Detail: her knees were tucked up in a fetal position.

Yes, that too. She looked to be straightened out in the pic with the bedspread wrapped around her. So I wonder which is true? I tend to believe the hotel employee who found her. jmo

This guy is a classic Sociopath don't you think? Sociopath bleeds over into Psychopathic behavior. He seems to lie with ease and he really has no real fear when he's doing these things. High risk behavior doesn't bother him at all.

I think his parents are wrong - Natalie's case only brought to light the PROBLEM with Joran. I am willing to bet he was a spoiled and coddled liar his entire life. Remind us of anyone else in trouble with the law? Hm. I think we can all think of a few.

I agree.
To me the common theme we see with Joran is he is a child of privilege.

Poor Sociopath- no fancy lawyers, go to jail and prison for the earlier offenses. Less press, fewer dramatic trials

Rich Sociopath- someone buys them out of trouble until the trouble is so big it can't be bought off, or the money and power dries up.

Of course you get the exceptions to the rule like Casey Anthony who has no money or power, but is infamous anyway. Imagine Casey being from a family of privilege. Yikes.

Thank you Nums. I'm trying very hard to keep up with the threads and I apologize for not being able to so far. (I'm in the middle of a move~~over 3,000 miles away from my previous home and I'm still in a hotel with my family).

Has it been reported whether or not he held a ticket to the Netherlands? Or has it been reported he was going to go purchase a ticket with Stephany's funds? TIA!

Okay I'll scratch off the Netherlands but I wonder if he really wanted to go back to Aruba? I'm still open to that ~ but I will change my mind as I catch up on facts I'm sure! :)

If it has been reported, I have not found it yet. Suriname is in South America and it is a Dutch Speaking country. [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suriname[/ame]

<snip>
"Joran, he said, struck Stephany repeatedly, strangled her, shook her, threw her on the ground," Gen. Cesear Guardia told "Good Morning America" in Spanish. "And, when he saw that she was still breathing, he used his own shirt to suffocate her."
Van der Sloot also told police, Guardia said, that when was captured on hotel surveillance video leaving his room to get coffee and pastries, Flores was already dead. Guardia said he believes van der Sloot ate his breakfast in the hotel room next to Flores' body.

<snip>

I don't see any leniency based on these accounts.

Why? What went wrong between them to cause this? I thought we
established last night they already each other and Joran may have
bankrolled Stephany gamling from days before the last night? (Maybe that report was wrong and speculation?) I just want to know why he did this.

So far Peruvians have resisted outside pressures. Outside pressures will
build - that's guaranteed in this case. I wonder how long Peruvians can hold out against pressure to turn him over ... I think this is the most serious threat in this case (and Joran and his supporters know it!).

Why should the Peruvian's turn him over to Aruba?
Aruba did nothing when they had the opportunity--->5 years later Aruba continues to feel the pressure for doing NOTHING...shame on them!!!

Stephany Flores would still be alive had Aruba done SOMETHING

JVS is exactly where he belongs THANKS to PERU

JVS and "his supporters" have no say in Peruvian justice THANK GOODNESS

Cell phones. My son has the same hoodie. Not sure where he got it from.

Left (his), second row looks like women. Beepers, phones, women, knives... and pliers? Wow. What an awesome hoodie to be busted for 1st degree murder in.

Hate to ask but what is that??

Hate to tell, but it's when you slit a throat, basically ear lobe to ear lobe and pull out the tongue through the opening of the throat. Disgusting..........

The entire community of Union, SC wanted to harm Susan Smith after she confessed to having killed her own children by rolling her car into a lake w/ the kids still strapped inside. I remember news footage of a whole lotta people screaming "baby killer" as she was being transferred from one place to another.
I think if they could have gotten their hands on her she would have been toast.
It happens more than we know, I bet. Americans are capable of the bloodlust for a killer just as Peruvians are. Only difference is, Susan Smiths prison accomodations are MUCH better than Jorans, I bet. JMO

Although I am an advocate of justice for victims, I am just plain weak at seeing anyone being mistreated or humiliated. I know I am weird, I can't help it, can't explain it. :( I don't believe in revenge, but I believe in karma.

Ouch! He's just aging before my very eyes.

You're right. He looks bad here. Face looks very read; heart pumping, fear, not breathing...

