TAMAQUA, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- Lost in the woods... a 17-year-old girl never returned home Saturday night after going out with her friends. Search crews scour the area where she was last seen.

"Getting that victim back safe. That's the priority," said Chief Bruce Barton, with Northeast Search and Rescue.

17-year-old Cassidy Derr of Lansford left an outdoor party on Saturday night alone -- after having an argument with her friends. The party was in the woods of Schuylkill Township -- held in a hidden area on Locust Mountain, between Tuscarora and Brockton.

After leaving that party, she started walking toward Tamaqua. The last text she sent to a friend said she was lost somewhere along old route 209. That message -- sent around 8 a.m. Sunday-- is the last anyone has heard from the teenager.

"She was very bubbly and a positive person. It's very important we locate her immediately," said Michelle Klein, family member.

Cassidy's family describes her as being five foot two, 120 pounds, with blue eyes, and black and blue hair. She was last seen wearing a hoodie, black t-shirt, converse sneakers and jeans.

Signs are being posted around the area, asking anyone with information to come forward. And while the family wants your help, search crews say it's best to stay out of the woods while rescue teams look for Cassidy.

"We're having some issues with people going out on their own. They're not helping her by doing that," said Barton.

Six search teams are scouring the rugged terrain.

K-9s are helping to track Cassidy's scent.

"There's no reason to think she can't be alive at this point. We're still looking at it as a rescue," said Barton.

"Cassidy is a type one diabetic. Which means she has an insulin pump. If full, it will only work for her for four days. After that, she's going to run out of insulin," said Klein.

Not a good day to be missing in the woods. Bad rain today. Yeah, I can imagine getting lost easily in those woods up there. Some of those areas are really remote, and not well lit at night time, and really just rough terrain.

I wonder if it's suspicious or a complication of her diabetes?

Wow, such sad news! I didn't expect this girl to be found dead. RIP, Cassidy :(.

I wonder how full her insulin pump was when she went missing, since it would only work for 4 days (in OP). I'm thinking that was the cause, or perhaps dehydration.

Sounds like she went off by herself and had texted a friend Sunday AM that she was lost, so doubt it was suspicious. But, she must've been so afraid, poor girl.

They said found in a pit..... it may have just been an accident. RIP beautiful!

Is anyone here familiar with Locust Mtn and what type of pit this would be? I don't know if it would be a place she may have taken refuge in, or if it's likely she fell into the pit.

I was wondering this as well, but from the description given in the article, I feel like it's likely she could have fallen in. Just my speculation based on the article posted, though. I'd love to hear more about the area from a local.

Her aunt reported that her pump was full. (Times News article). As for the pit, it's more than likely from strip mining. The whole area is full of them.

Wow this so weird. We were actually camping Saturday and sunday night at Locust Lake State Park. We left Monday morning just befor 11 am and looks like we basically drove by the area. There was an older couple walking along a powerline on the mountain and a vehicle parked off the road. Nothing else even close to out of the ordinary. We hiked a trail most of the way up the mountain not too far away. Rugged at times, but nothing unusual for PA. The current mines are on the other side of 209, but probably plenty of old mines there. Not many official trails.

They reported her COD as likely natural causes, diabetic related.
