I read the link and the links that they provided. IMO it looks like something the media is trying to create. I know nothing of the accused's (Bryce Schubert) beliefs, but I personally (JMO) wouldn't take much stock in what the articles are suggesting. The cut is used by all walks of life, all colors of people. I found this:

This says it's most common on males in the US armed forces, LEOs, and "other safety personnel." And that in the 80s it began to cross over starting with young black males, and it's also popular among youth in some Middle Eastern countries.
Maybe it will come out that Schubert had the beliefs that you're suggesting. If so, speculation of his motives would go in a different direction. But IMO his cut doesn't suggest this.
