The "key" is dated 1946 and your lady wasn't even born until 1957.

I really don't think this key was in the hands of the original owner. It says that stones are missing and it looks like there should be stones all the way down the piece. Not a very classy piece of jewelry for someone that is a life member of such an organization. Just my opinion.

I don't see how they're ahead of us, proposing a younger black woman for the body of an older white woman.

Maybe that lady had her mother's key.
I like to keep heirlooms of my mother's.

Woohoo! I got a reply from the myspace account. Okay, sleuthers, lets get this figured out if it's not her.

Edna Mathis
Collingswood, NJ
The date on the key is infact the date she became a lifetime member.
Her chapter, Alpha Delta, was located in Philidelphia.

This is all we could get. Good Luck and keep us posted on anything you uncover.

This is why I LOVE websleuths. All of you are amazing.

I hope that information gets us closer to the victims identity. I figure the key is hers or is a relative.

I found information on Alpha Zeta Beta Sorority being the nations oldest non- academic philanthropic sorority. It was founded in 1897 in Johnstown, NY. Would this organization have key charms for their members?

I can't seem to find a link to contact the Sorority to ask questions.

TCMom, have you heard anything from the ME on this?

Back this summer I got information on who the keyholder is which I forwarded to the medical examiner. The dead woman would be too young to be Edna. Unless they are really off with the age. The reply posted by TC Mom is the identical reply that I forwarded to the ME this summer and posted on Porchight for the Missing and Unidentified threads. there are several threads o this case over there by the way.

So for her to have gotton a lifetime member key in 1946 she had to be at a minimum 16 years old because that is the youngest that was allowed to join then.

We are working on more information but in the meantime anyone wishing to be helpful can try to find obituaries for Edna Mathis to narrow down which one and possibly crosscheck family names with missing person names. My thoughts are that it isnt her since she would be much older but possibly a daughter or family member.

There are four Edna Mathis listed in SS Death index from NJ. Two are in 1985.

I have been in touch with the ME and so people are not duplicating efforts I have been posting progress on PL which someone pointed out earlier in this topic but I believe its the wrong link.

It is possible. But since she was at minimum 31 years old when she received the lifetime key it is also very likely Mathis was her married name.

Below is the correspondence I have had with the sororiety contact. (going backwards. Notice the DATES and times on the correspondence)

Im sorry, we don't have that information. We actually came upon her info through a archived opeleo (our national magazine) from 1946. In there we found not only a letter from her regarding receiving her lifetime membership, but also a letter from her on behalf of her chapter as her chapters Opheleo Editor (person responsible for writing chapters letter for the natl magizine) that is how we found out she lived in Collingswood, NJ but her chapter was located in Philedelphia.
I can tell you that women are allowed to join the organization as yong as 16 (pretty uncommon these days but not sure about back then) with parental consent, and it takes 15 years to obtain lifetime membership. SO, if she was the youngest she could be to join that means when she received her lifetime key at 31 in 1946. But like I said, Ive almost been in 15 years and haven't seen anyone under the age of 20 initiated. I would say, on average, most lifetime members are around their late 30's mid 40's when they get their lifetime key.

Sorry I don't have any more info for you. Good luck.

I passed the information on to a good friend who works cold case homicide in Bensalem to make sure it gets to the right person. He was faxing the information tonight.. But was wondering, Do you know how old Edna would be? I just wonder if this dead woman is her or maybe a daughter? And if there was information as to if Edna has a married name. The key is obviously hers. But is it her is the question. I cant bear all these dead people laying in drawers in a coroners office because they cant Identify them.. Its so wrong..

THis unidentified woman was found with a key saying
Alpha Zeta Beta sorority, inscribed with "Life Member" and "June 2, 1946
and the Name E Mathis.

Can you tell me anything about the group back in 1946? I have been looking for history etc.

I have located Edna Mathis from Collinswood NJ in the 1930 census. She also had a husband and a son. All three I have also found deaths reported in the SS death index. Edna in 2000 IF I found the correct one. Her son in 1993, and Edna Jan 2000, providing I found the correct Edna which I am pretty sure I did.

I have emailed ALL this information to the medical examiner. I have yet to find an obituary to see if there was other family members by that time.
