GUILTY PA - Sherry Leighty, 21, Altoona, 1 October 1999

It's a city dept. I can't go up, I tried. I contacted the PA State Police & they said they can't help because the APD is a different entity. I even tried the FBI, that's how frustrated I am with this police dept, but they said the only way they can get involved is if the APD asks for their assistance, they just can't come in and take over a case.

Hmmmmm ... what about the Altoona Mirror, Centre Daily Times, WJAC, WTAJ, etc.? Doesn't Penn State Altoona have its own version of the Daily Collegian? If we can get the media involved, LE can't ignore it.

This might be really out there, but how about submitting her story to the show "Disappeared" on Investigation Discovery? Or "Dateline," "48 Hours," etc.?

Shellbellz... I wonder if a local lawyer could file the claim against LE pro bono? Or maybe one a town or two over if you think they do not want to get involved with the local PD? It doesn't hurt to try.

Is there anything on the APD facebook page about Sherry ? I was looking at it and don't know if I missed anything. I am sure people could help put the word on there ;)
Have you talked to the police chief, who I believe is a woman....maybe she can get the detective riled up.

Yes, they put her info on their facebook after I messaged them & ask them if they could do it.
The police chief is a joke. She's one of the ones who said about her being an adult & can leave if she wants to. I have no faith in this police dept. whatsoever.

It took me 6months for the Altoona Mirror to finally that second article in the paper. They weren't interested at all unless there was something new to report.

WTAJ just ran her pic & info after the Altoona Police Dept put Sherry's pic on their facebook because I message them to see if they could put it on their facbook, they responded back & said they were going to put her info on the news & asked if we would do an interview, so we called the detective and he recommended that we don't do an interview & just let them run her pic & info.

As far as all those shows, I've sent messages out to alot of those shows & haven't heard anything either.

Not sure. My husband doesn't think it's a good idea because he thinks it will make the dept. upset & then they won't do anything to help us. I feel like they aren't doing much of anything anyway but I don't know how that would work. If it comes down to it, we may have to resort to a lawyer just hope there is someone willing to do it.

do you think your local LE/detective would be willing to attempt to reach out for assistance in this case from the PSP- maybe this division?

also-( I need to read it over too) PA Unsolved/Cold Cases- there might be some helpful info there maybe, as in how to get this investigation ramped up?

Question about the Altoona PD fb page... Someone had asked previously about running Sherry's ss# and it was said that the number was ran. On a Dec 9 or 6 post on the Altoona fb page, someone asks if they did that and the impression I got from PD is that they had not.

Was the PD the ones who said they ran it?

I was told by the detective that her # was ran not only locally but nationally.

I'm under the impression that the APD are not interested in having anyone involved. I mentioned about what the FBI told me & they said because they have no evidence of anything there was no sense in getting them involved.

Shelly, I haven't forgotten about you or your sister and am working behind the scenes. I am trying to get some advice from some folks who may be able to provide us with some guidance on how best to proceed. I'm also trying to pull together some resources that we can maybe go through and see which ones are feasible or which ones you've already contacted. I was thinking that there must be a way to also search whether or not she has ever filed for a marriage license anywhere. I'm not sure at this point how to do that or if there is some national database or whether we would have to look state by state or county by county. Anyone know?

Thanks so much Jan, I truly appreciate everyone's help, it's nice to know there are people out there who do care.

I do have a document started that I think may help in the long run. Once I pull it all together, I will ask a mod for permission to post in here and then can share and it will be easier to add on to as we gather more information.

You may also be able to use it down the road to make a "road trip" of sorts down to the Altoona PD to demonstrate to them that you are serious and that you have already done the homework for them. We'll talk about that later.

Shelly, I pulled this statement from a previous post and want you to clarify:

Sheldon Dumm, Sherry's father, who passed away in 2005, last saw his daughter on Sunday, September 26, 1999 when her ex-husband's parent's dropped her off at work a block a way.

My question to you (if you know) - the above sentence leads me to believe that Sherry saw your dad on the same day as her ex-husbands parents dropped her off.

Is this accurate, and if so, do you know if he saw Sherry before or after they dropped her off ? Did your dad live close to her and her ex's parents?

I believe Sherry was living with her estranged husband at the time, or was she living with her ex-husband's parents and he lived somewhere else?

TIA

It really infuriates me when a police dept. can't seem to do their job properly! :furious:

I am certain you and your family have been out of your minds with worry and frustration over the years shellbelz. Anything I can do to help please let me know.

Something doesn't add up with the story about the x's parents dropping Sherry off a block from her workplace. Why would they do that, why not drop her off out front? It would be helpful to establish who was the last person to see Sherry apart from the ex-husband and his parents.

Shelly,
I didn't see your sister listed in the Doe Network.
You may want to contact them and provide information and get her listed here.

The whole thing sounds too hinky... and then the police don't interview anyone and take the word that she just ran off? And then 13 years later they file a report but still don't do anything? She's still missing after 13 years! If she just ran off, I'm sure SOMETHING can be found SOMEWHERE ??? And why bother taking a report 13 years later ???

It's hard to do any sleuthing because it the person isn't named in MSM as a POI, I'm not sure we're permitted to sleuth them... grrrrrr

Shelly,
For future reference, I will refer to ex-hub as AL and will need initials only for ex-bf from Maine. AL is listed in MSM, but I won't sleuth him as he has not been named a POI at this time. Same with ex-bf.

I've submitted her information to them. I don't know how long it takes for them to put her up on their website.

OK, that's terrific! Do you remember when you submitted the information so I can log that?

Please note that I had been told previously that the administrator for DOE was on a "sabbatical" of sorts and was returning 1-1-13 (or somewhere around there). I think it was a tremendous amount of work for her and she just needed a break. So will just note that we need to f/u on that in the near future until we see her on there!

I've always thought the same thing, why drop her off a block away. As far as I know, they are the last to see her on that day.
