There have been quite a few cases mentioned in this thread as possibly being related to that of the missing Lyon sisters. For at least one reason or another, each has been suggested as a possible link to the area, the time frame, various potential suspects, or to the girls themselves. Some similarities involve circumstances, locations, victimology, or just simply the fact that they have gone unsolved for such a long time.

Each factor in this case might be considered as a possible link to another case and because of that, readers and posters become interested in those other cases as well. Attention on these cases keeps them alive and active, but more importantly new information or a new look at them may lead to some of them being solved.

The Lyon case has had very few solid clues and no forensic evidence. But there have been leads over the years. Potential suspects have been named and discussed and their activities have come to light. Perhaps some of the other cases discussed here might have been perpetrated by one or more of the potential suspects discussed.

I tend to think that whoever abducted the Lyon sisters might have done the same thing before and after 25 March 1975. Who were the other victims? When and where did those other crimes take place?

I haven't read this entire thread...just glanced through some of it but I'd like to comment on 2 things...first, the photo of the person "Michael" does not look like Lloyd, Jr...Lloyd, Jr. has that very distinctive Welch look that some of the Welches here have. Second, this is the first time I've seen anything about this William Joseph Parker...my great grandmother was a Parker. It's a possibility he could be related to our Parkers from Virginia...they are not only in Bedford County, but spread all across throughout different counties. So if anybody has any personal information about William Joseph Parker, such as DOB, parents, etc., I'd like to know so I can check my family tree.

There were a few newspaper articles that mentioned his mother as Margaret Parker.

The two photos mentioned might not be the same person, but either might have been the Long Haired Man depicted in the sketch discussed. It is also possible that the one of "Michael" might only have been thought by parents to have been the mysterious "boy friend" who never came forward and whom they did not know very well. It is also possible that the "boy friend" could have been Lloyd Welch who went by the alias "Michael" at times.

I do not have much biographical information on William Joseph "Joe" Parker. Here is what is on the Maryland Inmate locator:

Name: Parker, William Joseph
Date of Birth: 1/16/1951
Department of Corrections ID Number: 151132

Holding Facility:
Maryland Correctional Training Center
Address: 18800 Roxbury Rd., Hagerstown, MD 21746

Parker abducted and murdered little Elizabeth Archard in 1978, but it took several years before he was identified, tried, and convicted.

Since we've mentioned William Joseph parker in this thread, I thought it might be worthwhile to point out a similar question that LE posed and speculated on regarding the abduction. This came from a newspaper article:

"At the time of his arrest, Parker was living and working as a probationary volunteer fireman at the Kentland Fire Department. He was also said to be an Anne Arundel County reserve deputy sheriff, and police have said they suspect Parker might have used his sheriff's badge to get the girl into his car. Parker was arrested by Prince Georges police at 2 p.m. last, Thursday on an Anne Arundel County warrant for "false or writing bad checks. Ten hours later Parker was charged with the murder of Miss Archard after police questioned him and compared him with a composite drawing they had prepared from witnesses' descriptions of the man last seen with Archard. The girl was last seen at about 1 p.m. on Aug. 28 less than a mile from her home. Witnesses said she was sitting on her bicycle talking to a man in a tan, early '70s model two-door car. Neighbors said at the time of the girl's disappearance that they could not imagine her getting into a car with a strange man. That is one of the reasons police are investigating the possibility

Oh my! He was a volunteer fireman and a reserve deputy sheriff, too?

WJP may need to be looked into as well regarding the "Annapolis Ransom" request at the courthouse.

Living in Anne Arundel County and having those positions, PERHAPS he THOUGHT he WOULD NOT BE WATCHED IN UNIFORM by police while at the courthouse.

Could WJP have REGULARLY BEEN AT THAT COURTHOUSE??

Is WJP still alive and if so, is he still in prison?

Two cases from 1977 .....

Here are two missing person cases - one from Ohio and one from Pennsylvania. They have been linked together by a serial killer named Edward A. Surratt who confessed to having murdered the missing women and the men they were with.

Surratt traveld the country committing his crimes. Whether or not he was involved in the Lyon case is not known. But I include him in these threads because he could have been in the area in 1975, and to illustrate two connected cases which have both similarities and differences.

These two cases were only separated by one month. They remained unsolved for 30 years.

Neighbors told police they heard what sounded like strong, rapid strokes of a hammer at 12.45 am. Some neighbors also later remembered having seen a man walking down the road from the direction of the truck stop. The couple's car was found near the entrance of a closed strip mine in view of the truck stop where Linda worked. Prints of a man's boots and Linda's bare feet, led from the driver's side.

