Volunteer firefighters from several area departments plan to comb sections of an expansive wooded area in Fayette County Sunday in the hope of finding a woman who has been missing since Sept. 16.

South Connellsville Fire Chief Jeremy Grubbs said about 20 members of his department, responding to a plea on social media by Mt. Pleasant firefighters, will lead a group of 40 other volunteers as part of the search for Leah Marie Owens, 31, of Bullskin, reported missing by her mother.

According to Grubbs, contingents from Everson and Bullskin Township departments are among other firefighters expected to join the search through state gamelands and adjacent wooded areas bordered by communities such as Connellsville Township and Normalville. Gary Huffine, the department's third lieutenant, said the area is a popular place for hunting and riding all-terrain vehicles and includes abandoned mines that no longer can be entered.

Grubbs said the searchers guided by his department will head into the woods from Dushane Avenue in South Connellsville while other groups will enter from various perimeter locations and will advance toward the center of the woods.

"We're going to cover what we can cover in our area," Grubbs said, noting many of the volunteers in his group intend to search on foot.

Others who want to take part in the search are asked to call or text 724-953-5213 by Saturday.

Justin Jellots, Owens' brother-in-law and the search operation sections chief working with Bring Our Missing Home, said they used drones, mounted teams on horseback and ATVs in their search. They also had boats searching nearby bodies of water.

"We covered a lot of areas of interest today," Jellots said. "We don't plan on stopping, even though we didn't have anything really solid to go on. As far as findings go, we found a lot of pieces of interest."

Jellots says they plan to coordinate another search within the next week or so.

So I see there were 4 people who she was supposedly last seen with...
What was she doing with people like that? All 4 of them were arrested for drugs etc.

I'm not trying to sound rude or argumentative, so please do not take it that way...
I do not know her. I do have a friend from that area however, that does. But yes, it seems the "company" she kept that night was not exactly the best choice. But regardless, she's a mother, daughter, sister...and she's missing. Her family needs closure. I can't even begin to imagine the pain of not knowing.

Where is that information coming from? Do you have a link?

Or have I missed something?

Either way if what you're saying is correct this sounds like it's going to end the usual way :(

[h=1]Homicide charges filed in case of missing Fayette County woman[/h]
State police on Thursday arrested a suspect in connection with the disappearance of Leah Owens, a Fayette County woman missing since September.

Thomas N. Teets, 32, of Dawson, faces multiple charges by state police in Uniontown, including homicide, abuse of a corpse, robbery, aggravated assault, theft and tampering with evidence, according to Trooper Robert Broadwater.

“The investigating officers are still in the process of interviewing Mr. Teets this morning. But he was arraigned on multiple charges, including homicide, filed in connection with the ongoing investigation,” Broadwater said.
Further details were expected to become available later Thursday.

Thomas Teets is charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, abuse of a corpse and tampering/fabricating physical evidence.

The last time Leah Owens’ family saw her, she was with Teets at the Mt. Pleasant Walmart. He was driving Owens vehicle.

Teets was seen driving Owens’ SUV days after her disappearance.

Teets’ stepfather told police that on Sept. 15, Teets returned home driving Owens’ SUV. His shirt was off, wrapped around his hand, and he was covered in blood.

Teets' blood was found on the passengers' side door of Owens' SUV and on a knife that also had Owens' blood on it.

Teets' mother told police that he admitted to her that he killed Leah Owens, but said it was in self-defense.

Teets has faced numerous charges dating back to 2006 including drug charges, burglary, criminal mischief, trespassing, retail theft, driving under the influence, driving on a suspended/revoked license and speeding.

A new article with a lot of details. Police had been onto the suspect almost immediately. They recovered items such as a bloody shirt and the keys to Leah's vehicle at the suspect's mother's house one month prior to the arrest. She was last seen around 2pm on September 15th at the Wal Mart in Mt Pleasant per her sister. In the article we learn that he had returned home to his mother and step-father's residence covered in blood between 4:00 and 5:00pm on September 15th. A friend of the suspect drove him to Morgantown, WV (40 miles away) to have the suspects cut finger treated.

A man who was arrested and charged last week with the murder of a missing Mount Pleasant woman has pleaded guilty.

Thomas Teets, 32, of Connellsville, entered his plea in the Leah Owens case Thursday morning. He is sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison.

Teets has waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, theft by unlawful taking, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence, according to an online docket posted Tuesday.

An article with some more details.

As expected the plea deal was in exchange for leading LE to Leah's body. Also, the injury he incurred while stabbing Leah was that he lost one of his fingers on his right-hand. The DA refers to him as "9-finger man". Apparently, in order to get the plea deal there was a time limit to lead them to her body.

"Camie (Crosby) had given him two hours to lead us to the body or there would be no plea deal, and she also wanted a confession," Bower said. "Both the investigators and I believe we never would have found the body without him leading us there."

Camie Crosby is Leah's mother.

The state also had him assigned to SCI Greene which is not far from the area so I expect that was part of the plea deal as well so his family could visit him easily.

Leah was found in this area.

This is about 15 miles from where her car was found.

Not to necro the thread, but are you sure this is where she was found? As a local, while it seems like there's a lot of woods here, the whole road is actually littered with houses, farmland and chatty neighbors. I can't help but feel someone would've said something if they saw it.

There was also a bit in the press conference that referenced drug deals, and word on the street is that happens primarily around the core of Dunbar—coincidentally where it's a lot more heavily wooded. There was also this clip that was taken supposedly on the road where they were searching for her, and that doesn't look like any road I've seen along that route;

Again, sorry for the ping; I've been a lurker for a while when this popped back up on my radar. Just thought I'd throw in my two cents if it meant anything.
