Dutchman Van der Sloot was handed over to members of Interpol Peru, in handcuffs and wearing a bullet proof vest

So far it is unknown whether he will be transported by air or land to Lima. The second option is the one that people in Tacna believe is the most plausible. When asked, the head of Interpol Peru declined to elaborate on that information for security measures.

Interesting blog post with photos from a San Francisco Chronicle reporter who traveled to Lima this week to cover the same poker tournament JVS and Stephany played at. Includes photos of the hotel, just a couple of blocks from where the reporter was staying.

I asked the guy in charge of LAPT registration if Van der Sloot was registered as a player in the tournament. He said there was no record--Van der Sloot was merely a "railbird" as they say in poker slang--standing elbow-to-elbow with the other spectators.

I could pull up just as many stats about many other countries. I lived in Peru for quite a long time and in my opinion it is no worse than other countries including some western ones. If you have first hand knowledge I would be happy to hear it.
Please note comment was made by brother of victim. I personally have no first hand knowledge of kidnappings in Peru or any other country. If you think the information your aware of in regards to kidnapping will help enlighten us in regards to this case, please share.

This is interesting, its a google translation of an article about Joran wanting the two reps from the Dutch Consulate to contact his mother about his arrest. And, about how he was actually taken back to Viña del Mar (after we saw him being taken into the police station in Independencia in Santiago. It sounds like he was taken back there to get his belongings, such as maybe a suitcase, or knapsack, or ?

" The Dutchman Joran van der Sloot (23) asked the two representatives of the Netherlands Consulate in Santiago, who visited him during his detention in Chile, he warned his mother of his capture in that country and their subsequent deportation to Peru.

This was pointed out to Emol Chilean police sources, the same that detailed the alien spent the night in a dungeon and guarded at all times by staff of the Investigative Police of Chile.

The sub-prefect Fernando Ovalle , head (s) Aliens of the PDI, revealed that the man was taken to Viña del Mar, where he spent Wednesday night in order to seize their clothes and electronic species, but the coach was frustrated because Dutchman forgot the address where he slept.

At this time Van der Sloot is in the station of La Concordia, in Tacna, where it will be moved to Lima."

Just on RTL News:

Joran will arrive in Lima in about 3 or 4 hours.

they were saying something earlier about a caravan of 9 cars taking him to lima. sounds more like a funeral procession.

I followed that case like a freak, but was not a member of WS during that time so I was not privvy to all the terrific sleuthing and resources available here. I totally agree that emotions can cloud judgment.

If you haven't watched the video of Jug Twitty released yesterday by the local CBS affiliate, I urge you to see it. He seems to have really calmed down and reflected over the past 5 years. What really struck me during that was when he referred to the first night they got down to Aruba - within 24 hrs of Natalee's disappearance. Jug said they tracked down Joran immediately and was standing at Joran's car - Joran and Deepak were both there and he asked them where they had been. They said they had just returned from the casino. However, Jug said they were sweaty, nervous and not dressed like they usually dressed when they went out partying. Jug said his biggest regret was not opening the trunk, that he believed that Natalee may have been in there at that early time.

Thanks, beach2yall, for taking the time to write a detailed account and for your very measured comments. Jug may have calmed down, but on the night when this incident occurred, he was quite understandably enraged. That teenagers being questioned by police (and shouted at by the Alabama friends) in a summer tropical environment at five in the morning were sweaty and nervous sounds normal to me. As for proper casino attire, I think that there's a pretty wide range. The car wasn't Joran; it was Deepak's and we can safely say that, stepfather's intuition aside, it contained no corpse: Its trunk was checked out and examined, tested, and cleared by the FBI.

I'm sure that poor Beth and Jug have spent five years rethinking, reframing every remembered detail and wondering what they or anybody could have done differently at any moment.

Don't want to beat a dead horse, but the state department's website does warn about kidnappings there (in addition to express kidnappings) under it's security section of the website; also on 3/15/2010 issued an express warning re kidnappings in a particular area; ditto the Australian state department etc. which adds kidnapping threat in Peru along border areas; also see www.comebackalive.com stats--a non-profit educational website for tourists. etc. There's lots of information gathered on various other websites on these threats in Peru. My friends in Peru are on constant watch for it as wealthy businessmen are prime targets. (In fact they are insured against it!) Kidnapping is extremely rare in the US outside of my area on the border with Mexico where it's become a huge problem the past few years.

Thanks for bringing over that link, I missed it when originally posted.

Very interesting this is the first I heard of this:

Despite the fact that the news stated that Van der Sloot and Flores were noted going alone to his hotel room, the reporter mentioned, "They are looking for another guy who was with him who they saw on the hotel security video."

Now they are releasing this!!

SoCalSleuth - I lived there, I traveled there, I know what it is like from personal experience and I have my opinion. As a travel agent I could bring you up a list of travel advisories for many countries including Fiji, Thailand, Bali, US, UK and on and on. It is hard to explain travel and danger or lack thereof to people who have never traveled. The world can be a dangerous place no matter where you go.