For years the cases remained unsolved until serial killer Edward A. Surratt confessed to their murder in February 2007 while in jail in Florida.

He also confessed to the murder of Ranee Gregor. He declared in an interview that Linda Hamilton's and Ranee Gregor's bodies were "unrecoverable by anybody's standards".

Margret C. Dodd, 27, Missing since September 7, 1977 from Beaver, WV

Here is another missing person case from fall of 1977 - this one occurred in West Virginia. Note that there is a similarity to the Lyon case in that someone demanded a ransom payment of $10,000 from the victim's father.

-------------------------

Margret C. Dodd
Missing since September 7, 1977 from Beaver, West Virginia.
Classification: Endangered Missing

Vital Statistics

Date Of Birth: May 8, 1950
Age at Time of Disappearance: 27 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'6" - 168 cm; 141 lbs - 64 kg
Distinguishing Characteristics: White female. Brown eyes; brown hair.

Circumstances of Disappearance

Margret Dodd was abducted when she stopped her vehicle at a vacant service station lot four miles from her place of employment at the Cardinal State Bank near Beckley. Witnesses claim to have heard her screaming while she was being forced into an unidentified vehicle.

While there were no descriptions of the alleged kidnappers, police were initially searching for three men believed to be involved with the case.

An ex-convict, James William Hendree of Akron, Ohio, claimed he had kidnapped Dodd, or was at least in contact with the kidnappers. He called Dodd's parents, also of Akron, several times, the first time being on September 22nd. At first he claimed that she was being held outside of Ohio, then he claimed she was being held in Akron. He demanded a ransom of $10,000.

Arrangements were made for the alleged kidnapper to meet with one of Dodd's relatives so that the money could be collected and Dodd's whereabouts revealed. An FBI agent, posing as Dodd's father, met with the extortionist. The trip ended in Barberton, about seven miles outside of Akron, when Hendree held a concealed object to the FBI agent's head, claiming it was a gun. He threatened to shoot if he wasn't given the ransom money. Another agent, hidden in the car, ordered Hendree to drop the weapon. When he failed to do so, the second agent fired, killing Hendree. The concealed weapon was later discovered to be a pencil.

Investigators acknowledged that there was a possibility that Hendree only posed as the kidnapper to extort the money.

Margret Dodd is originally from Akron, Ohio but was living near Beckley, West Virginia at the time of her disappearance, while she lived in West Virginia with her husband.

Some agencies list her disappearance date as September 8, 1977 and spell her name "Margaret". She has never been located.

Without having read the whole thread, a question. Someone probably wouldn't go on a massive kidnappings spree involving several people and then move on to a different thing. Wouldn't they have likely quit by being caught?

Simplifymylife, here are some opinions.

1) Most importantly the abductor and/or killer or whatever is no longer a threat, for whatever reason, dead, in jail whatever.

2) One person makes a reference to boxes of case files. If this had happened recently a person could get a substantial amount of relevant info on the internet. Because it happened in the mid 70s, almost 100% of the useful information is not available. What's left is basically little.

3) It seems very possible, likely, that the abduction had something to do with the status of the girls' father. Actual kidnappings used to be more common I think and seem to have gotten rarer and rarer. It seems certain that the police would have gathered information on that at the time but it simply isn't possible to get that information except by paying probably an exorbitant sum to buy the files from the police. The fact that the case has probably resolved naturally, i.e. the abductor probably died or got caught, would make that a waste of money.

4) The issue of a prostitution ring involving such and such people, again, the problem is the time frame. At that time there were certainly a lot of prostitution rings, especially in an area like D.C. They can't really be researched, it's like shoveling water, kind of pointless except for entertainment. You could try to get the case files if you are interested and then get papers from other investigations and tie them together. You'd be spending thousands of dollars and even if you found something it would have historical value only. It would not directly affect anyone alive today in a substantial way. The possibility of the children being taken to be raised by someone else is near zero because of their age. Even years later they would remember being kidnapped and would not assimilate the way a stolen newborn for example would.

A person can easily uncover vast criminal networks today at little expense and which have a high relevance today. There are certainly also old crimes whose impact continues, and which would be worth devoting effort to. In this particular case, or series of cases, the next step if anyone were seriously interested would be to buy some of the original files from po!ice. I don't have enough interest or resources for that.

But here is a good link to start if you want to continue http://news.muckety.com/

Montgomery County Police do have several boxes of information regarding the Lyon Case. They likely have a lot of more recent information on their computers, but NONE of that data and information is available on the internet.

Back in 1975, this case was a very hot news item. It was on the front pages of the Washington Star and the Washington Post for weeks, and it was covered extensively on all TV and radio stations in the Washington Metropolitan area. News reporters asked alot of questions and Montgomery County Police held several news conferences a week on the disappearance of the Lyon sisters.

