"A former detective claims police probably have 'nothing to work with' in the search for missing mum Samantha Murphy - saying their appeal for CCTV is essentially an admission they have no leads."

Slightly off topic: how do people end their lives in Australia? Presumably not with a handgun?
Lots do, with rifles.. the NRA lies a lot about Australian gun laws... sad to say, hanging is the method used the most, and men do it more often than women,

The highest suicide rate for females was in those aged 85 and over (10.6). Females aged 40–54 accounted for 25.8% of deaths by suicide among females.

Males aged 40–54 accounted for one quarter (29.1%) of deaths by suicide among males.

The pattern of methods used for suicide has changed greatly, sometimes rapidly, over the last century as new methods have become available or as restrictions to the availability of some methods have been introduced. The methods of suicide used by males and females differed over the period 1907 to 2022; however, as males account for the majority of deaths by suicide the methods used by males have a greater influence on the overall pattern than the methods used by females.

Thank you for the real information and data!

I think the point I come back to is that I just don't know enough information to make a guess either way. There are several different possibilities as to what happened to Samantha or not. I do not necessarily think there's much chance of finding her alive after a week, sadly. But I don't believe she ended her own life. I am aware sometimes people can break or impulsively choose to die by suicide, but I don't know if that is what happened here. She could've fallen down an abandoned mine shaft, she could've gotten bitten by a venomous snake or spider. The lack of information is mystifying and I'm sure it elicits the same feeling in many others. Not knowing is the hardest part for her family most importantly. Seeing as it's quite hot today (around 33 C in Melbourne, possibly higher in Ballarat), if Samantha is still alive, she needs to be found quickly. Exposure in this heat can be fatal.
Again, I hope for an outcome today, for closure for her family and people interested in this case.

There was mention of a K-9 unit early on but do we know if specialist blood or cadaver K-9 units have been used?
In an instance like this where there are so many mines and the possibility of her having had a medical problem off the main track, their input could be invaluable.
Trained dogs can locate scent a GREAT distance away.
Even if the dogs could track her scent to a place where it disappears would be incredibly useful.

I was wondering if the search areas were in several different directions because the canine unit tracked Samantha's scent in several different directions.

If Samantha ran/walked every day, there could perhaps be lots of her scent out there. I don't think the dogs would be able to differentiate (to us humans) that "this scent is stronger/fresher than that scent".

The dogs may just indicate on any of Samantha's scent ... which could be from Sunday, or Saturday, or any day prior.

imo

Thank you for the real information and data!
In general, in Au, the suicide rate has dropped remarkably, since 1997, and , perhaps significantly, perhaps not, in Victoria, the state in which the Murphys live, the declining rate is lower than all the other states in Au.... whether this has any bearing, when one actually is the statistic is problematic, but there it is......

Off topic, but one that I believe requires a trigger warning!
Caution: Some people may find parts of this content confronting or distressing. If this material raises concerns for you contact Lifeline on 131114

Don't read ahead if this is a trigger:
2455 men in 2022, 794 women in 2022
Mode- hanging is the most common method, then gas, then poisionous gas
Samantha's age, rate is 8.3 women: 100,000.

In rural areas whenever you hear young male dies in a single car accident into a tree or telephone pole. It’s usually a suicide. I’ve known people you used trains, hanging, guns and C02 poisoning also. So sad.

Authorised confirmed that another woman came forward as being this person. Authorities are scaling back search this weekend. Hopefully focusing on other lines of enquires.thi
Maybe he's one of those men who relies on his wife on what to wear on certain occasions..

Males account for the majority of suicide deaths but women attempt at a much higher rate.

I wonder why there is a cut-off time of 7pm.

"Any motorists who had travelled through the area between 7am and 7pm on Sunday are also asked to review their dash-cam footage."
