OK. I just want to let you all know, that female genital mutilation is NOT a Muslim thing. It is a cultural phenomenon, NOT a religious one. It exists across theological constructs in the countries where it is practiced. Christians, Muslims, Animists and at least one Jewish sect. (There is a sect of Judaism in Ethiopia that practices it.) No religion officially requires it.

And judging by the language used in the press conference and the lack of specifics about the "heinous" and "inhumane" attack, I'm sad to say, I suspect that is what happened here.

It is practiced by SOME Muslims. But it is not solely a Muslim practice. Not all Muslims do it. Not all circumcised women are Muslim. Yes, some imams advocate it.

The Maasai stopped practicing it last year. Ethiopian Jews practice it.

Yes I know, but I'm looking for a possible tie to this case, and Muslim/Islaam seemed like a good thing to check out.

Would random strangers do this to a young girl? Who released her? Were there other girls there getting the same thing done? I know it's speculation but I think this could be what happened. It explains her being stripped and given a tshirt without any other clothes. Did she remember anything else? Was she drugged? Given anesthetic? Who the **** is Rashida?

I'm going to say it, based on the reaction by the mayor, senator, etc, the strong words being used, wpvi saying the attack left her scarred, etc. I'm Googling things like Muslim, Islamic law, female circumcision, and finding things saying it's obligatory.

edit - finding things saying that US Muslims are against it, but Muslims from other countries come here, and there are conflicts between their beliefs about it.

This would explain the grandfather's reference to "deranged predators".

It's often associated with Islam through culture, the way male circumcision is both interwoven into Judeo-Christian beliefs and American culture. But it's incredibly unheard of in South American Catholic culture, right? It's biblical for sure, but only some cultures really attached to that particular component even when following the same sacred text.

Same as it goes for Islam- the cultures that do it, have scripture that support their beliefs that it's mandatory... while cultures that don't do it, consider such passages symbolic or even unrelated.

Such is the way with religion.

The theory being discussed makes sense with how horrible they are saying this child was hurt, they do seem to be trying to communicate that it was above and beyond how most children are hurt by abductors.

However, female circumcision is rather unheard of for Black American Muslims.

Not making a claim in this case because that would be foolish of me without more data- just saying that it's uncommon if not unheard of in this particular culture. My brother in law in African American and Muslim from a nearby region to this case, and I called him to be sure I was properly informed.

Like us, he's horrified by the concept, and believes such individuals to be horribly misguided. (imagine people who do horrible things in the name of Christianity, and how you feel about that if you are Christian- same base response)

However, he feels if this family or any members are not from America originally and are African or Egyptian decent, then that would be a stronger possibility. Just one opinion, fwiw. JMO.

The age for FGM varies greatly, anywhere from infancy to mid-teens.