One can still read those news stories on microfilm. A few of the older stories made it to the internet - mostly here on Websleuths. More recent stories about the Lyon sisters' disappearance have appeared in many national newspapers and on-line news sites. But with all the power of the internet, very little factual information has been made available to the public on this case.

Any new evidence or information is still maintained by MCP in a strictly controlled and classified manner. And any new information will have to be checked against all that origional case material maintained in file boxes.

The perpetrator(s) of this likely abduction of two young girls need to be identified whether they are dead or alive, and brought to justice if that is possible. Any other possibly related cases - regardless of what county or state might hold jurisdiction - need to be carefully investigated to see if they might in fact be related and solved.

FleaSpirit,

...
Can I ask, what is the thing that drew you to this case and what are your ideas of what you feel needs to be done to wrap up this case?

If it were your 2 daughters missing for 40 years and YOU KNEW, that by the police FOLLOWING UP ON THESE THINGS, that a future generation of daughters WILL BE SAVED, WHAT PRICE DO YOU PUT ON THAT??

WHY IS THE FBI SPENDING TONS OF MONEY ON THESE OPERATIONS THEY DO--BECAUSE THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL!!

THEY DON'T ELIMINATE SEX TRAFFICKING, however they ARE HELPING MANY FAMILIES NOT TO HAVE TO GO THROUGH WHAT THE LYON FAMILY HAS HAD TO!!

What is your objective in posting on this case?

My interest in online sleuthing and n general started a few months ago when I read about a case, bought additional case material from the po!ice for almost $100, then tried to publicize it http://www.liveleak.com/c/FleaSpirit with no success so far. Then I started clicking on the cases linked in various places and so on and noticed that most of the investigations seem very incomplete. This specific case I don't remember why I clicked on it. As a young teen I left home for a bit in the late 70s and D.C. was one of the places where I had a negative hitchhiking experience. It struck me as a dangerous place to hitchhike around or through.

As for wrapping up the case, the first step would be to start with all the material that has been gathered and work done, by getting the paperwork the po!ice have. My personal advice would be that one hour spent negotiating to get the original material from the po!ice would be better spent than 5 hours chasing possibilities. As Richard says there is a lot of material and probably some of it contains highly useful information that you could never find online.

As for if it were my two daughters after 40 years missing, here is my guess and it might offend. I have no doubt the family of these two girls would give anything for some reasonable conclusion. But I'd guess too that if they had a choice they would encourage a person who was investing a lot of energy in their cases to put some of the energy to more likely solvable cases. If it were my kids of course I would continue searching and encouraging interest.

You ask why the FBI spends tons of money on these operations and say it is because they are successful. You are blending a few very different issues into one.

In my opinion first you have to define the objective of whatever 'operations' or tactics you use. In this case you have to ask if the purpose is a) justice in the sense of punishment or retribution or b) ultimately reducing the incidence of certain crimes or c) some other issue like professional considerations etc.

I'm not vested in any side of this case and have no pressure in any direction so I pick "b" reducing the long term incidence of the crime as the best objective. I already gave my opinion earlier that using the word "trafficking" serves other goals but not "b".

You say that approaching things as is being done will 'help many families not go through what the Lyon family went through' and it is debateable whether that is the effect.

Thank you FleaSpirit for answering the questions I asked.

In being honest, I had no idea that such a thing existed--such as buying evidence from the police.

What I was saying is that by the FBI breaking up many of these Prostitution Rings, many young boys and girls have returned home before 40 years have passed.

Thank you too for sharing your personal reasons for researching and trying to solve cases.

I am sure that the hitchhiking experience was a very scary situation.

I lived in Wheaton when this happened with the girls.
I am just a few months younger than Sheila.

I didn't plan to get involved in this case or kind of thing, however I was so deeply compelled when I learned the case came back into the news again.

My vocation is taking part in a worldwide volunteer Bible educational work.

I am really enjoying researching this kind of thing, however I am mainly doing it because in growing up in Wheaton, I feel like the Lyon family is part of my childhood. They could've been MY SISTERS or in my classroom at school.

Now that I am a parent, I want to help solve this unbelievable case that the Lyon family has had to endure waiting for so long.

Even if it is one little shred of information I have contributed that has helped in finding Sheila and Kate, I will be so happy about that.

Solving THIS CASE is most likely going to solve MANY others which may be connected to it--which will truly make all the time and energy everyone helping has put in--that MUCH MORE worth it.

I think the Lyon family would be very happy for others if that is how it turns out and realize that all of the time was worth it--even with these 40 year old cases.
