On Thursday August 20th Ava Carey, age 16, left her home in northeast Corvallis to go to a nearby park. She did not return when expected. Ava’s family reported her as missing to the Corvallis Police Department that night, expressing their amplified concern because Ava is a special needs child.

The Corvallis Police Department shares the Carey family’s concern and continues to work day and night to find Ava Carey. Officers have searched the area with the assistance of the Corvallis Police K9, continue to canvass surrounding neighborhoods and engaged the community in an effort to locate her. We have also been in communication with other law enforcement agencies and community partners to ask for their help in finding Ava. We are grateful to the community volunteers who have come out to help search for her and post flyers in coordination with the Corvallis School District.

Based on the information we have at this time, Ava was last seen with her skateboard in the 700 block NE Conifer Bv at about 6:00 PM on August 20th. Ava is described as 5'6", 107 lbs, with reddish auburn hair which is shaved on one side and commonly worn in a ponytail. She was last seen wearing blue jeans with a black t-shirt and running shoes with a dark colored “fisherman’s cap.” Ava left with her skateboard.

Officers continue to follow up on every lead we receive, but the Corvallis Police Department is asking for help in finding Ava. If you have seen her since she left home on August 20th, please call our dispatch center 541-766-6911. We ask you only call if you have seen Ava; calling for status updates or questions will only tie up resources we could be using to find her.

UPDATE—-Authorities have told us they now suspect that Ava has been taken and may likely no longer be in the Corvallis (Oregon) area. They have told us to center our efforts up and down the I-5 corridor. We were told it is best to blanket posters at any frequently stopped places, like motels, hotels, 24hr stores, truck stops, etc. Please help us to hang signs anywhere and everywhere!! Thank you!! Ava Carey’s family said the 16-year-old’s disappearance from Corvallis is frightening because the Corvallis High School student wouldn’t be a candidate to run away. The family is fearful she is in danger and is asking the community for more help in finding her.

“We just need everyone looking at this point,” said Rebekah Carey, 35, Ava’s older sister.

Though Ava looks like a normal teenager, she was involved in life skills and special education classes at CHS. “She doesn’t have a friendship circle that would lead to her having a place to hide or to voluntarily leave the area,” said Rebekah Carey. “There was no argument. There was no blow-up, no stomping around, nothing like that. She is just simply missing,” she added.

Covallis police are investigating reports of a female attempting to get out of a moving vehicle yesterday in the Eugene area. They are unsure if it is related to Ava Carey or not. You can see their blurb on the City of Corvallis Police Department Facebook page.

From Sara Gelser, Oregon State Senate - 10 Ways to Help in the Search for Ava:

Here are some things you can do to help in the search for Ava:

1. Help spread the word that Ava is missing. This is not normal for her. She is vulnerable and has a large, loving family that desperately wants her to come home. This is the preferred poster to be shared. You can print it out and hang it in your neighborhood, download it and text it to those who might have information, or repost on any social media platform.

2. If you see anything unusual, please call the Corvallis Police Department. Especially keep your eyes out for jewelry and her uniquely hand painted long board that she had with her when she was last seen leaving to go for a walk.

3. If you see items, please photograph them and call 911. DO NOT TOUCH THEM.

Ava Carey search party on for Thursday, Corvallis community chips in to find missing teen

Those interested in helping locate the teen are invited, with coronavirus precautions in mind, to Cheldelin Middle School on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for a search party. Carey said this event will be a “one week reinvigoration” of the community’s efforts so far to find her little sister.

Ava was last seen with her custom-painted skateboard after 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, near the 700 block of Northeast Conifer Boulevard. She is known to be 5'6" tall and weigh around 105 pounds. She has braces, her eyes are hazel and her hair is a reddish auburn color about shoulder-length, but is shaved on one side. When she didn’t return home as expected that evening, her family reported her to the police as missing.

For more information on how to help, visit bringavahome.com. Anyone with information relevant to Ava’s disappearance can call CPD at 541-766-6911 or use the online tip sheet at corvallisoregon.gov/police/page/search-ava-carey.

There is a $5,000 reward being offered to anyone with information that results in her safe return.
