Potential DT Witness Sally Karioth

I made several comments on the trial thread about this witness today and won't repeat myself other than to say that Dr. K.s histrionics and hubris were exaggerated and inappropriate in the courtroom. This was not intended to be a performance: Dr. K. was testifying in a court of law. I did not like her.

She didn't seem completely sober to me. Anyone else thought so?

ETA: I rephrased my question :) because it was deleted by a mod.

I didn't care for her rambling life stories. She's told it repeatedly in lectures ,and I'm sure it came naturally, but she was testifying in court. Not the place. If she's testified before ,she should know that.
I also found her to be somewhat passive aggressive.
Even though she was admonished for talking through objections ,she continued to do so,even after HHJP said sustained.
She wanted to make sure the jury heard what she had to say regardless of the Judge.
That signals to me that she feels she is the most important person in that room. What's the word for that :waitasec:

If this woman wants to continue testifying in trials as an expert, she needs to watch a few trials with experts testifying. Her credentialing was lacking. Her demeanor was overly theatrical. Her responses were long-winded and rambling.
And, at least for this case, she had nothing to add.

I totally thought she got together with Dr. Bock!

I loved the faces that she made to the jury when there was a sidebar called interrupting her testimony. I kind of thought she was a little flirty with JB also but then who wouldn't . tee hee

That was immediately obvious when she talked with her eyes closed, and while gum chewing. She felt she was teaching the uninformed and came across as feeling very superior about it.
She was also impaired by something...

BBm: well me for one. I would rather cut my throat than flirt with JB........really.

:floorlaugh: Thus the reason for the chewing gum. LOL.

I gave her a perfect score for the beautiful backflip she did and her perfect landing on the Prosecutions side of the mat. Gold medal performance IMHO. :)

:p And that isn't an easy feat what with chewing gum at the same time.

It is an amazing opportunity to run into a truly valuable professor, there are few who can actually impact a student's overall outlook to the extent you have attributed to this professor. You are blessed to have had that experience.

Being a fantastic professor does not equate to being an expert in any field. While her motivational speaking career is also a tribute to her ability to 'help' those who have experienced a traumatic event, that also does not equate to being an expert. Her profession of 'helping' those who are bereaved or having experienced trauma does not equate expertise in the study of the 'expressions of grief'. There is little scientific data on that outside of the psychiatric, psychologic, and mental health professions.

For any professional in the health care arena at her level who cannot succinctly outline her own publications within peer reviewed journals screams of that individual not being steeped in the scientific expertise of the field. Experts study their field, carry out research and publish that research in order to raise the standard of the science and of their own profession and their own career.

IMHO She has stepped way out of the bounds of her actual abilities and it will show during her testimony that she was either not given the correct information about what she would be asked to testify to, or her eccentricities have reached a level of ego believing she has expertise when she factually does not.

Her CV leaves me to believe it is the latter.

I think in watching this train wreck it is pretty clear this woman has taken on this 'expert testimony' where actual experts would run from it like the plague because of the detriment to their hard earned reputations.

I'm still very thrilled for your having had your experience with her motivational abilities. Those are real and valid and she's to be commended for that work.

The only thing this lady motivated me to do was reach for the remote control.

This woman was quite strange, I thought.
She almost seemed to be sedated (or something). Can't put my finger on it but she was , well... different!

I personally didn't care for her.

The expert that didn't know why she was there, but was eager and excited to tell us about her life. I really expected her to have a top hat and her tap shoes for later on in the program.

IMO, she would be too bubbly for any mode of grief I'd be experiencing. Death should be taken seriously. Or no?

Ugh - this person's theatrical way of speaking certainly fits in with the entire defense team's soap opera drama tone they use when they are in front of the jury.

She seems to have received her degrees in the 60's and has done stage shows and helps to upload data into an online blog somewhere that is called the SE Research Journal. (Which she refers to as her peer reviewing other people's published works.)

I certainly hope that medical degrees expire or something because I want to make sure that all of my doctors have been updated with new medical technology and discoveries if their PhD is older than I am! There are certain things -like the ability to drive- that just don't get better with age.
:crazy::crazy:

This gum-chewing woman was painful to watch. She breezed in as though ready to address a group of awestruck students gathered to hear a famed professor. I kept yelling, "Get to the point already!" I bet the defense knew right away that this was a huge mistake. Ashton read my mind when he noted that according to her "research," ANY behavior could be explained away by "grief." Also, she said many things that most of us know from experience. We don't need "research" to know certain things.

Dr. Sally Karioth is an esteemed professor at Florida State University. I completely dislike Casey Anthony, Jose Baez and the entire defense team, but I will say that they are getting an absolute gem of an expert witness in Dr. Karioth. She is intelligent beyond belief, successful, capable and one of the most caring, endearing people you will ever meet. I took her "Individual, Death and the Family" course about two years ago in my senior year. It was, without a doubt, the most interesting, educational and satisfying class of my entire college career. It was honestly life-changing. Daily I refer to advice or things taken or learned in Karioth's class. She's not some unqualified clown, and she certainly is not an "overpaid public speaker" as someone so kindly commented. She is an amazingly accomplished, powerful, UNEQUIVOCALLY wonderful woman, and I can only hope to become half the person she is one day. I urge any of you who may be upset with the case (as everyone is) or Mr. Baez to not direct your anger or judgements toward this woman who deserves nothing but respect and praise. I certainly hope whatever testimony she may give is not overly helpful to the case of the defense, but there is no doubt in my mind that whatever she says on the stand will be smart, honest, factual and eloquent. No fluff or paying off this "expert witness". Trust me, she doesn't need the money or recognition- I believe she is quite comfortable in both respects. Sorry to rant, I'm sure there's an army of people who would join me in support of Dr. Karioth, but I simply could not sit back while the anger, or oblivion (leading to ignorance), of some, in any way tarnished the name of a truly incredible person!

I have no doubt she is an amazing teacher and counselor. She is very engaging and charizmatic. There is a place for that .
I do question why she testified ,if she doesn't need the money or the recognition. She said ,under oath ,that she knew NOTHING about this case.

If she knew nothing ,then it wasn't to correct what she perceived to be wrong, yet she didn't need the money or the recognition :waitasec:
She told JB that she was in London and there were people in Tallahassee that were very good, yet ,weeks later ,here she is back in FL testifying in a case she swears she knows nothing about. Curious, isn't it?

If what the sealed video on Dec 11, 08 says of ICA, that was the only day she grieved ... for herself. Which is what would be normal and acceptable behavior when one finds their loved one has passed. ICA hyperventilated, cried, was hysterical and asked for meds from what I remember.

So, ICA did in fact and very specifically know at that time Caylee had passed. And I believe HHJP could have been referring to this when he made his statement to JB the other day. I love the way HHJP gives gentle hints to JB. Is JB smart enough to catch them. Nope.

Do we have the Dec 11th video of ICA when she learned that Caylee's remains had been found? I have looked, I promise. I even googled. I can't find it.

Thanks in advance. TC, Robin

I looked for it, too, Robin, and I read that Judge Strickland sealed the tape because he said it was very damaging to the defendant.

Personally, I'd like to see the video.
