The pain of missing a loved one, the frustration of days and days passing by without finding a clue, the desperation that envelopes one's being when one's torn between not giving up and attempting to feel 'normal'... all understandable and heartbreaking emotions, but at the point when those feelings morph and merge in to an anger directed at agencies who have helped and continue to help in ways in which they are trained to do so does not encourage their cooperation

Even 'professionals' exhibit human emotions and when someone beats up on them there is the possibility they might shut down or shift focus to any of many other cases in which they must address in their job.

It is difficult for loved ones to remain polite and humble in such circumstances, and I hope the professionals involved in this case maintain their professionalism while still maintaining their human compassion and understand there is a mother fighting back against the likely reality she has lost a son and her release of anger is a mixture of wanting 'something done now' and a survival technique.

I also hope the professionals shift from the typical play book and expand the communication channel to the family: keep them informed, show them all video in your possession that shows DJ and help put their mind at ease that you are doing all you can... if your are, indeed, doing all you can.
One thing to consider is that law enforcement may be holding some information closer to them for fear of having it released and broadcast across social media. Some family members are very active online and may inadvertently release information that the police do not want them to...even trivially seeming details might compromise their efforts.

That is a given, it's SOP but we realize such a tactic is relevant if foul play is at hand. So far, there is no reported evidence that suggests it. Erring on the side of caution is laudable, and is smart regarding future case, but painful for the family.

I follow the "Pittsburgh Bureau of Police" on facebook. Around 3:30 pm they posted, "We have thoroughly investigated a claim that missing person Dakota James was being held against his will in a home in Shaler Township. He was not at the location and there is no reason to believe he ever was. Many thanks to the Shaler Township Police Department for their assistance. We appreciate the community for bringing this to our attention."

I'm not sure what to even think of that.

That seems bizarre.

I've never followed a missing case like this before. Is it common to get reports like that? The mother has encouraged so many shares across Facebook to alert everyone she can. Maybe it's bringing out weirdos who are toying with the family's emotions. How sad. Good for the police for following up on it.

WPXI is reporting on it now. Seems to be a hoax. What a down right horrible thing to do.

That is a terrible thing for someone to do, especially to this family who has been through so much. It's so unbelievable that it's actually kind of believable. What if it was true and he had the wrong address?

I just read the post on WPXI. Looks like someone faked the message on an online food order. It is even more bizzare...

Reading the message is chilling.

I tried to post the image here, but I don't have a profile to do so. The message claims to be written from him, and it says that he was kidnapped several weeks ago and was being held at a house in Shaler in the basement. They redacted the address. He asked them to call nine-one-one.

My heart aches for that poor family.

What if that note was authentic? And what if by the time the police got hold of it, the people from the house moved DJ? How do they that it's a hoax? Maybe my imagination is running wild. I just can't wrap my head around it.

Wow! This is so very odd. If I was the LE I would go back unannounced to search just in case he was taken out of there before the LE got there and then brought back later. It says in the article that the image was spread throughout social media. What if someone did have DJ and they saw that image on the internet and then took him out of the house before the LE got there?

I wondered the same thing. How do the police declare that something is a hoax? It might be easy to clear someone out quickly in a case like that. If I were the family I would be beside myself and would want that house to be staked out.

Can LE get clues online by tracing back to where that Yelp request came from? Maybe they should get some specialists from CMU together to help with the digital forensics. Surely they know how to trace things like this better than most people.

It makes me anxious just thinking about it! I don't understand why someone would do that. And I agree there has to be a way technology wise that they could trace that request to Yelp to find out more info on where the hell it came from. You'd think they'd look more into where it came from. IP address would give a lot of information. This doesn't sit well with me at all. Like I said if the image was passed around on the social media like that article says it could be that someone did have him and then get him out there. If a perp had him hidden somewhere you can bet your *advertiser censored* they'd be following this case like white on rice to make sure they aren't close to being found out by police. It scares me because if that ends up really being him he could be so much danger right now.

and what is the motive to even stage a hoax like this? Bored teenagers? Come on...

If he was being held in the basement of a house, how was he typing a message into an online order form?

If the perp (of the hoax message) is technically savvy it might be difficult to identify them. Connecting via Tor or other tunneling protocol, through proxies hosted in the Americas or overseas would make it near, if not entirely impossible to trace.

The order was sent last night at 10:59 PM. I'm guessing LE did their due diligence before reporting this. Part of me wishes they hadn't said anything at all.

I agree, why release it? Let's hope they did their due diligence and can 100% confirm it is a hoax if they're now broadcasting the message. How can you call it a hoax when you can't identify who sent the message? This poor family...

Well, they had to say something with it floating around social media. Even if it was true, DJ could have been moved and is in even more danger because he tried something. This is terrible no matter what's true.

Guessing there was never an order at Tootsies famous beef and it was photoshopped?

I think I saw the restaurant released a statement saying they did receive the order and reported it immediately. They didn't know how it got on social media, but if you search the twitters, someone sent a photo to their child who then shared it.
