TAMAQUA, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- Lost in the woods... a 17-year-old girl never returned home Saturday night after going out with her friends. Search crews scour the area where she was last seen.
"Getting that victim back safe. That's the priority," said Chief Bruce Barton, with Northeast Search and Rescue.
17-year-old Cassidy Derr of Lansford left an outdoor party on Saturday night alone -- after having an argument with her friends. The party was in the woods of Schuylkill Township -- held in a hidden area on Locust Mountain, between Tuscarora and Brockton.
After leaving that party, she started walking toward Tamaqua. The last text she sent to a friend said she was lost somewhere along old route 209. That message -- sent around 8 a.m. Sunday-- is the last anyone has heard from the teenager.
"She was very bubbly and a positive person. It's very important we locate her immediately," said Michelle Klein, family member.
Cassidy's family describes her as being five foot two, 120 pounds, with blue eyes, and black and blue hair. She was last seen wearing a hoodie, black t-shirt, converse sneakers and jeans.
Signs are being posted around the area, asking anyone with information to come forward. And while the family wants your help, search crews say it's best to stay out of the woods while rescue teams look for Cassidy.
"We're having some issues with people going out on their own. They're not helping her by doing that," said Barton.
Six search teams are scouring the rugged terrain.
K-9s are helping to track Cassidy's scent.
"There's no reason to think she can't be alive at this point. We're still looking at it as a rescue," said Barton.
"Cassidy is a type one diabetic. Which means she has an insulin pump. If full, it will only work for her for four days. After that, she's going to run out of insulin," said Klein.