Prison Arrival - Will he be there very long?
Holy crap. The vision of Miguel Castro Castro prison is quite alarming. Looks as though the entrance "pillars" are in mid-construction. Re-bar sticking out. Someone back there a few pages, posted a quote from a recent article, that this place was "Dante's Inferno". Man. Wonder if JVDS knows the reputation for this little piece of paradise.

A few scenarios:
1. Perhaps he doesn't believe he will be there that long; his mother will get him out.

2. His life, is definitely a commodity to be "traded". Lots of money to be made both ways.
a. There are those who will accept money from his attorney and family (mother), to give him more food, protect him, etc.

b. There are those who will accept money from Ms. Flores' family - and any of the outraged citizens, to make sure that he experiences exactly the injuries that he inflicted on this young woman.

Prediction: If his family cannot get money to those inside the prison, presumably to keep him alive, He will be found, with a white shirt around his neck. It may simply be a matter of who has more money.

Sorry to be so blunt. But I feel that someone will want him to atone, in a way that is symbolic.

Thank you for the amazingly timely links to videos. You guys are always the best.

I don't believe JVDS is going to 'suffer' at Castro prison as much as some in the media believe. I'm not saying it will be a happy cakewalk there, but he's being treated as a special prisoner, isolated from the mainstream, in with 'famous' or 'infamous' prisoners.

And...he has access to $$$ (through mommy and possibly others) so he'll be able to purchase some goodies and bribe the officers. His lot there will not be exactly the same as the destitute prisoner who has to sleep on the floor, 40 people to a room.

Peru is going to go to some lengths to protect him, if only to make sure he is able to be prosecuted. I bet the length of time for his case to get to trial won't be quite as long as the average person's either. Just a feeling I have. Right now JVDS is their 'star' prisoner and the eyes of the world are following his case and will continue to for quite some time.

I think you're right. And since he has a private atty, I think his wait for a trial won't be as long as the other prisoners who have public defenders. The ratio of public defenders to prisoners is insane, I don't remember exactly but it was just unreal. That's why the long wait to go to trial. Am sure Joran has the best lawyer his moms money (or Aruba's) money can buy. Hiws trial will be expedited. I hope all attempts to get him back to Aruba or to the Netherlands are unsuccessful. He's gotten enough special treatment, IMO, 5 years of freedom, globetrotting and gambling, thumbing his nose at the law, spending money and making a mockery of the Holloway's grief. Time for him to pay the piper. jmo of course.

I really think his plan was to pretend she was alive went he went to the store but dead went he came back. Once he saw the camera he knew that wouldn't work but because he didn't have much time to think it out he just went along with the ruse anything.

YUP, coming out of the room with the 2 empty coffee cups and danish sure didn't help much did it ;)

If it has been reported, I have not found it yet. Suriname is in South America and it is a Dutch territory.
For those who might be interested, Surinam (Suriname) is not a Dutch colony. It is a country on its own and has been since 1975.

Thank you num! I was looking at Argentina too. Can't find a description of their formal treaty with the Netherlands. It's not really important to the case but it's just something I wanted to have a look at for myself.

Detail: her knees were tucked up in a fetal position.

I hope one of the many nurse's and/or medical personnel that post here come and answer a question for me:

I have read that sometimes when there is a severe blow to the head that the victim of the blow will pull into a fetal position because of the damage to the brain?

Or am I not remembering that correctly?

Thank you in advance for anyone that will shed light on that for the thread and speculate!

OT: I have to sign off now and take care of some business, I'll be back later to read up hopefully! Thanks to everyone for their patience with bringing me up to date on the case :)

Not quite sure, JVDS was calm at the casino. Calm during their stroll to the Hotel, calm while leaving with 2 coffees pretending to be "locked out".
Robbery as motive, desperation, hatred for women....:waitasec:

IMHO, the most humane thing they can do to Joran is to lock him up and throw away the key....

Or drop him into the ocean, as and his Father may have done to Natalie?
Maybe the prison will be his ocean and the sharks there will do their work.
I have no more sympathy for this guy than I would have for a scorpion.

In the National Geographic video they said there were 64 defense attorneys for thousands of cases. A case could take up to 4 years to go to trial. I do not know what year the video is from.
