Jury selection began Tuesday for a Weatherford man accused in the 2012 slaying of JaRay Wilson, 16.

Tucker McGee is charged in Custer County with first-degree murder...

According to witness testimony at the preliminary hearing, McGee, 20, had been smoking synthetic marijuana before he pulled a gun from his waistband and shot Wilson in the head along a rural county road. He and a friend hoisted her body over a fence, then returned the next day to bury her in the woods, according to the testimony.

Testimony began Wednesday in the murder trial of Tucker McGee. He’s accused of first-degree murder in the death of 16-year-old Jaray Wilson... Witnesses testified Wilson and McGee knew each other from school.

A friend of Wilson said she’d been getting in trouble with drugs and started hanging out with McGee, who’s now facing a jury for allegedly shooting and killing Wilson...

One of Wilson’s friends testified she was texting him the day she disappeared in October 2012. She told him she was with Tucker McGee and was “sketched out,” and that she couldn’t go home.

McGee sat silent throughout the hearing without any expression, even when prosecutors presented a likely key piece of evidence; text messages between Wilson and her friend Trey John. The messages were dated the day Wilson disappeared.

Wilson's messages were colored in yellow. John's were colored in blue. At one point in their conversation you can see John ask Wilson, "With who?".... Wilson responded, "Cody and Tucker"... Wilson told John she is in the "middle of nowhere" and was "sketched out."

Wilson's family packed in to the courtroom Thursday wearing buttons with the face most only knew from missing persons' billboards. "It's like having her present more. You know she's telling her story today through the trial," Wilson's aunt Ronette Thiessen said.

It's a story prosecutors tried to tell by interviewing an investigator from the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, who pieced together Wilson's last days. Prosecutors also showed video of what appears to be JaRay on her cell phone in front of a convenience store in Hydro. That's before they say she texted a friend saying she was with McGee and Cody Godfrey...

Later Godfrey would cooperate with investigators and, without telling McGee, helped crews find JaRay's body outside Weatherford. That's when he worked with investigators to record calls between himself and McGee. McGee appears to sound panicked and afraid that investigators were closing in and told Godfrey he'd gotten rid of a gun.

I was just thinking about JaRay today. Here's hoping the trial leads to justice.

On the witness stand, an Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics investigator told the courtroom a letter from McGee to his mother was found in a purse in their home.

It starts out by saying, “Mama, I love you with all my heart,” and goes on to say, “I would do anything to go back,” and, “nobody is to blame for this except me”...

Later in the courtroom Wednesday, prosecutors revealed recorded phone conversations. They say the conversations were between Godfrey and McGee. The calls were made in the presence of investigators; in the audio, you can hear Godfrey ask McGee if he got rid of the gun. McGee allegedly replies, “I hid it.”

McGee was the last person seen with Wilson before she disappeared in October 2012. Investigators said an individual gave them information that McGee shot Wilson in a wooded area near Weatherford and hid her body. The person said he and McGee went back the next day and buried her in the same area, but further in the woods.

"I just wanted to scream ‘Yes', but I don't know if it was a relief, but that's the only word I can think of. It did lift a weight off my shoulders," said Jaray's mom, Jara.

It's a weight that Jaray's family has carried for over 14 months. From the day 16-year-old Jaray went missing in October 2012, to the day her remains were found in December 2013, and now in this final chapter.

The trial against McGee included a full week of testimony. The key witnesses for the state was Cody Godfrey. Godfrey admitted he was with McGee and JaRay smoking "K2" on October 14, 2012. He was the first person to come forward after 14 months and admit to investigators he was there when JaRay was shot in the head. Godfrey said he watched through a rear view mirror as McGee fired the shot that he said JaRay "never saw coming."

Daily Oklahoman:

JaRay Wilson's killer was drug abuser, Oklahoma prison records show

---
In a bizarre, handwritten statement, McGee describes a scientific experiment in which monkeys’ brains reacted the same whether they were performing an act or watching the act being performed by another. He related this to humans.

“I read somewhere that children at the age of 15 may have seen over 40,000 deaths, whether it be on TV, movies, video games, etc. You can deduce from the above paragraph what I’m implying or trying to say,” McGee wrote.

Oklahoma's youngest murderers can no longer be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole unless they are found to be "irreparably corrupt and permanently incorrigible."

A divided Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals established the new restrictions in rulings made Friday in two high-profile murder cases.

(...)

In the second case, the appeals court ordered a resentencing for Tucker Ryan McGee, now 22, of Weatherford. He fatally shot JaRay Wilson, 16, of Weatherford, after smoking synthetic marijuana with her in October 2012.

JaRay Wilson's murderer re-sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole
In Oklahoma, judges are unable to sentence minors to life without parole. At the time of Wilson's murder, McGee was 10 days from turning 18. Because he wasn't 18 at the time of the murder, McGee's sentencing got overturned, leading to Monday's decision. McGee will not be eligible for parole for 38 years.

Oklahoma father upset about re-sentencing for daughter’s killer
"He’s got a new break every time you turn around, and my daughter - she didn’t get that opportunity," Rodney said. "She is sitting out here in a box... That’s not right."

"He don’t have no remorse whatsoever... He don’t care what he has done... It don’t register," Rodney said. "He planned out what he was going to do, he carried out what he was going to do and then he kept it quiet for 14 months without batting an eye."
