Nearly a year later, the disappearance of a prominent Old Forge businessman remains a mystery.
Detectives with the Lackawanna County district attorney’s office and the Old Forge Police Department are continuing their investigation into what happened to 58-year-old Ghigiarelli’s restaurant owner Robert Baron.
“As new leads develop, we follow up on them,” Old Forge police Chief Jason Dubernas said.
Baron was last seen at Ghigiarelli’s on Jan. 25, around 11 p.m. His son, Bobby, reported him missing the following morning. Inside the restaurant, investigators discovered evidence of what they said appeared to be a violent assault — blood and a tooth confirmed through DNA testing to be Baron’s.
Dubernas characterized new tips police are chasing as being reports of suspicious people that night and the whereabouts of a car.
A few days after his disappearance, authorities found Baron’s 2006 Hyundai Elantra in the 100 block of Howard Street. Investigators said the car may have been moved in the days before its discovery. Blood stained some of the interior, and excessive mud coated the tires and undercarriage.
Baron’s disappearance touched off widespread search efforts among law enforcement and civilians. Signs and billboards went up through the borough and on the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Moosic bearing the statement: “Someone here knows where he is.”
If someone does, they haven’t said.
Nor will investigators discuss the case in detail as it plods on to mark a year.
“There’s still some stuff pending,” District Attorney Shane Scanlon said. “There’s still some stuff going on.”
