Yvonne Baldelli Missing:
FBI Searches Panama Hostel Where California Woman Vanished

04/27/12 10:09 PM ET
Searches on land and by divers off the coast have turned up no sign of Yvonne Baldelli, 42, of Laguna Niguel, California, whose family reported her missing in January.

Panamanian police investigator Alexis Munoz told the AP that his officers, FBI agents and forensic specialists were using a chemical that could reveal signs of blood on the walls and floor of the hostel El Sapo, in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, a popular tourist spot where Baldelli was last seen on Nov. 26.

She was seen with an American boyfriend, who left for Costa Rica days later and has since returned to the U.S., according to Munoz.

Neighbors say Baldelli and her boyfriend had a volatile relationship. No one has seen her since November.

"They heard a lot of fighting and screaming on the 26th (of November,)" James Faust said. "And they say that's the last time they ever heard of her."

Police named Baldelli's boyfriend a person of interest. He told authorities and her family she left Panama for Costa Rica, but when they checked there was no passport record of her ever leaving Panama.

Case of missing O.C. woman now homicide probe

The case of a former south Orange County woman missing in Panama is now a homicide investigation, according to a prosecutor there.

In addition, the case has been moved out of Bocas del Toro province to a higher-profile office in David, the capital of the Chiriqui province. The move is expected to bring additional resources to the case.

In the months since the search began, the FBI has joined the investigation, assisting Panamanian authorities in looking for trace evidence at the home where Baldelli and Brimager stayed. Also, Panamanian police named Brimager a person of interest in Baldelli's disappearance.

Vigil today for O.C. woman missing in Panama

The family and friends of an Orange County woman missing in Panama are holding a march and candlelight vigil Saturday evening at Salt Creek Beach Park.

Panamanian police have named Brimager a person of interest in the case, and in mid-May declared it a homicide investigation.

Saturday's vigil and march is to increase awareness about Baldelli's disappearance, Beyer said. Salt Creek was selected because it was a cherished place for Baldelli, she said.

"The investigators think that she's gone," Beyer said. "And I don't think that they believe it was an accident. We want to find out what happened to her. We want to find out where she is. ... We want to bring her home."
