I think fraternities and sororities should be banned. Why do we need them? Go to school, study, live in a freaking dorm or apt. All of this party B's and exclusiveness B's none of the mentality of Greek life has anything to do with the real world.

Sickening - IMHO fraternities/sororities need to be done away with. College academic clubs are fine and not exclusive, do not involve hazing, either.

The worst part is if these young men are charged with murder that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

Not a good thing for one's college career.
My son is looking at colleges now (my daughter stayed local for University), I already told him he was forbidden to join a fraternity.

Our Condolences to Timothy Piazza's Loved Ones.
I am late to this story, I detest fraternities, so it's hard to be impartial. But the timeline is shocking to me. These guys were cold, callous and disgusting. When will Greek life end? It has no place whatsoever in getting a learning degree. I'm so sick. This poor, poor boy.

I agree 100% and then some more, frats have no places in university education.

And serious students won't care about frats they're too busy studying, working at a job after class/study time, doing volunteer work, etc. And their social life doesn't revolve around partying and getting drunk, they actually do something productive (in my case it was the local Library Friends Group, local women's club) with their time.

I fail to see anything productive for the real world when it comes to frats.

From your link zen. I could just cry....this hurts so much to read.

"At the Hershey Medical Center, where their son was flown for treatment, the Piazzas leaned close and told him they loved him, as a tear rolled down his cheek."

“You want to know that he heard you,” Jim Piazza, 55, an accountant, said. “But on the other hand, if he heard us, he knew he was dying. So, I don’t know which one is better.”

That just ripped at my heart. Oh god. :(

You're not alone. Almost HALF of of his blood was alcohol, if I'm understanding correctly. And these idiots were desperate to do whatever they could NOT to call for help! This is such a tragedy.

No, that is .4% not 40%.

The legal system uses a more scientific method for determining when a person is drunk, Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC,) the percentage of alcohol in the blood (or proportion of alcohol to blood in the body) as someone drinks. In most states, a BACof .10% is considered legally drunk.

I found this amazing. All this was going on, and the adviser who lived there had no idea? Hopefully, he now has another place to stay.

"No charges were filed against Tim Bream, 56, a Penn State assistant athletic director and head trainer for the football team who also lived in the Beta Theta Pi house. Bream was employed by the fraternity as an adviser.

Parks Miller said Friday that Bream was in his room at the fraternity house on the night of Piazza's death, but the investigation did not reveal any evidence that would result in charges."

That is just stupid IMO- I think a 200 lb person crashing down 15 feet of stairs makes some dam@ noise.

All of my nephews pledged Pike, as is family tradition. One of them had to be taken to the ER (by family) after a hazing incident when he was forced to become extremely intoxicated. Then, his fellow Pikes flogged him across the back, buttocks and legs with a whip until he passed out from the intense pain. Long, wide swollen whelps, too numerous to count, were bleeding. He suffered a severe migraine for the next week. Couldn't sleep on his back. Flinched when someone would get near his wounds. It was more horrific than what I have shared but he refused to allow his parents to file assault charges. We are thankful he lived.

Understanding this aspect of abusive human behavior cannot be found. My heart is filled with sorrow.

May Comfort and Peace be with Timothy Piazza's family, friends and loved ones.

I am saddened to hear of your family's ordeal with that Fraternity. Thank God your nephew survived. Shock to a system can have fatal outcomes.

The cruelty is just beyond.

oh Dedee, I am absolutely horrified to hear of your nephew's injuries! I am so thankful that he survived this awful treatment but sickened by the cruelty & torture that is encouraged by uncaring and disgustingl fraternity members. I know I sound like a broken record but it hurts my heart that so many young people can gang up on one individual and inflict such humiliation/pain/torture. I could NEVER forgive my son if he were to ever partake in such hurt and degradation against someone else.

I, too, have stopped reading all the links because I can't stand to read about a gang of a$$holes turning on one innocent acquaintance/fraternity member. Has there been any response from the parents of these barbaric 'students'? I simply don't have the stomach to read about anymore cruelty that was inflicted on Tim during his last hours. This poor young man. I wish I had words to express how awful I feel for him & his parents.

Let's not paint all sororities and fraternities as the 'bad guys' on all college campuses.

The Pedo state crimes were not associated with either. It was the football $$$$$$$$ and the absolute worship of Joe Paterno as some deity for winning football games.

And now we see a Pedo State Trainer: gets off scott free: http://www.pennlive.com/news/2017/05/penn_state_football_trainer_ti.html

Joe's son is now on the BOR...

IMO... that is sick.

The preliminary hearing will be held on May 17, 2017.

Bluesneakers (you are my expert on threads) Should we have a separate thread for just legal proceedings?

One of the lawyers for the hazing students is Frank Fina. He left the D.A.'s office after he apologized for his role in a *advertiser censored*-sharing ring while he was in office for the D.A.

From article (below): "Fina has apologized in the past for what he has conceded was poor judgement in his participation in one of several *advertiser censored*-sharing rings exposed by Kane involving staff at the OAG and others within the broader criminal justice system.

But he has also been resolute in his assertions that those actions "do not in any way shape or form equate to the professionalism of what we did," and he says he is leaving the prosecutorial field with his head held high."
