - from articles about Hoffman being sentenced in Colorado - he was sentenced to 8 years and then 5 years probation.

Parole and probation are 2 different things, right?

Interview coming up on CBS Early show, with one of the women's father.

Stephanie Sprang's father I believe.

its called parole when you are released from prison, one has to check in with a parole officer and follow certain rules...same concept as probation, but probation can be the actual punishment for an offense committed...so he must have just been released from 5years of parole - or was it 2009???

eta: i see he was released from parole in 2007 ---thanx crocus :)

Parole mentioned here too -

Hoffman was sentenced to eight years in prison in Colorado in 2001 for arson and other charges. Authorities allowed him to move to Ohio in 2007 after he was released on parole, which ended about a month ago. He had paid about $4,800 toward $2.06 million in restitution, Colorado court system spokesman Jon Sarche said.

So - if his parole ended last month - was he then placed on probation? Does he have a probation officer who was keeping track of him?

Davis said she talked to police extensively about her neighbor, and the fact that he used to kill squirrels and eat them. She also believes he killed a couple of dogs. He wasn't always so strange, she said. "He was very nice when we first met him" a year ago, and invited them over for a party at his house, with a couple of kegs. "He started dating my friend and she moved in to his house with her son". Davis said her friend was living with Hoffman up until a month ago, when she ended the relationship and moved out. Hoffman was then apparently very depressed and desperately trying to get the girlfriend to come back. Davis thinks that may have lead to the kidnappings "The young girl looked a lot like my friend. I think that's why he took her".

Okay not to be a party pooper but the article really reads (the short version in my head) He was nice when we met him then we had a party and after a few kegs her friend and him moved into together.

Wonder why that didnt work out.:waitasec:

I'm skeptical since it's from Fox (plus all the other media outlet errors in the reporting of this case).

But we have some amazingly perceptive sleuths here, because at least one poster surmised just this (not just that the breakup with the g/f precipitated MH's actions, but that maybe Sarah resembles the ex g/f).

Trust me when I say that I am not trying to defend the creep, but hunting and eating squirrels is not an odd and uncommon act. Growing up in the south and living around hunters, squirrel hunting was popular... and if you were squirrel hunting, odds were, those squirrels were going to be consumed...

I would bet that they cut a big chunk out of the interveiw because they wanted to just put interesting words in the article.

Eat kill keg date and dog. Talk about keyword hits when it apears on google.

That or the neighbor is dramatic. MOO

The sheriff said they KNEW for a fact that Sarah was in that house. As someone else had mentioned before, it's one thing to tie him to the crime but to KNOW that she was that particular home...? They must have had a tip. It's possible that he contacted the ex-GF and bragged that he had replaced her with a young girl, or maybe even actually told her that he took Sarah as a replacement, etc.

Someone had to have tipped LE off.... (Either a tip, or they started watching him and somehow managed to see her in there...?)

It looks like they are bringing in cadaver dogs to search Foundation Park today. :(
I noticed in yesterday's pressie that Barber seemed to be preparing "us" for the worst. Paraphrasing: "2-pronged approach for the search", "these folks might be dead", "no reason to think that they may be located outside the Knox County area", etc. :(

Since MH wasn't cooperating when arrested, and then subsequently it was reported that he is, it makes me think that perhaps he has confessed to killing them.

Maybe Barber couldn't say more because MH doesn't have a lawyer yet???

Did he refuse a court-appointed lawyer (or was there no opportunity for that until today's bond hearing)? Is he going to be one of those who defends himself?

Doesn't he need to be declared indigent before being assigned an attorney?

Hearing today is scheduled tentatively for 1:30.
