SC - Bride, Samantha Miller, dies 5 hours after wedding when DUI driver slams golf cart, Folly Beach - 28 Apr 2023

I think it’s 85% of 25 years with a crime like this.

While I think her statement in court was truly remorseful, she should have left out all of her future plans and dreams.

JK has ruined the lives of 3 families with likely a split-second decision to drive while extremely intoxicated.
Where were her friends when she needed someone to take her keys away ? Why didn't the bar call her an Uber/Lyft ? The scary part is how many times did she drive this drunk on previous occasions.

Sam Miller is gone, Aric Hutchinson is in chronic pain & her own family is likely struggling with legal bills, future civil lawsuits, and figuring out how to see her in prison in South Carolina for the next 25 years. And JK herself is now saddled with multiple felony convictions, lifetime ban of her driver's license, no chance of a family of her own, and spending almost as much time in prison as she has been alive.

All for a couple more shots of tequila ... really ????

Even though up until that point in time she had not shown one wit of remorse, or empathy towards anyone but herself, she may have been somewhat moved after listening to the heart-rendering statements of the family members. That said, I think those tears flowed because the reality of what was about to go down had finally hit her like a sidecar. She was terrified. After the verdict was read, she looked dazed - perhaps having thought that her tears would somehow make a Hail Mary difference. They didn't. And this was where her Daddy met his Waterloo - he couldn't do a thing about it.

Miss Komoroski and her family are and will be reaping what they sowed.

I'm not defending her actions but just observing her comments. I do hate to see anybody that young and with a future blow it with dumb choices.

Just want to vent that 25 years is nothing. Not likely she'll do exactly 25. She recklessly ended the life of another and wrecked a family. She'll be out before she's 50? How is this justice? Grown adult driving under the influence!

Her dumb decisions cost a 34-year-old woman her life, and her new husband his long term health. I know you’re not defending her, but I find it much easier to see this woman behind bars knowing her actions caused long term effects for a number of families who did nothing wrong themselves. She was the only one in the wrong on that night, and it wasn’t the first time she had shown a lack of adherence to road rules. Her selfishness has caused the situation she now finds herself in.

She looked surprised at her sentence, I wonder what she was expecting. What was the minimum she could have gotten?
There’s a post on the previous page of this thread that says going to trial with the possibility of facing ‘3-85 years’ behind bars. The link from that post goes to a now-updated page with the result of her guilty plea and sentencing, so I’m not sure if it was accurate, but perhaps an indicator.

She pled with no deal as I understand it as a “blind plea”. I’m not sure on an appeal.
My understanding, as faulty as it may be, is that when someone enters a blind plea, they basically give up their right to appeal, except in the case of gross negligence on the part of counsel or the judge. I of course stand ready to be corrected.

So her lawyers told her to take the blind plea as opposed to a jury or bench trial - likely means no plea deal was offered by the prosecution. Not sure why she went this route because as you stated, she gives up the right to appeal. IMO, her lawyers told her she'd probably get no more than 15 years and they were about 10 years short.

At least the Millers and Hutchinsons didn't have to sit through a trial with crash and autopsy photos.

Maybe she truly wanted to take responsibility.

I was thinking she probably expected to get the minimum (3 years, I think?), and also probably thought that was already more than she deserved.

Wonder if her parents had been warned that her sentence would likely be 20 yrs or more. Or maybe no one expected that.

I think the way she started to bellow & wail when the door closed behind her, was a clear indication her 'sorrys' & words of contrition were self-serving; when she heard the 10 years, she looked positively buoyant; imo - at that point she thought anything further would be less; personally (imo) 25 is not enough to fix the disorder in her brain & soul - but it's a start; I hope if there's an appeal the 25 gets increased.
And, her father needs to learn - money will not help his daughter.
(imo) her jail calls will reveal much.

#Justice & prayers for the Millers and Hutchinsons.
