ChuckMaureen - I have no personal opinion on WPXI, as I'm just a bit out of their coverage area. But I wanted to pull this post of yours forward, as you pointed out an example of their questionable reporting. It's something that personally always bugs me. New information is released and rather than properly editing a prior article to assure only updated info is included, they just toss the new info at the beginning of the old article without regard to the accuracy of previously written portions of the article.

It is frustrating when article text is not directly updated or corrected but I believe there are reasons, one of which is how the Internet and search engines work: time-stamp of articles. This leads to the next reason:

Another reason is for news orgs. to maintain articles in historical sequence, regardless of correct or incorrect content. Unfortunately, there is no definitive method for determining where the issue lies: is it sloppy, inaccurate information gathering or is it that gathering information from multiple "official" sources who aren't on the same page regarding most-recent data leads to confusion as to just what is the reporter supposed to use?

A good journalist is taught to report as told or as seen, no emotion nor opinion should color the data. Since the news orgs. and their reporters are on the front lines of communication they are the first and sometimes only ones to take the hit when information is not accurate or up to date.

Just read this whole thread. Have you guys read up on the Paul Kochu case? It is similar to this one. My sister was telling me about it when I told her how I was reading up on this case(She's been following DJ case and told me about)to see what happened. The Paul Kochu is very similar to DJ's case. Paul was a gay Duq student who was found dead in the Ohio River after going out for a few drinks in the South Side of Pittsburgh. His death was ruled a drowning which could mean a lot of things but his family questions it and thinks more could have happened. Google his name and check out the link. I'm not sure I can link to it but it has info about the case on there from his family and you can also find news links but I recommend this one bc even though its before they found him it tells info of the details of the night:

Where did you read that he was gay? It was not included in the article you attached.

My sister said she thought she read it somewhere. She went to look but couldn't find it and said she might be wrong about it. So my bad if I'm incorrect.

Early on the gay press was reporting that Dakota was gay and missing.

I have wondered the same thing many times. Unfortunatley, I believe the same things were happening when Paul Kochu was missing as well. I don't believe they searched down river then either. I'll have to research that to make sure.

I participated in the search for PK about 6 days after he was last seen and it was a complete joke. No police presence whatsoever.....nothing. Not even one person from LE bothered to show up for one minute to give some tips or even a little pep talk to the group, most of whom, including myself, who seemed to never have met Paul and did not know his poor family. The obviously frantic family and friends did their best to orchestrate the search but I was very confidant that the 40 or so people that showed up that Sat. morning were not going to miraculously stumble across him or he was not going to magically appear suddenly while we were handing out fliers in about a 10 block radius of his home. All I remember thinking was my God, hopefully LE is working around the clock behind the scenes trying to unravel the mystery of what happened to this poor kid on that random late Monday nite/early Tuesday morning and if not, I hoped no loved one of mine ever goes missing in Pittsburgh. I even think it was a friend of Paul's who located the only known (or shown) video footage of him by going door to door in the area and not law enforcement. It was all very discouraging and sad and I hope Paul's family can find some answers they are so desperately seeking more than 2 years later.

What is wrong w PPD, have they no empathy or compassion for these families seeking answers? It is so wrong :(

Not only am I truly disgusted with the fact that it’s been another 10 days without any shred of new detail from LE. (No more leads, no more surveillance, nothing.) I also can’t understand the whole cell phone records and that sort of detail not being able to be collected sooner. I know today Pittsburgh police swore in their largest amount of manpower in over 15 years. Yet while I was out at lunch walking the riverbanks on an over 50 degree day to possibly find anything to give this family closure…..funny I didn’t see one “diligently” working LE or river crew out there today. Why not? I wouldn’t be able to handle this if it were my family.

A search for DJ is scheduled for Feb 18, 2017, to begin at 8:00 a.m. Meet-up location is Riverside Park, Glenfield, PA. The park is nearly nine miles (as the crow flies) from Katz Plaza and is located on the far-north bank of the Ohio River across from Neville Island. Organizers also scheduled a drone for to scan the Ohio River and its banks.

Search organizers (and likely, LE) probably hold a thought as to where DJ ended up, but *how far* and a *reason* for the situation remain unclear.

KDKA TV live says a body has been seen, boats in area.......DJ has been mentioned.....no link and no formal release, just live news

Same area that the cadaver dogs hit a few days ago on the bank. It was frigid here and is 53 degrees now.......

It is not the same area. The scent was at Sixth Street. Today's search is farther upstream, past Ninth Street.

WTAE-TV was doing a live feed on facebook of the river search near the 9th street bridge. The boat turned and started speeding down towards the ohio river as if they had received another spotting notification. An object appeared to the left in front of the boat, and the camera operator abruptly jerked the camera away and killed the live feed. It was too far away and too blurry to make anything out, but there was definitely something in the water before it cut out.

This was one hour ago on WTAE-TV's FB page:

0:00 River Rescue is returning to their headquarters. We are ending the live video.

No word yet regarding the object but it appeared as too large to be a body.

I'm hoping this wasn't an effort by anyone to force a patrol of the river...
