Sherry Wellwood, 46, was last seen Dec. 10 after she was discharged from a Portland hospital after a mental health hold. On Thursday, her car was found on a mountain road in rural southern Oregon, with no sign of the missing woman.

Wellwood had been discharged from the hospital on Dec. 10, where she was receiving mental health treatment. On Thursday evening, two people found Wellwood’s car in Josephine County.

Wellwood’s car appeared to be stuck in about 8 inches of snow and had gone slightly off the road. The snow under the exhaust pipe was black, indicating that the car had idled for a while. Wellwood’s car had about six inches of snow on top of it, which made him think that the car had been there for several days. The last snow had been five or six days before the car was found.

Friends of missing Hillsboro woman concerned after car found abandoned in southern Oregon

Dec 10 - Last seen when discharged from a Portland hospital
Dec 10 - Last phone activity
Dec 10 - Receipt in car for a purchase in Eugene
Dec 11 - Receipt in car for a purchase in Myrtle Creek
Dec 18 - Reported missing by a family member
Dec 19 - Car found in Josephine County
Dec 20 - SAR conducted a road search
Dec 21 - Crews went back out to conduct another road search as well as a ground search — covering off-road areas in all directions around the car.
Dec 22 - Snow and bad weather hampered the search crews’ efforts on Sunday, but they will resume when weather permits.
  • The area is in between Selma, Williams and Murphy and it would take several hours to get to any of those places on foot from the place her car was found.
  • On a narrow road uphill from the car, searchers found a beanie that may belong to her. LE will submit it for DNA testing.
  • “There were lots of butterfly stickers and images in and around the car,” Daniel said. “And the beanie also had a butterfly on it.”
  • They also found several items inside her car; a sleeping bag, tarp, a jacket and pamphlets with tips for survival and shelter in the wilderness.
  • All of her belongings were in the car, including her wallet, purse and phone. The phone only works off Wi-Fi so it’s not possible to track its location before she went missing. The last activity was Dec. 10.
  • There were receipts in the car for purchases in Eugene on Dec. 10 and in Myrtle Creek on Dec. 11. No one has reported seeing her in that area.
  • MP, who said she’s known Wellwood for 25 years, said she had been in the hospital for about two weeks. Upon discharge, Wellwood was supposed to go to a walk-in clinic but did not show up.
  • MP said she spoke to her friend on Dec. 10 before she was discharged from the hospital. She said she tried to convince her to stay longer, but Wellwood got agitated and hung up the phone.

I work and live about 20 minutes from where her vehicle was located. A very remote mountain area here in Josephine County and I suspect with limited resources for the sheriff's department not much searching is being done. I am a outdoorsman and 18 yrs of security experience. When weather permits I will drive up to that BLM road and spend some free time hiking/searching the area. It seems the least I can do as this case does not seem to be getting any exposure or traction. I shall post my findings if any here. God bless.

Interesting that she made a post on Dec. 5 that she was being released.
On her FB she shows her favorite movie as "Elizabethtown" where the protagonist, played by Orlando Bloom is going to commit suicide due to a business loss.

So, the theme of suicide is one that seems to be on her mind, at least in her choice of movies. She also states on FB she was released from the hospital and off to see a specialist. Sadly, it seems she needed to be transported, vs. released.

Very sad.

I wondered about that myself but this part of the report from the Sheriff made me think otherwise?

Interesting. Yes, that sounds hopeful. Maybe she had fears of being held against her will, or was in a paranoid state. Just guessing of course. Regardless, that does point to some hope.

Ok well I have now made 2 attempts to get to BLM RD 37-6-36. The first most logical route out of Selma OR on Deer Creek RD was tough sledding. Multiple downed trees over the road and then unpassable ice/snow at about 16miles in leaving me 3 miles short of the BLM RD 37-6-36 turn off. I suspect this is the reason no searches have happened as of yet as even though it's been sunny the road was treacherous at best due to steep inclines with ice. I will have to wait another month and then head up again and see if enough of it has melted.

I should note on this attempt via Selma/Deer Creek RD I did hike about another mile up the road (not recommended very slippery ice) but I did see footprints of a small man or woman has been walking that road in the snow over the last few weeks. I noted a attempted fire pit on the side of the road and a discarded lighter which all look pretty recently used. But it's still 2 miles off from the road her car was on.

IMO after coming from this direction I do have to wonder if she is not from this area and does not know anyone in this area she drove a long ways into the mountains. The question is why? I feel either A) she thought she was going to camp/hide out in her car for awhile and got stuck (which I would fear she succumbed to hypothermia) and this could have been a poor choice due to her mental state ...OR ... B) She met someone (on FB, the net or at the hospital?) from this area and she was trying to get there???

I dont buy she drove all that way South on I-5 and then went all the way out to this remote location for suicide. She could have picked any other mountain road and on the way down I-5 there are lots of options closer to where she was coming from.

Also my other attempt to get to BLM RD 37-6-36 was coming in from Cave Junction and on Caves Hwy/46. Once you get off the Hwy onto Little Grayback Road it is unpaved, lots of rock slides, downed trees. Not as much ice/snow but there is literally no way she drove her car in this direction. She may have walked down out of the area of her car through this direction but I sure hope not as I passed multiple questionable "camp" locations on BLM land where homeless/squatters/long term camping is going on. Looks "methy" and I don't suggest anyone go this way!!! Not good.

Lastly I have one more way she could have driven in from Murphy/Williams Oregon side and I will attempt to get in from that side later in the week and will report more findings. Much love & God Bless
